    Nearly a perfect summation of my feelings towards the novel. It's been hard for me to articulate my thoughts on the novel to those close to me, but the wording you've used has been spot on!

    I'm going to reread it some day. I spent 30 seconds of this short complaining about the politics of the book, but that was definitely a hot take. In the months since i read it, when i think about the book, it's all good things

    I love "Holly" lots of black humour and I felt it picked up on both sides of the covid thing. Of course Holly was super cautious, it's Holly. Very satisfying ending. This put Stephen King back in my good books as I personally did not like Billy Summers at all.

    Personally, while I don’t agree with Stephen King’s politics, I like the book a lot. I view it more as Holly’s p.o.v and that she’s so careful about lots of things related to Covid because of her mother’s death.

    Unrelated question, is that just a slideshow in the background or was it some ambience you had going while you read your books cause that sounds like something i might try 🤔🤔

    Maybe it's called a book pillow? I've had it forever. It's a sturdy foam triangular pillow cut to two different angles with ledges where the book can rest. it really saves on wrist strain! they don't work at all if you're laying down, but they're awesome if you're sitting up to read.

    I can’t stand him. I read around 20 of his novels. Watched all adaptations. Was a massive fan in my youth. But since social media came round, I just find him unbearable. He’s just out to push his views on everyone.

    Great video I actually thought the same thing the first time I read through this book there are a lot of political things that I’ve heard King go off of. I don’t think I’ve ever read his book on gun control because I think that’s one point where I wouldn’t agree with Keyon, but that’s probably a subject for another video but on this video, I thought that there was some important things about Holly with her anxiety And being in the public having to work with a lot of people and then also being somebody who had anxiety myself the whole thing I actually surprised you didn’t touch the mask wearing thing from Woman on how a mask makes you feel like you can’t breathe. I’m surprised you didn’t touch on that but that’s probably because he likes masks and But I did see like how certain characters need to have their political opinion kind of worn on their sleeves just to explain what kind of character they are so the second time I went through this book I could almost kind of see the reasoning for the prominence in the political stuff in this bookbut maybe it should’ve been towed down by about half

    I agree with your point that King probably thinks that his characters need to wear their political opinions on their sleeve so we know what kind of character they are. And to be fair, some real people wear their loud opinions on their sleeves and make sure everyone knows who they want us to think they are. I guess that's not exactly what bothered me. It's that Holly's political opinions obviously mirror King's own opinions, so he's soapboxing through his fiction without giving any characteristic nuances to it. It would have been nice to for Holly to encounter just one anti-masker who was a decent human being. You know? King was dealing in absolutes in this book, and only a Sith deals in absolutes!! haha! thanks for the comment!

Of all the decent people in Kings books would any Of them be trump supporters Like maybe one of the guys in Dream catcher. Or Stew Redmond? I can’t imagine that guy supporting Hillary But he probably was a democrat Would be a fun discussion to go through every king character and guess there political affiliation

    Sure! And to be clear, I'm not opposed to anyone having opinions or making a point, whether that's in interviews, on Twitter, or in their books. But the way King went about it in this book grated on me personally. His political tangents weren't incorporated well into story or the themes of the novel. To ME, they only detracted from what the book what trying to accomplish. And like I said in the video, I don't even object to most of the points he's making about politics or COVID, I just felt they were out of place in this book. But in the end, I still liked the book, so... ... I'm actually working on a full length video right now where I discuss the early reviews of HOLLY. I'm interested in seeing what others have to say!

    Holly was trash. Not a criticism of your review but an honest question; how could you find yourself invested in the mystery when the identities of the killers is spoiled for the reader in the very beginning? I’m sorry but 400+ pages of knowing the identity of the killers and watching others riddle it out didn’t do it for me.

  • @gronskeibooks

    @gronskeibooks

    To me that's not a spoiler. I've seen plenty of movies and books where we alternate vantage points between the killer and others. the book wasn't so much a mystery in that way as a thriller.

    It's a gymnast reference for successfully completing the final maneuver of a competition event. We use the phrase "stuck the landing" for books whose endings satisfy the set ups throughout the novel.
