Cucidati Fig Cookies Part I
Recipe:
Cucidati Cookies (Sicilian Cookies by Clara)
FILLING
Boil 2 cups of water and add 1/2 cups sugar. Let cook.
3/4 cups shelled hazel nuts
1/2 cups shelled almonds
1/2 cups shelled walnuts
1/2 cups shelled pecans
Toast all nuts on cookie sheet separately (different nuts take different times to toast).
Grind together with nuts:
1/2 lb. diced candied fruit
1/4 lb. dark raisins
1/4 lb. light raisins
1/4 lb. dates (pitted)
1 orange with rind
1 dried tangerine with rind
2 lbs. figs or (2 packages or atleast 14 oz. apiece)
Mix well all the ground ingredients.
Add 1/2 or 3/4 of the cooled sugar water to make a nice soft mixture (be careful not to make it too soft).
Save the rest of the sugar water mixture.
Add 1/2 cup whiskey to ground ingredients.
Mix well and let stand overnight. Keep in a fridge or cool place.
You may need to add the sugar-water the next day.
DOUGH
10 cups flour

1 cup cold milk
2 heaping table spoons baking powder
1 table spoon vanilla

Work flour and lard like you would pie crust.
Melt sugar in milk.
Beat egg and add vanilla.
When flour and lard are mixed well, add baking powder, then add the other ingredients and mix until you have a nice liable dough.

@@damienthonk1506 There is love and affection, connection, etc Not all families experience this. I haven't experienced anything that feels like family, and I grew up feeling I didn't know what home felt like, as there was just abuse etc where I'd been. It's only recently that I shifted from feeling so totally alone, which has only been a thing from mediation and connection with the universe. I still don't have any real connections with people, no one truly knows me, etc. Experiencing the situation like what appears to be happening with these ppl, Clara etc - does seem like a real family indeed.
People like Clara are our real national treasures.
I am thinking about Ms. Clara today as i am making her cookies for Christmas. I grew up in New Orleans which has a large Sicillian population that celebrate St. Joseph's day every year. Church ladies would come together and make literally thousands of these cookies for the St. Joseph alters held in many parishes. Over the years I have tried different recipes. While they were all delicious, none of them compare to Ms. Clara's! So now, it is my go to recipe and I think about this very special lady every year. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. We love you, ms. Clara!
Who’s here because the of self isolating with the COVID-19 pandemic? She is so comforting, funny, her recipes are simple and I miss her.

No you're not. But I've been watching for awhile. Also, I feel like the other 2 ladies are "acting" too much and ruining the Clara vibe. DON'T RUIN THE CLARA VIBE! She just needed someone to crack the nuts, I understand. Lol. (don't judge me, I'm sure they're very nice people)
I'm addicted to her! I can't stop watching her cuteness and wonderful cooking!! Sorry that she's gone. What a wonderful woman.
She is just so adorable and always seems so happy too and you can tell how much she just loves her grand daughters here too...I think it is wonderful that they want to help her and also learn how to make these cookies too...I so wish more family traditions and recipes were handed down like this.

The closest I had to a GM was "Aunt Marge" our next door neighbor when lived in LA. She overcooked a lot of stuff but I was a little kid at the time and didn't mind. I think she feared food poisoning in her day and maybe that had something to do with it. Lots of treats at her house and once made the best home made loaf bread that I ever had. RIP aunt M and uncle M.

Not odd or creepy AT all! Gosh, I learned to cook by watching my grandmother cook and to this day I still make her fun foods! HOME made fudge! Fried chicken , and everything is cooked in bacon drippings, well not the fudge but you know what I mean lol,, Bet your grandma never made fried squirrel did she or cook Poke Salad or Sallet as she called it. mmm how about Cracklins from pig rinds? See, its all what we grew up with that some people would turn their noses up at but,, we all remember as DAMN good eats! :)
What a blessing Clara left us in these videos, everyone should be so lucky to have a grandma in their family like Clara. Thanks for sharing, we have really enjoyed these videos. My daughter's middle school teacher actually shared these with her class, and my daughter came home and shared them with us.

I have never known anyone else who makes these!!! Except Aunt Sylvia. It was always a family event grinding the ingredients in the old meat grinder! We did it Thanksgiving weekend and my mother would make the cookies all month. And we would eat them all month! Watching this is bringing me so much joy. I'm a proud Sicillian. MP light ......you are so lucky to have known your grandparents. Mine were either dead or very old. I needed a recipe for these cookies. I'm not Sicilian but from parents who never admitted they were children of immigrants through Ellis Island. Now I make cookies for my husband and myself. Store bought cookies will not do. I enjoy this lady as my parents grew up during the depression.
June 18, 2020, I came across Claras cooking show searching for a recipe and clicked on her poor mans meal. I am hooked! And I fell in love with her. What an amazing woman and my gosh, what a memory. I loved the stories. I’m so sad that she is gone but happy that she left so many of us these treasured recipes. With this coved-19 going on and money being tight these recipes are perfect for feeding a family of five on a tight budget. Thank you and God bless you for sharing you’re grandma Clara with so many of us. 💗
My dad loved walnuts he was always cracking and eating walnuts wow that’s a lot of work old school for sure bet this is gonna be good.
My dear aunt who is 89 is my godmother and she would make these for me for Christmas each year. They are still my favorite
Thank you, this is why I love our older adults, thank you for creating these videos. I miss my older baking friends
I am so glad that there are videos of you so that we can re watch now that you are gone.
I love revisiting these videos. Nana Clara reminds me of my Nana Flora. I’d like to think you and my Nana are in heaven having coffee together and chatting about the good old days. ❤️
It would be an experience to just spend a day in the kitchen with her, cook with her and talk with her, listening to her awesome stories. Clara is so precious.
Clara's videos are the best! Watching these cuccidati Christmas cookies part one and two get me ready for the holiday, the past two years my mother died and I just didn't have the strength or will power to do make these. This year I'm making them again and Clara's recipe is simply the best. If you put the cookies in large tins and layer them with wax paper and foil they will last till march! this recipe is complex however I find it to be one of the best, from time to time I would add mini chocolate chips which give them a nice touch. If you are interested in making something that is a bit of a challenge then try these they won't disappoint. Happy Holidays to all
What a beautiful memory

I love this channel and Clara! She seems so nice and wholesome ☺️!
Love that she is passing the recipe down to her granddaughter and they are making it together ♥️
Wow!!!!! This recipe is very involved. She's amazing watching her make these is incredible. I personally wouldn't have the patience to make these.
My great aunt (born in 1914, oldest girl in family of 11 kids) told me it was her job to wash the big cooking pots. She decided not to do them & starting hiding them outside in the chicken house. After a few days her mom wondered where all the pots were. Her brother told and she had to spend 4 hours cleaning them all up and only had bread and chicken broth for dinner. She still hated cleaning the pots. My favorite uncle (born in 1907) always washed the pots; they cooked & canned together.
Clara you're so adorable! I miss you so much nana Clara. Love you
Ahh I used to watch these because I missed my Sicilian grandfather. But now I watch because I miss Clara. It’s so cool we have these ♥️

This is so enlightening, how our ancestors food was so different. The times were so different, we are perhaps a little spoiled. I remember going to my grandmothers' house on Christmas day. My mother and aunts cooked for weeks. The food was delicious and the best part was being together. Making memories and being about to look back and reflect on what was really important.
