EDIT: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD, BE WARNED IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE YET. The moment that broke me was then John confessed to Tim about how easy it would be to let go and die... when Tim started crying I just couldn't hold it anymore. Their chemistry, acting... it was perfection. This movie is a piece of art. Now, do I want to "suffer" more by reading the book?

  • @goodgirlkay

I keep reading the book over and over since I watched the movie about a month ago. It is the second most painful book I have read. If your heart can stomach the heartache, then go for it. But be warned that Tim goes into excruciating detail about John's illness and deterioration. It just makes me cry over and over again to think that these 2 young men actually endured this horrible experience, while I was just an oblivious little girl half way around the world.

Tim Conigrave facilitated my coming out in 1989 when I was 15 years of age through ACON (Aids Council of New South Wales.) He was inspirational to me and many, many gay men, both young and old, in a time when being gay was not generally accepted in the broader community. He taught us all how to stand up and take pride in our sexuality. He was very aware of safe sex practices (by then) as most of the local gay community was still coming to terms with the AIDS epidemic. I only found out after he had died that he had been sick for a long time. I think he would have been quite humbled that his life story made it to the screen. Truly, a great gay man. Fondly remembered. Never forgotten.

So beautiful and yet so tragic at the same time. I watch this masterpiece over and over for inspiration, even though it tears my heart into a million pieces every time. This is my way if honoring John and Tim for having given us this story. As a gay man living with HIV for the past 30 years I bear witness to the devastation of this terrible disease. I got infected in 1989 at the age of 25, just as I was discovering my true sexual orientation and know first hand about the rejection which have lead to a very single life for me and I guess a lot if people in my position. I wish for everybody to experience the kind of love that these 2 had, and, if it comes to the end of our lives, to have it end with dignity.

You should definitely get the book. But if the movie made you sad, the book will rip your heart out. Tim Conigrave's memoir has redefined what love means to me. It isn't just some tingling sensation or being sexually attracted to someone. The way he took care of his dying partner is the truest demonstration of love I have ever encountered. The excruciating details of John Caleo's suffering in the book is hard to take...and maybe not for everyone.

In a way i was totally awed by them and these made me discover the pure love and longing that 2 people can have. I'll recommend a few for your sake : Call Me by Your Name, Mario, Boys (Jongens), The Way He Looks, God's Own Country, Weekend, Just a Question of Love, Alex Strangelove, Romeos, Esteros, Hidden Kisses Some are obviously better than the others, but among the many that ive seen...these are the ones that have stuck with me.
