Holocaust Scholar Warns of Genocide Threat In Gaza

Israeli-born Omer Bartov is one of the world's most esteemed experts on genocide: the Samuel Pisar Professor of Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Brown University, he's written several acclaimed books on the Shoah and Nazism.
Here he warns ethnic cleansing is under way in Gaza - and warns: "ethnic cleansing often deteriorates into genocide because people don't want to move, and so in order to encourage them to move, you kill them."

What is so frustrating about Dr. Bartov's framing is that it's dripping with liberal ruling class respectability politics. Armed resistance is popular among palestinians because all other avenues of resisting have been systematically shut down by Israel. Liberation never came without at least the threat of violence. What he's asking of the Palestinians is exceptional.

Israeli settlers always crocodile tears while stealing someone’s home. This is what they say, “If I don’t steal your home, someone else will steal it,” was the answer given by an Israeli settler to Muna al-Kurd, a young Palestinian woman who accused him of stealing her home in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in the occupied East Jerusalem. The settler replies in a thick US accent: “Yes, but if I go, you don’t go back, so what’s the problem? Why are you yelling at me?” The response provoked al-Kurd, who told him “You are stealing my house!” “If I don’t steal it, someone else will steal it,” Jacob answers. “So why are you yelling at me?” “No one is allowed to steal my home!” al-Kurd shouts.

I think, by getting to know what happened to the Israeli hostages, who were executed because they thought to be, not Hamas, but Palestinians, because they were unarmed an waving their hands as a sing of delivering themselves to the IDF, that Israel truly and Inequivaquily has genocidal intentions.

The context is very simple. The Palestinian people have been made to pay a terrible price for European antisemitism. Now to complete the Israel project, with full support from the US and Europe, we are witnessing the events in Gaza, and soon the West Bank will follow.

Well in all fairness to Hamas, don't forget that the primary objective of October 7th was to kidnap hostages, which they actually treated well under the circumstances, as opposed to the horrific treatment of the Palestinian children who have been held in Israeli military prisons. And also, the vast majority of the deaths that occurred on that day were caused by the IDF themselves. This has been known for more than a month.

Omar seems to think that Israeli’s have a “right of return” like the Palestinians have (from the 47 Nakba etc). Israeli citizens/settlers have not returned to their land. The land was palestine and has been stolen by Israel, before that stolen by UK/Balfour who then handed palestine to Israel. Palestinians have the right to return to their historic homeland, not Israeli’s who have colonised the land through violence, kicking out the Palestinians as they go.

The concept of resistance is strange to the Western World. They have historically labelled every resistance movement as terrorists; from Mau Mau in Kenya to uMkhonto We Sizwe and Nelson Mandela in South Africa. History will probably celebrate HAMAS as a liberation movement, just as has been the case with two I have mentioned above!!

If you ask any mother or father what they would do if their child was illegally kidnapped and tortured, what do you think their answer would be? Ask any Israeli this question - what would their answer be? worse than October 7th, I assure you.

Might you ever be tempted to break out as Hamas did? Actually, I know what would happen if you ever asked such a question: you'd demonized without mercy and denied any means of livelihood - and that's not a fate I wish on you.

The history of the world is the Israel and Hamas conflict. The history of the world is colonization. United states, Canada, Australia, South America, Africa were all colonized. All these countries were the Genocide and erasure of the history of the native peoples of the lands in order to create their country. What Israel is doing in Palestine and what the US does in the middle east is modern colonization. We as Humans living through this modern colonization can see the genocidal means by which our countries came to be. We have to teach and recognize this truth and accept the truth of these lands true history. History does not begin when the colonizers renamed/conquered the land. Humanity needs the truth so that we can be more compassionate and humble in the way we see each other. National pride in all these countries should be scrapped. When humans celebrate the creation of these colonized nations, you celebrate a genocide. Humanity is suffering from lack of truth, hence the anger, hatred, confusion between people. Recognizing, learning and speaking the truth will set humanity on path to peace, harmony, understanding, compassion, and forgiveness. Governments in these lands are in place to hide the truth.

Yes colonization. In the Netherlands we had a 100 year war with the king of Spain. Spain occupied and ruled us. We didn't like that and resisted . First on a small scale later setting up an army. And we also did very nasty things like torture Spanish and priests. We might have been geurillas or terrorists sometimes. Now we are a decent state most of the time with the usual flaws. Palestine's are in it for 75 years so they still have 25 to go.

The take away message for me is empathy and trying to look objectively through the lens of opposing views. Passion has polarised my opinion with the horror of Gaza, and I had a almost subconscious appreciation that this was happening. Omar’s sensitivity, honesty and fairness pulls me up on this, and surely points in a direction from which conditions for peace, security, and opportunity for all can germinate.
