In the Italian Missal, the words of the consecration of the wine are “shed for you and for all….” (per tutti…) In the English Missal, the words are, instead, “shed for you and for many…”. The words used by Jesus, as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew, are “shed for you and for many…” This is the correct wording for the consecration of the wine and the Latin version of the Mass, which is the official version still for the whole Church, does continue to use the Scriptural wording “per multi”. This makes it difficult for the translator. Is he to translate the Italian, that is to say, “shed for you and for all….” Or is he, instead, to use the official translation of the Latin text “shed for you and for many…”. The reason why this is important is that we know that not all will be saved - as Jesus explained, there is a straight and narrow way which leads to salvation and there are few only who find it, while there is a broad and easy way which leads to Hell and there are many who find it. So, it is not in accordance with the teaching of the Church to use “shed for you and for all….” . Nevertheless, the Italian Missal does say “shed for you and for all….” So, should the translator have translated the Italian (and possibly given scandal to English speaking Catholics) or should he have given the correct version, translated from the Latin Missal? In the end, he chose to translate the words which would have been used if the Mass had been said in Latin, ignoring the words actually used, in Italian.
