The modern Mitsubishi "spiral" escalators introduced in the mid 1980s are really just curved escalators, with each section turning through, at most, 180° and being complete as an operational unit. Where several floors need to be linked several pairs (one up, one down) of curved units are installed which, when viewed from a distance look like an intricate double helix. That's no mean engineering feat in itself but doesn't really compare with Reno's design. When the Mitsubishi's treads disappear into the floor at the bottom of the travel, they are returned to the top via the underside of the unit, just as they are in a straight escalator. At Holloway Road the treads returning to the top formed the upward bound escalator, coaxial with the downward escalator. In other words, both the up and the down escalators were a single unit in the form of a double helix, with one continuous set of treads. They disappeared below the floor at the top and bottom landings, continued under the floor for a further half turn in the same plane and re-emerged to carry passengers in the opposite direction. Now that is impressive. It's a pity it wasn't a success. William Henry Aston's contribution was the flexible chain links at 3:37.

@@cheesedoff-with4410 There was a plan to restore some of the parts they found and create a museum exhibit. There must be patent information too. A couple of scary things I found out about it is that the mechanism was driven by a vertical drive shaft running the full height of the lift shaft in which it was installed, with gears driving horizontal spindles, which drove the chain connecting the treads. It seems the treads were not in the form of steps but formed a sloping moving surface, so imagine someone near the top losing their footing! I'm not sure what provision was made for a handrail. It would at best be a fixed one. The synchronous moving handrail came later.

Arsenal, Holloway Road and Caledonian Road stations were amongst the last to have tungsten bulb lighting on the platform. It was much easier on the Motorman's eyes when emerging from the tunnel. But, the health and safety bods didn't think about that when they insisted on the garish fluorescent strip lights. From the (what seems to be) only surviving photograph of the Reno spiral, it might have been unfinished, but looks absolutely terrifying, with the tiny treads, no handrail, and people brushing past going in the opposite direction. Couple that with the length of Edwardian ladies skirts, and its not hard to imagine the whole thing becoming a vertical mincing machine almost from the off.

Wow, I find the idea of a spiral escalator as awesome, would so love to see one. When I was stationed in Germany I found a non-stop elevator that was quite interesting, it looped over at the the top and under at the bottom, and had no doors. It was, of course, in an office building, where there would be no children, who would certainly hurt themselves on it, but I found it very interesting.

For work, I was sent to Siemens in Berlin who had one of these installed. Timing your entry or exit was fun but the locals who used it every day seemed quite happy. One wag stayed on at the ground floor descending then reappeared on the "up" side standing on his head. Who said Germans don't have a sense of humour?

I would say Alexandra Palace is the subjective boundary. For this ignorant Northerner, there's the long, slow, rural gap which makes one realize that Hatfield is not, in fact, in London, so one is inclined to give Potter's Bar the benefit of the doubt.

Arsenal station is only a 2 - 3 minute walk from Emirates Stadium, so it's still most probably the busiest matchday station. You walk past it to get to Finsbury Park!

I read that the figure from Arsenal was £7.6million, which of course is still not enough. Arsenal also agree to finance improvements to Drayton Park Great Northern station, the closest station to the stadium and they didn't do that either. Drayton Park is closed on matchday, despite the platforms essentially being underneath parts of the stadium.

I would think in the past 15 years ive got on & off more at Holloway Road making my way upto the Coronet pub which is an old cinema as you know i use to go every 6 week to meet up with my 'Joe Meek' record producer friends. And as you all know Joe had his Studio and flat at 304 and the Telstar plaque is still there. A few years ago myself and one of Joe's leading girl singers Glenda Collins sat outside on the bench reminiscing about music and the singers that walked into 304 from John Leyton to Screaming Lord Sutch with a bit Richie Blackmore & Chas Hodges from Mike Berry's Outlaws thrown in. happy days from The 'Telstar' era Marc In Bletchley Towers G6XEG

But has a woefully inadequate ticket hall and a narrow staircase down to a single island platform. When the Emirates opened, British Transport Police advised that it be closed whenever there is a midweek match on - it's not open at weekends.
