Thank you! I believe I enjoyed the tone of the Strad copy a little bit more than the Amati copy. Areas of note were the low end chords and the butterfly run. I am a. Re tread student. I gave up violin in 6th grade because everyone else could read music and I could not. I also had complete confusion about how to proceed to tune my great grandfathers Cremona copy. I sincerely wanted to Excell on the violin; I loved its color and antique appearance and sincerely wanted to please my grandfather and mother but could not. My mother had sensitive ears and had piano lessons as a child but could.not get with me the magic of reading music. I had a tin ear. Finally my first violin teacher told my mother that I had not the fast twitch muscles to amount to anything on the violin. In short my instructor was dissing me. And how I wanted to master my great grandfathers violin. But I really felt cursed! Al the classmates were teachers pets and I was slow and awkward on the instrument I cared most about. The violin had skunked me! Then after a short time with the alto saxophone I decided to take the plates apart on the Cremona and see what I could learn and possibly re glue the bouts where the offending glue cracks had been pointed out by my second violin teacher in 6th grade, having thusly humiliated me from ever achieving anything on the family violin. The other day I was listening to an English gentleman about the procedure of tuning a violin with an electronic tuner, and for the first time in several years my fungal infection was subsiding and I heard these simple words. Slack off on All strings but the one you are tuning. So I tryed it and started with the A string then went to D then to G then to E. It would seem that every string affects the other and all are dependant on each other. I rubbed some soapstone on the nicks of the bridge and astonishingly the violin sounded sweet and harmonious an I was able to play the turkey Trott. All this after about 45 years of entire frustration with the fickle violin. Then yesterday while I was pulling the violin out of its case I noticed the A string had become unraveled at the octave. So I put on a silver wound gut A string as a replacement. It worked somewhat but was not completly compatible with the other strings. So I played peas porridge hot peas porridge cold peas porridge in the pot nine days old. It sounded pretty decent but that was all I could play and make sence of. So I figure the string set must match each other in order to sound good.

So in conclusion I much preferred the Stradivari copy to the Amati. The Strad. Had better low end and a more sweet butterfly run. I guess I am in the minority as.almost everyone else seems to have.preferred the Amati. There was one other person who liked the Strad. So I guess there were only two of us for the Strad. But I call em like I hear em and the Strad did seem better to my tin ears. This was very interesting test I'm glad you posted it. I have two full sized violins right now and am greatful for them. I have thought of trying to find a Guarnieri Del Geso copy or even jumping to a small viola as I love the rich deep tone of the viola. My first teacher was a violist and was able to teach violin also. I am eternally greatful for his instruction even though I was a mediocher student I am only now beginning to e b joy the violin and that is because I can with the help of an electronic tuner tune my violin. Thank you Fiddlershop for your sincere helpfulness.😅

Thanks for watching and for your insight. That's the wonderful thing about there being options! We can find what we like or what meets our needs best. I agree with you on the Strad having a better low end, it was a bit more clearer and direct.

The strad copy seemed to have a bit more bass overtone and dynamic range, ie difference in volume and tonal variations. The Amati sounded more even or "cleaner" in a way, I understand why people here likes them but the Strad seemed more of a player instrument. Is the Amati copy easier to play in comparison?

Both instruments sound wonderful but I would prefer the amati especially for romantic and 20th century...that strad in particular is too bright for me

IMHO, Amati is wonderful in higher tones, while Strad. excels in every tone.

thank you so much for playing these instruments my choice would without doubt be the Amati not the Stradivarius model for tone in all positions reason being I own a Grand Nicola Amati very fine copy so know the sound well made by a highly skilled maker and consider the Stradivarius to lack power in the top note 13 position becomes a faint shrill note not a full note also has wolf notes on double stops especially 3/4 strings real problem Grand Amati has none and clear two bright strings two dark

I like the Amati more. It has a fuller quality. My opinion only. I feel that Strads are too sharp and too bright. I pefer mello and darker tones.

@@ethangill2477 You may have not knowingly if you do attend concerts once a while... Not too often are the violin especially announced per concert. None the less you made a very valid point... For personal use or smaller audiences: there is many violins that can compete to a Strad; but of the many amazing aspects of it is how much projection actually fits into such a small box. And as much as a copy as these two instruments were... They did actually reenact a similar comparative relationship in many replicas I have listened to online and in person. So I guess in some way of how they replicate their qualities by shape and/or technique... there is possibly some continuity in question... And Holstein seems to have held their end up.. As for the "originals" I have heard played live of either a Strad, Amati, Gaurneri or etc... I personally was too blown away by the performance of the musician overshadowing any advantages I may have picked up on with their instruments used. I was mostly left with that feeling they could play strings on a trash bin lid and still manage to bring out something beautiful... It all comes down to the artistic interpretation of the music with what they have in their hands. And for some: one of these old Italian violins have more in them that they can relate than any other violin has to date... Maybe placebo maybe not.
