Thank you all SO much for watching this video. Absolutely wild that in the last 2 years it’s racked up over 100k views. If you somehow want MORE microcosm content I just released a new video showcasing how I use microcosm across multiple instruments in a full band / heavier context HERE: kzread.info/dash/bejne/oqGi27pthtrOZ5c.html

Congratulations! Maybe because you took the time to explain what the features might mean musically. Connecting the tool with its use cases. Super glad you started without the granular, to show more clearly how flexible this pedal is. All that ‘it’s a gimmick’ hate is simply incorrect, i agree.

I got a microcosm about six months ago, and I think this is the fourth time I’ve watched this since then. An astonishing piece of kit which has been so inspiring and (just as importantly) puts a big dumb smile on my face every time I use it. Every time I watch this, I get more ideas… and I still feel like I’m just scratching the surface!

Due to most having the attention span of a rat, and complaining over videos that go beyond 5-minutes. Such a shame, more and more content creators having to apologize for their videos being longer than 10-minutes. People, phones and their desire for minimal "headline" information is sad to see. I find myself literally walking away from people I meet who are unable to discuss anything, with depth, that goes beyond the shallow cringe of their own skin. As a professor, it's highly disturbing to see more and more students, entering the university level, with such lack of critical thinking or the inability to say really much at all. Don't get me started on how dismal their writing skills have become. This is all, of course, me speaking in generalities, though grotesquely true.

Yes! But the tech isn’t so weird if you look at the history of electronic tools since about 1998. They’ve taken tools ordinarily only used by super-nerds making experimental music in DAW, and made it easily available to musicians who are more interested in expressing music than setting up complex technological structures. It’s a wonderful addition to the world of guitar. Even though many regular rock people hate on it, it’s a wonderful tool for people into “sonic” guitar. Especially when paired with other things.

Thank you so much Mark for such a personal and in-depth video. Its probably the most engaging and detailed video of a piece of equipment I have ever seen. I was looking at that pedal before, and now i am even more drawn to try it out! But one stupid question: i want one experimental pedal like the Microcosm... but there is also Chase Bliss Mood that can be used for some really cool stuff. I know they are different in many many ways... but if you had to choose one - which one would it be? (please say microcosm hahahaha)

The reverb alone blew me away Holy cow Just that stereo reverb and I was ALREADY sold on the pedal because I could honestly put it in place of my current reverb and have a way way better reverb BUT THEN ALSO HAVE MORE PARAMETERS TOO??? ALSO your clean tone is literally perfect. Which guitar/amp do you use? I run a Kemper but I'd gladly find a profile for whatever amp you use. And I'd love to know the pickups you use for when I custom build my next guitar

Hahahaha, glide mode, I know. Took me some tweaking, but definitely some glide shapes are better than others. I prefer to verb it out within the unit as much as possible though it takes a little filter too, then it can be this diffuse ambient tone where the broad shifting it does is really welcome to create interest and differentiate it from other pads.

Thanks for such an in depth look! Your setup is incredibly thoughtful. Did you alter your microcosm’s lights?-mine are taped over and still too bright. Any tips there?

Deco is completely worth it just for the saturation side. But a totally, completely different type of pedal than this.

Neat demo. But I've seen a few solo guitar demos of Microcosm & wonder if the complexity created wouldn't be lost in band mix. Also wondering if very similar sounds couldn't be achieved with the Eventide H9.

I don't think the H9 could do the complex melodic things, if it can, cool, I have one of those too. That said, the Empress Effects Zoia might be able to do similar things. I've heard, from prolific patch creators on the Zoia Discord, that it can't do exactly the same thing, but I'd be REALLY surprised if it couldn't do similar things in its own way.

Hi, just a simple question, why do you go from the Walrus to Pinstripe? Cant the Walrus go direct to the interface? I Just got the "Milkman the amp stereo", do i also need a box like the Pinstripe? What is the benefit of that pedal in this setting? Love your videos!

I've been watching videos on this thing. It's a gnarly beast of sounds. I'm not sold yet. Seems so "new sound" , I'm leaning towards the more old skool synth sounds like the Nightsky does, I'd love discussion and mild argument about this - but it is a thing. One synthesizes the delay and the other the almighty reverb, yet another difference.

Well millions of people use this, and about 900 people use the NIghtsky. So you would already stand out... beyond that noone has understood how to use the sequencer in the nigtsky... so theres that too, you could master that. I own the nightsky and it is awesome... watch Kevin Eknes review of it and you will buy it immediately.

I like the sound of my wet effects into a clean amp. I find that amp EQ, cabinets, etc help create a sense of cohesion.

Hi Mark! I thoroughly enjoyed this one. What’s your opinion on signal chain for the microcosm? It serves as the main looper for my board, so instinctly I placed the microcosm at the end of all my wet fx to loop my other wet fx too when I want to just use the microcosm as a looper and nothing more. But I’ve seen many people put the microcosm before the wet fx! Thanks!

  • @markjohnstonofficial

    @markjohnstonofficial

I keep it as early in my chain as absolutely possible because I like using the engines as a more important piece than the looper. The earlier you keep it the more cleanly and predictably you’ll be able to trigger samples and what not.

I’ve been thinking a lot on where to place this pedal in my FX loop. What is the reasoning of putting it at the front of your FX chain VS the back? I’ve been switching back and forth and can’t nail it down
