Home driving simulator with steering wheel, clutch and gearstick (learn the width of your car)

How realistic is City Car Driving simulator when using a steering wheel, gear stick and pedals? I put it to the test to see how different it is to a real manual car and whether I believe this setup can help someone learn to drive a car.

My instructor took a very long time to start giving me lessons so I practiced on this game in VR and by driving on abandoned and dirt roads. Well I can say that it can help but it can also do harm. When I started my actual lessons, the instructor instantly let me into traffic since she saw I have a feel for the car and I can control it without stalling. So that probably saved me a few lessons than if I were to go there without any experience and had to learn starting, shifting, positioning etc... But I also got some bad habits from practicing without an experienced instructor by my side. Like letting up the clutch too quickly etc... she basically told me that I drive like an italian racer. But in the end I finished with minimal lessons so I guess it was worth it!

Also it's nice to practice in this game but it does get kinda boring after a while. I played 25 hours but a lot of times I was so bored of it I just started driving like a maniac instead of practicing. It kinda put me off from driving a bit since I thought real driving would also be boring like this but luckily it's not! But hey, 25 hours of driving lessons would cost you hundreds of pounds or bucks or whatever so I guess it's not that bad (just be careful not to pick up bad habits on the way)

The amount of car control you learn through sim racing is actually kinda crazy. The first time I had an oversteer moment in real life on a wet road wasn't all that scary because muscle memory just kicked in and did it's thing. Sim racing definetly brought me to a point were I feel safer on the road in real life and helped me to keep the car in one piece were I probably otherwise would have binned it

I'm similar. When I was about 5 or 6 I used to have an electric sit in car, it was massive, much bigger than the ones you get today, had space for 2 people in it. That taught me a lot about steering but also judging how much space I had to get past things and people. On top of that I rode my bike a lot which also gave me spacial awareness and speed perception and of course I played a lot of racing games and euro truck sim etc too. So, while driving a car for the first time wasn't easy, and I wasn't very good with the clutch to start with, I had very good control, a good sense of speed, was aware of my surroundings and could judge my space well too

I've been playing racing games and different simulators since I was 8 but in order to learn something, I started to play it when I was 15. Now, I'm 18 and I finished my driving school in 3 weeks. During the first lesson, the instructor saw that I am strangely good at driving so he asked me how do I know so much about driving, is it because one of my parents let me drive? I said gaming was my teacher for 10 years. So, now, when I finished the school, I'm waiting for the day I will be attending the driving exam which is going to be in 3 weeks. I hope that won't do any stupid mistakes. It is not about money or price of the exam, I really want to pass it because in Lithuania, you have to wait like 2 months for your exam and if you don't pass for the first time, you have to wait another 2 months. Anyway, it is really nice that a real-life instructor shows such innovative technologies, includes entertaining video games into his video and spreads the news that gaming might be helpful in different fields.

I've been using driving simulators like this for about 17 years, and yet only went for my licence last year. Turns out driving simulators really do help with many aspects of driving! My instructor had me driving on the motorway on my second lesson (motorway lessons are normal here), and I passed my test within a month. The one thing it doesn't do is teach feeling, which is arguably the most important part, but having understood most of the rest of it before I even got in the driving seat of a car, it made it a lot faster to learn. I defo recommend it!

As a game lover, when I got my driver license I never had driven a real car yet and I did it at 31 years old. Simulation games helped me a lot, despite the fact that I learned in a weird way because those games that helped me a lot were/are Euro Truck Simulator 2 (ETS2) and American Truck Simulator (ATS). Those are my favorite simulator games, I'm 100+ level in both games and I have played truck simulator games since the 18 Wheels of Steel, back in 2002. In the ETS2 the homeland and main garage that I choose is located in Dover - England. All of my Lorries in ETS 2 have the steering wheel at the right but I can drive it in both lands, depending on the country wherever I am. Now in ATS the steering wheel is on the left, driven in the right lane. Both games I used to have a setup like this one, not from Logitech, mine was cheaper but it was a good setup till the gas pedal breaks. Well those simulation games ETS2 and ATS gave me confidence and helped with my license test, by judging my position on the road, taking fast decisions in junctions, roundabouts, traffic lights, people around, checking at all the mirrors, learning to use the dashboard and the truck computer system, listening to the engine revs, parking, get in that big ships to across, for instance, from England to Netherlands, etc. Well in the end I got my driver license, first try, with some minus (note that, comparing here to there the rules to get the driver license are different, 4 minus (they call it plus points here) or dangerous drive fails). Richard Teacher, when you can, if you haven't yet, I suggest you try Euro Truck Simulator 2 or American Truck Simulator with setups like that, they are nice simulator games that can help people to get their license, despite them being trucks, lorries not cars. Thank you very much for this video teacher!

