Vocal Coach Reacts to and Analyses Home Free Ring Of Fire Cover with Avi Kaplan
What a treat! Home Free are definitely becomming a favourite group! Such an impressive acapella group and this time we are hearing them with Avi Kaplan who used to be in Pentatonix. Talk about bass royalty!

This is a reaction and analysis so please bare that in mind. I will be stopping and talking about what's happening vocally. If you're not interested in that, feel free to click on another video :)

Little known fact is that Tim and Avi are friends. Tim gave Avi pointers on opening up his lower range. This collaboration was about the same time that Avi was leaving Pentatonix for a solo career in folk music (you should really check out his newer material). So you may notice that he has his more modern Pentatonix beanie on throughout the song and when Tim hits the low note at the end, Avi pulls off his beanie and puts on a cowboy hat. That marks the transition in his career that was going on at the time.

Jennifer, I love watching your reactions!! You have so much fun and are so knowledgeable without being annoying (unlike some reaction folks), and I loved how you were grooving along with Adam's amazing beat! 😁 You're doing great with their names, and in case anyone hasn't mentioned it, there has been one personnel change since they became well-known: the gentleman in the cowboy hat is Chris Rupp, Adam's brother, who left the group to pursue a solo career a few years ago. He was replaced by Adam Chance (goes by Chance, to avoid Adam confusion), who you saw in "Man of Constant Sorrow." Everything these guys do is phenomenal, and I recommend "How Great Thou Art" and "Helplessly Hoping" (sheer vocal perfection), "All About That Bass" and "The Butts Medley" (for their goofier side), "Folsom Prison Blues" (for more amazing Johnny Cash and Tim's center of the earth low notes), and probably my favorite Home Free song, "Do You Hear What I Hear?" Have fun!! 😊

Adam Rupp goes by “Adam” or occasionally “Rupp”, whereas Adam Chance goes by “Chance”. Home Free did this song as their final piece in The Sing Off when they won it. On the left side, the guy with the cowboy hat is Adam Rupp’s brother, Chris Rupp. The two are the original founders of Home Free! They often do this song as a finale or encore, as the crowd goes nuts over it! It literally makes your behind vibrate, & Tim has blown a few speakers/subwoofers out! The next song that you asked about is “Champagne Taste (On a Beer Budget)” written by Tim, & it’s sooo much fun!!! Avi does a guest appearance (on the mechanical bull!) in the video, as does Tim’s wife, Jenika Marion Foust. Rob shows off his whistling talents, which are also great!

I also learned a bit about singing, as a clueless non-singer, thanks to your numerous valuable inputs. Eagerly waiting to shine with that knowledge at my next 5-7, maybe three lives away from now. ;)

The one you didn't recognise is Chris Rupp. He and his brother are founding members of Home Free. Chris left to do pursue other opportunities. That was when they brought Adam Chance. To avoid confusion Adam Chance is called Chance. Some of my favourite songs from Home Free are as follows: Helplessly Hoping, Sea Shanty Medly, American Pie (feat. Don McLean), Country Fried Pop Medley, The Butts Remix, End of the Road, King of the Road, The Devil Went Down to Georgia (feat. Charlie Daniels and Taylor Davis), The Gambler, Never Gonna Give You Up, Love Train, and Beach Boys Medley.

Avi and Tim both have nice 5+ octave ranges. Avi is classically trained and had just received an invite to the L.A. Opera when Scott Hoying of PTX called him needing a bass. He was known as Bass Cannon Kaplan in college. While I like both Tim and Avi's voices, Avi has the deep, thick, rich resonance Tim does not have. I just like Avi's timbre better over Tim's. Avi is also a polyphonic/overtone singer which allows him that additional whistle notes on top of his regular 5 octave range.

Jennifer, the one with the cowboy hat is Adam Rupp(beatboxer) brother Chris Rupp who co founded the group. He left for a solo career & other things and now they have Adam (CHANCE). A lot of people just call him Chance to keep him separate from Adam Rupp. So you know for sure, the last note was all Tim. But he goes lower in the live one on the show Sing Off. He can also go lower in songs such as Your Man Crazy Life tour version where he rattles the speaker.
