Holley Sniper How To Set The IAC (Idle Air Control) in 5 minutes or less

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Holley Sniper How to Set The IAC Idle air Control in 5 minutes or less.
So you installed your Holley Sniper. You've got it running and warmed up but now you need to set the idle. Or the IAC (idle air control) to properly maintain the RPM at idle that the computer is set for.
Its' a lot easier than you think. Forget removing the air cleaner and putting tape over the IAC port. It's not neccessary.
I'll show you the easy way step by step and it will take you less than 5 minutes. Then from here after you can set the IAC in minutes with nothing but a screw driver.
So sit back and watch the video and simplify your life.

Your friend at MoonBuilt Garage led me here. IAC is carp on my Sniper Q-Jet. IAC starts out very high and once operating temperature is met/exceeded the IAC goes to 0 and idle jumps up 15-1800. I think 2% is too low. My understanding is that the system(IAC) can raise or lower the idle. If the IAC is set at very low setting it doesn't give the IAC much range of motion to lower the idle if need be. Just my thoughts. Thanks for the comment

I installed a Terminator X system on my 85 Cutlass supreme with a 355 and a TH350. I had a shop do the work since it involved a new tank etc. After getting the car it ran great but at least once a ride the car would stall while coming to a stop. Initially I thought that the ECU needs to learn my engine and that this would stop, but it didn't. I thought that I had to adjust my idle speed to make it higher than 850(more like 950) to stop it from stalling but then I found your video. I just tuned my IAC just like you said. Mine was initially at 0-2 when at hot idle. When I started your tune procedure and my car initially warmed up to 167 and started to "learn" my IAC was hanging around 8-10 so I thought I was good. I waited like 10 more minutes until the fans ran about 2-3 times and then cranked my throttle and my IAC dropped down to around 0-2. From there I started to back out the screw a 1/4th turn and pop the throttle until i got my IAC to around 7-9. I am going to try to drive the car tomorrow(I dont have time today) and hopefully this resolves my issue with stalling. The car already sounds better at idle now that I tuned the IAC, it used to surge before and the AF ratio would get really high momentarily. Now it just hangs out smooth.

It feels like something "heats" up or idles because I have to wait around 25 minutes to crank again and then i can drive around but it will die again so that's why I say its something that heats up and wont send the enough gas/power and the car dies. Everything is connected as it should and my mechanic has not find out any other issue than this system.. would you help?

Very informative. I don't have a Super Sniper yet, I'm doing my home work on it. Question: it wasn't part of you video, but Holley says the unit is 3.28" height. Is it really? I ask because w/my super charger to use a 1" air filter (on a drop base) w/my Holley carb, I have no room if the Sniper is taller than the carb. If it is 3.28" tall then I could go a 2" air filter.

Hi Daniel, Generally speaking a back fire either through the throttle body or the exhaust is a timing issue. The Iac is high because the system is trying to keep the engine running. So, my suggestion is to go back to basics. Pull the plugs and change them, then re-index the distributor. Double check your firing order. I had a Mopar that drove me crazy with a backfire. I thought for sure it was the Sniper. Nope, I had a crossed plug wire. It is easy to put blame on the Sniper because it's new and computerized. But I would go back to basics first. Then check all your sensors thru the handheld. Good Luck, Troy

  • @troykane

That sound like 1. basic throttle return (spring or linkage) hanging up. Check that first. Or the IAC holding the the throttle open. When you cycle the key the throttle returns. Look at the hand held and read the Idle Air Control at start up. Then again when it's wram over 170. Then throttle up and if it stays high read it again. Chances are that you'll see some high numbers. That means the IAC is holding the throttle open. Go thru the process to reset the IAC. Good Luck

  • @troykane

Basically where ever it is right now. Add a full turn. What you are doing is moving the throttle out of reach of the IAC. So the IAC reads Zero. At this point the engine will be revving pretty high 1500-2000 RPM. Then slowly back the screw off to get in range of the IAC. Then continue to back off to get the range you want. Hope this helps. Great question and thanks for the comment. No you let the computer control the timing. Think of it like setting the idle on a carburetor, you would disconnect the vacuum advance for that would you? Same idea. Good luck on your project.

@@troykane the only way we could get mine to idle initially was to disable to idle spark (since holley recommended it). The way I sort of understood it is it cranks the timing upon first time start up without base tune created. with it enabled it ran like absolute dog $h!t and would die after maybe a minute and a half of running. I'm far from a pro at this but the way you explain it makes it much easier to understand. Keep up the great work!

Troy , I need your help buddy ...I am not a mechanic but I instqalled my Holley Sniper on my 428 Pontiac. The IAC was sitting at 0 on Innitial Start....I have the Hyperspak system as well. I turned idl screw in 1 1/2 Turns becasue car wouldn't start ....after turning idel screws in 1 1/2 turns , the car starts fine....warms up fine...idle is a little high from turning idle screw in before starting I assume ....awesome throttle response but IAC is stuck at 0 . I let car warm up real nice. IAC still at 0 ..So to get Engine down to set idle speed 900 ...I have to back off Idle screw..until it hits taget idal 900. IAC stays on 0 ....I shut car off and now it won't start until I adjust idle scre in again ...and around and around I go. Please help....

Ok this stuff can be a bit challenging. And doing things remotely is hard, but I will do my best. Think of the IAC as a small motor that can open or close the throttle blades as requested by the computer. When the IAC shows Zero the computer is telling it to close the throttle. When the IAC is, say, at 10 it has partially opened the throttle and could continue to go higher ( open more) to say 20 or go lower to say 5. In your situation, the IAC motor is at Zero The computer is wanting to close that throttle. You want the the IAC to open that throttle to create an idle condition and have the IAC be in control. Meaning it can raise or lower the throttle. Question 1. Do you have the idle set in the Handheld? Question 2. Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Question 3. have you checked the function of the IAC in the handheld? I hope this was a helpful answer. This is a tough thing to do over the computer. Best of luck

It was too week and being sucked open I guess by the vacum. I put a tiny spring on it and now my car starts perfect when hot, returns to 900 idle everytime, mileage is way up and throttle response is awesome. Holley needs to fix that crap.

Mine works, then it doesn't, I'll be driving, all is fine , then pull up to a light and the engine surges to 1150rpm (from 750) and the car surges forward. I usually put it in neutral, and rev it, it still settles at 1150 1200 rpm until I pull over and shut it off. My IAC reads 20 (I've never seen it go higher) and stays there... I usually just go home and second guess why I ever installed this thing.

Holley sent me a new IAC and a new Hand-held for free. I replaced both. Cannot get IAC to sit between 8-12 whatevers. It's either 2 whatevers or 20+ whatevers. Another youtuber says it's supposed to be between 1-5 whatevers. Since the stock setup is at 2 whatevers, I'm going with that. I have a manual with no AC, so IAC should not ever matter. I just hope these new parts stop the engine from stalling at every intersection. Longstoryshort: I should have gone with a Weber crab. #NeverTrustHolley