Honestly, I did learn the basics with the instructor to which I am grateful for his patience as I was a slow learner(in terms of learning speed) but most of my driving improved once I got my full licence and I started driving on my own. This game with the right setup can teach you the bare minimum before going for lessons (check career mode as it has interesting challenges for you) but most of your driving will improve once you drive on your own as you have to be your own instructor and look out for yourself and you are in full control of the car so more responsibility lies on your shoulders. I used this simulator with Oculus Quest 2 for learning driving. Since I learnt automatic transmission, the simulation does really good without worrying the clutch control is far different from real one. I think VR simulation can actually reduce someone really nervous in driving (as your previous video), at the beginning from hitting someone or car crash as they know it is fake, while can learn the viewpoint from inside a car as well as certain control. The best part to highlight is I can "stand up" to passthrough the top of the car to see where am I during parking. The down side is, I can't see the buttons on the wheel through the VR glasses. And the setup of City Car Driving as VR is very tricky. Anyway it does help a lot for practising in the early stage of learning.

We have something like this in Singapore used for learner drivers. Now all learners here have to go though 3 sessions with real life roads in Sg and they will purposely throw some accidents scenarios all you. Eg, when people jay walking, encountering reckless drivers or poor driving conditions like rain. It's more of an accident simulation which learners cannot experience real life for obvious reasons. It's got motion in the chair too, can even feel simulated engine rev/braking and of course during accident. Good stuff.

Simulators also helped me to get better at driving. It helped me to understand car width and lane discipline, how to use the wheel calmly, gears and clutch, etc. I've had 14 hours of driving school with a manual gearbox so far, and I drive fine with little help from the instructor here and there, but zero serious faults or dangerous situations from my side. Takes some time to get used to a real car and how it operates, but overall once my nerves calmed in real traffic, everything got smooth. Although simulators are not the only thing I use to get somewhat better at driving, I have also watched countless hours of driving videos, etc. Besides City Car Driving there are many other games that can simulate driving and roads pretty well. BeamNG drive - loads of cars and maps to try out with A.I traffic (mods available) Euro Truck 2/American Truck - great highway systems and small roads, pretty smart A.I traffic (mods available) Asseto Corsa - great selection of cars, good mechanics (mods available) And for fun Dirt Really 2.0 and WRC - great physics with powerful cars

Still learning to drive, I also use City Car Driving and Logitech wheel and gearstick to gain more handling experience, there seem to have no setting good for UK, so in profile setup, I use Left hand lane and Australia region, only problem is KM/h display. For the mirrors and blind spot check, using a VR goggle will definitely help and be more realistic. Finally, watched all your KZread videos many times which even help more, thanks!!

This simulator is excellent, I have used it myself with a similar 3-pedals driving wheel and transmission gear setup, all for less than 150 euros. It's worth mentioning it also includes a TON of lessons, which are scenarios with a specific set of goals (eg, stop and start on a hill, drive as a taxi cab at night under rain, etc), which are super helpful to train to do various manoeuvers and to learn how to deal with some common scenarios, all while automatically and dynamically detecting driving errors (no other driving game or simulator can do that, other driving simulator as proposed by some schools can only detect specific errors under specific linear scenarios, there is no free-form play nor detection of driving conditions as in this one). Also, it can simulate dangerous situations, which is INCREDIBLY useful to train observation and practice anticipations, such as how to react to a car suddenly braking in front of you, or a pedestrian running through the road, or trafic lights being broken with a police officer in the middle (or not), etc. By doing the lessons and increasing the likelihood of dangerous situations, this is by far the best training I had in observation and anticipation, something I could not get from driving school. Also the simulation can allow you to drive on the left side as in UK, simply select Australia when creating a new profile. The simulator is not a replacement for a driving school and an instructor, because the simulator does NOT guide you, it does not teach you how to do things, it only offers a virtual environment to practice, but this is super helpful as a complement to driving school, so much so that I kept it after getting my driving license and it allowed me to practice successfully to drive on both left side and right side of the road, which I then could do in real life without a hitch :-)

I used this game to learn to drive, and I actually had both a steering wheel (a Thrustmaster T300 RS) and a VR headset (a Quest 2). Initially I struggled with the game, but eventually I could do the city test and the figures test reliably. The game definitely taught me how to judge car dimensions, which was useful whenever I had to squeeze in tight spaces in a real test. I kinda expected Richard to do the advanced city test and the advanced figures test, but without a VR headset those might be quite a hurdle.

Ive spent many hours in euro truck simulator, ive become so good at taking hard turns and parking double trailers that i can do it in my sleep. i decided to try this for the first time in real life with a regular trailer on a car. It was completely different in real life haha. Took me a few tries and i did get the trailer where i wanted it but it was not straight and the car was leaning quite a bit on a smaller hill but ey.. i got it. Ive also played car sim prior to taking driving license and i think it does help a little bit, Not alot-but you get an idea of how much you gota turn and how to control the car. Obviously u cant put 1000 hours in this simulator then drive a real car if you never done it before but youll be familiar with it.

I think the simulation is good since when actually driving a car on traffic there are so many things to think of at once. So at least this way you have a bit of muscle memory for certain aspects before you even start. The other thing that really helps is just watching and listening to the first person camera driving lessons. You start to be able to quickly recognize road signs and various situations and how you would react if you were the one driving.
