Oh please. McCarthy has nothing to do with what this Ireland team achieved. He was blessed to have Roy Keane in the team. Without Roy they were never getting into the World Cup.

@@turvus2 they did all right WITHOUT Roy Keane in the World Cup (I suppose you're one of those people will claim we could have beaten the Spanish HAD he been present). That squad showed tremendous professionalism in recovering from the upheaval and distraction Keane created.

I was so proud of Ireland that night as this was a cracking Dutch team. This was the last great Irish team.

@@derekkelly9286 proud of the way they played. 2nd Dutch goal was a lucky deflection. Ireland deserved to win on the night. Just because you go 2 nil up doesn’t mean the other side isn’t going to score especially with the talent in that Dutch team and the point that night got them through to the qualifiers in the end.

Every country had great players back then. Ireland had a squad who played entirely in the Premier League. Unlike the shite we get nowadays. Just look at Ireland and Netherlands.... no way they can compare with this team.

I forgot about Jayo's first goal against Holland. Two backheels to set it up, class! Jayo and Rayser will always be my heroes for their goals!!

I remember the like it was yesterday when was 17 at the arena stadium with my father. I had a small Irish flag with me and i made that flag as a bandana and put it on my fathers head while we chanting "come you boys in green". What a great team we had back then but it is a shame we could't say that in the present day's.

Could have gone far in that WC. Weak Spain team we would have beat with Keano. Then South Korea who although were the home side were very beatable. Then your in a semi final and anything can happen

The euro 88 team was our best side. They genuinely could’ve won euro 88 only for bad luck and a goal that should’ve never stood. This team were pretty good too. Sadly in the last 20 years no Irish team comes close.

Unbelieveable that this dutch team couldn't qualify. Too much arrogance And the tournament 2002 was one im which the good teams were eliminated early

Not many teams can go to Holland and jump into a 2-nil lead.

Good question, he wipped in the cross for the first goal with his right. His winning goal in the return game was his right. So id guess hes not a leftie. This is up there with the best Irish goals, a beautiful strike outside the box against a top quality keeper.
