Major Michelle A. Rakers! The lady can conduct! It's almost sacrilege to clap after a performance like that. It takes an incredible set of ears, a keen mind, a deep understanding of the music, and uncanny vision to wrest a performance like that out of even the best musicians. As a retired classical musician I can tell you that performances like this are the very thing that is missing in the modern classical world. Musicians, and conductors especially, haven't a clue as to what is meant by the phrase "living inside the music". What you just heard was an example of "living inside the music". Needless to say, the band is pretty incredible too.

Why is a conductor needed at all? The music is on paper. The musicians know how to play and read music. This is a serious question. I've never understood the need.

@@suntzuwuwhen there is more people than a chamber group you need someone to keep it all together. Queues, tempo changes, breaks, fermata, keeping people together. The reason why you might not need one in a marching setting is because your keeping time with your feet. The conductor also instructs specific parts and how it should be played.

Camera needs to focus on soloist at appropriate time. The baritone/ euphonium solo is a tough one and classic. Need to see the soloist- not the conductor and full ensemble. We don’t get enough respect as baritone/ euphonium/tenor tuba players! Other than that- outstanding!

The Euphonium is playing the solo. It's just the camera angle that makes it hard to see it. If you watch a few seconds after and look at the Euphoniums, there is a second player. I've learned the solo before, not the easiest but one of my personal favorites to play. Additionally if you look really closely when the solo starts, there is a Euphoniumist with his instrument up.

I just figured that it's the U.S. Marines, so the mindset is a disruptive such thing - meaning, they're going to get the job done even at the expense of clarity (there is SLOP dripping from this recording: rhythmic integrity is lacking and there is an internal war among the band's sections, and even within the sections). The intonation excellent throughout, and that makes this an enjoyable listen. They're Marine's, right? So, no one expects them to dance or coax anyone else into such a state...I'll bet that the Army band, or even the Air Force band put this recording to shame in those regards.

@@coloraturaElise Is that why the rhythmic problems? Folks have to breathe? I just typed this, but since I'm curious and you may know: the intent is there, and the intonation of the group is wonderful, but the unity of rhythm is downright offense because there is so little of it. It's like 6 tanks plowing through a few buildings that the Martian refugees constructed out of plastic garbage that the company that first came through their designated residence left behind. Gross... like they're drunk.

Do not disrespect the Marine bands conductor. This was her own interpretation, and I do not see you up there conducting.

While that may be true, the amount of energy it takes to play this piece is no joke. The longer you have to hold notes in this piece, the more your lungs will hate you.

You are correct. They're not with her at all; they are following her. The important thing though is that they stayed together. It's just the way the marine band "reads" the ictus of conducting.
