Holstein Amati Violin Review

Holstein Amati Violin Review
Playing 'La Folia' by Arcangelo Corelli
It is made of beautiful Maple and Spruce aged a minimum of 15 years. We fit them with high quality Ebony fittings and with Vision strings by Thomastic, which are one of my absolute favorite sets. We use the highest quality 3-tree Despiau bridge and spend up to an hour just carving the bridge to maximize the sound quality.
This is a workshop instrument which means that it wasn’t built on a large assembly line. The Holstein Amati is built by a few select Luthiers in one of our favorite workshops. This increases the build quality drastically and you can really tell that it's a professional violin when playing it.

I've been purchasing from fiddleshop online, they are very friendly and fair, once I purchased a mute and didn't arrive due to the bad delivery system in my country happens quite often, but fiddler shop just send it to me again, so I'm very grateful for that generous act

What do you recommend for an intermediate student who prefers an instrument with warmth, but not at the cost of projection....around the $1200 mark. I've been watching reviews but cannot decide.

Fiddlerman, Is there any clues on how to identify an Amati violin over a Stradivari model? They are pretty similar.

  • @1stfiddlerman

    @1stfiddlerman

    2 жыл бұрын

Strads Golden Age was a bit different from his first violins. The bodies were wider. Of course Amati's "Grand Amati" was used by Cremonese Violins makers from that point forward. He is the greatest contributor to the modern violin design. Body proportions, f-holes, and arching are different as are they from the individual makers as well. I'm definitely not an expert though I see the patterns frequently. But you are right, they are very similar. Especially Golden Era Strads vs the Grand Amati design.

Oh, you can, just don't play the difficult Corelli version. La Folia is an old Spanish folk tune, you can slowly grow with ciaconas like this and one day you will be able to play Corelli's, Marais' and Vivalidi's versions.

Vibrato is a no for beginners! You have to start with basic skills, before training on vibrato. A proper vibrato is very difficult on string instruments and usually takes a long time to learn. Anyway, if you go original baroque, constant vibrato is a no-no anyway. People with a long neck might have difficulties without chin rest, but you can always use some piece of fabric, like they often do in ancient music.

Wait a minute, you have the guts to stand there and play THIS for nothing? If you put this on a CD, I will buy it on the spot, even if the CD costs 50 €! La Folia is my official personal anthem, but what you're doing here is not to get on CDs anywhere. I prefer to listen to sonatas for just 1 violin plus b. c., but lately I was looking for just violin without anything (couldn't find anything at Dussmann, Berlin). I think, you're partly improvising and that's even better. With this recording you move up into the ranks of my top models and idols, bloody oath! And this version of La Folia is going to influence my style quite a bit.....

I hear a little 'breathy' rustling from the strings and it's very useful to learn, that this must be a normal thing, even with high quality violins. At times I was asking myself, whether this could be just a handicap of student violins. So, it helps me to hear it here and learn, that my violin is not all that bad. Well, a little breathy noise can be an emotional thing, like we know from human voices.

Breathy in the quiet passages, yes--it sounds very touching. It obviously has to be and I like it. From now on I will enjoy it while it comes from my violin. You tried to sound a little baroque? I know you are an experience player of baroque repertoire-among other styles. Partly you played without vibrato, partly with a very strong vibrato and I love that variation. I'm supposed to get over my violin-vibratophobia, I suffered from since I was a child. If everything is with vibrato, I find it too much, but vibrato is not necessarily a bad thing. I have to understand that emotionally. When I was 13, I actually refused to learn violin, because I found the vibrato so nasty. I loved Handel's string sections and disliked the violin solos. It took a long time until I discovered Harmonia Mundi CDs, which totally changed my view on the violin.

Fiddlerman "I do however prefer to play this with a harpsichord and in a cathedral like acoustical environment." Just violin an harpsichord, I'm looking for CDs like that too! People are buying the same all the time: If it comes to Corelli, concerti grossi; if it comes to Vivaldi, Four Seasons; Handel, Water Music etc. I am digging through ancient music shelves at Dussmann's for hours before I find a real gem. I know, the violin music I have to learn is NOT coming from inside myself. It's coming from outside, for we are all playing what we've learned by listening. I have to tank a lot of soloist violin music and would most certainly sit and listen to you in a cathedral for hours.

Well, it depends. A great soloist can make instruments that are not the best sound fantastic. If the soloist has unlimited funds they would look at old Italian fine instruments costing millions. That way they have both a great instrument and an investment. If the soloist is looking for a great instrument that is not an investment they should look at award winning instruments such as VSA gold prize winners. We have a few of those at Fiddlershop. We have a bench made Scott Cao that is out of this world IMAO!!! We also have a couple of Bogdanoski violins.

What bow are you using? I am in desperate need of a new bow but don't know what to get, I need something to go with my $3,000 violin, right now I am using a fiberglass $20 bow and it's terrible! It is hindering my music ability.

I guess I should have mentioned it. I am using a 3 star Holstein Pernambuco bow. Thanks for watching.
