Edith Eger was just a teenager in 1944 when she experienced one of the worst evils the human race has ever known. As a Jew living in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe, she and her family were sent to Auschwitz, the heinous death camp. Her parents were sent to the gas chambers, but Edith’s bravery kept her and her sister alive. Toward the end of the war, Edith and other prisoners had been moved to Austria. On May 4, 1945, a young American soldier noticed her hand moving slightly amongst a number of dead bodies. He quickly summoned medical help and brought her back from the brink of death.
After the war, Edith moved to Czechoslovakia where she met the man she would marry. In 1949 they moved to the United States. In 1969 she received her degree in Psychology from the University of Texas, El Paso. She then pursued her doctoral internship at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center at Fort Bliss, Texas.
Today, Dr. Eger is a prolific author and a member of several professional associations. She has a clinical practice in La Jolla, California, and she holds a faculty appointment at the University of California, San Diego. She has appeared on numerous television programs including CNN and the Oprah Winfrey Show, and she was the primary subject of a holocaust documentary that appeared on Dutch National Television. She is frequently invited to speaking engagements throughout the United States and abroad.
Now 92-years-old, Dr. Edie is a respected clinical psychologist in San Diego, and the author of the books, The Choice and now The Gift: 12 Lessons to Save Your Life. Her latest work weaves profound clinical and philosophical insights with gripping stories of survival and healing.
There are not very many Holocaust survivors remaining, and while this conversation was incredibly difficult at times, it is so incredibly powerful. Edie is a true inspiration, and we could all use her advice on coming to terms with trauma, freeing your mind from the shackles of your past, and choosing to live a loving, positive life.
Join me on Episode 1,010 to learn about healing, forgiveness, and finding freedom with Holocaust survivor Dr. Edith Eger!

Dear Edith Egar & Lewis Howes 🙏🕊 Thanks for sharing this amazing interview. I’ve been through horrible sexual and physical abuse and I kept it a secret for 20+ years. I couldn’t agree more when Edith said (I’m paraphrasing) “the guards are more prisoners than I’m because I’ve my mind, and they can never take it away” and that’s exactly how I feel, when I every now and then are thinking about my abusers. In a weird way (or maybe weird for someone who hasn’t experience severe violence) I managed to separate my physical body from my mind when the abuse and rapes was going on. Yes I’ve spent many years with different trauma psychologist and it wasn’t before I tried to end my suffering and was given help “in another level” over a 6 months period that I finally felt free. And that feeling have been persistent in my life ever since. Listening to Edith makes me realize how incredible the human mind is constructed and how much we’re willing to do, not only to survive but also to live. Thank you Edith & Lewis for this amazing and inspirational interview 🙏❤️🕊 Stay safe and healthy and take care of yourself and your loved ones. With love, kindness and respect, Grace

I really appreciated with all my heart. No body can murder my soul, I've tortured from family members, physically and emotionally. Also ex couple. I am not giving my power to those feelings, to my hard past. Even with my struggles, hardships, and feelings with melancholy,I'm still standing up for myself. Cause I understand no body can't do it for you!

Dr. Edith Eva Eger has also written “The Gift.” Having this beautiful lady sharing the gift that she received from this horrible life experience, is priceless for all of us. It is essential for all of us to learn from this so that this never happens again. We are all called to do our part in stopping this unbelievable cruelty.

Very enlightening interview! I, myself, was victimized by a narcissist. But now I feel pity for him after knowing what made him as such. He is more a victim that I am. Dr. Eger's wisdom gave me more reason to be of use to others and contribute what I can to alleviate their concerns. God bless you, Dr Eger and Lewis.

Yes, I agree. I was abused but the abusers are much more victims because they are so victimized they believe that the only way to feel better is to abuse others. I learned that victims feel they only have two options, to be a victim or an abuser. They don't see that they have another option, to be a survivor.

She is precious. She stole my bumper sticker “we don’t heal till we feel” so true. And the revelation I know is depression is due to unresolved grief. as a therapist and specialist in treatment of sexual abuse., I have a big bean bag and big red bat in my office for people to release there anger rage. All emotion is energy and that energy needs to be Released in a corresponding way. There are many levels dimensions to healing trauma. We must heal from the core of our being from the inside out. It takes a combination of spirituality and psychological understanding of the soul to heal. ❤
