Holbein: Capturing Character

Hans Holbein the Younger (1497/98-1543) was among the most skilled, versatile, and inventive artists of the early 1500s. He created captivating portraits of courtiers, merchants, scholars, and statesmen in Basel, Switzerland, and later in England, and served as a court painter to Tudor King Henry VIII (1491-1547). Enriched by inscriptions, insignia, and evocative attributes, his portraits comprise eloquent visual statements of personal identity and illuminate the Renaissance culture of erudition, self-fashioning, luxury, and wit.
This exhibition was on view at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York City from February 11 through May 15, 2022.

Holbein's ability to capture the character of his sitters is astounding!

Wow wow wow wow … the most exciting pure artist ever … his extraordinary use of the original palette is breathtaking … his drawing natural skill is beyond use of line … is more volumetric and multidimensional … the use of values is dynamic … in my humble opinion Holbein and Botticelli were the inventors of the modern idea of the human image in the collective mind … kudos for this marvelous exposition … is a gift for the Humanity

Holbein painted real people. All other portraits appear to be very stylised and unreal. I always look at those squinting, in an effort to get some idea what the sitter actually looked like.

I love portrait paintings by Holbein and van Eyck. But my favourit are the portraits (date c. 1475) of Knight and Lord Ivar Axelsson (Tott) and his second wife Magdalena Karlsdotter, the daughter of King Karl Knutsson of Sweden. You can see them in Denmark, Gärnäs castle.

As they said, many of the pieces are so fragile, they are likely not leaving the Morgan.

Would love to have viewed this. To me Holbein creates a real tangible portrait. I am sure the sitter looked like that. Well, perhaps a bit of Photoshop!
