How do HOKA running shoes compare to On running shoes? In this episode, we seek to answer that question comprehensively, by talking through how HOKA and On’s most popular daily mileage models stack up against each other and comparing them in terms of cushioning, energy return, stability, durability, and fit.
HOKA and On are two of the fastest growing running shoe brands in the world, so it should come as no surprise that both brands make great running shoes!
It’s important to note that there's a lot of differences between the models in each respective brand's line-up, so it’s impossible to draw blanket conclusions as to how HOKA compare to On.
However, comparing their daily mileage staples - which for HOKA includes the Bondi, Clifton, Gaviota and Arahi; and for On includes the Cloudeclipse, Cloudmonster, Cloudsurfer, Cloudstratus and Cloudruner - we’ve come to the following conclusions:
Cushioning: The On Cloudeclipse eclipse the HOKA Bondi in terms of soft, plush feeling cushioning in the neutral category. The HOKA Gaviota offers the most cushioning in the stability category.
Energy return: On shoes are likely to feel more propulsive, due to the make-up of CloudTec cushioning and those full-length Speedboards (featured in the Cloudmonster and Cloudstratus). That said, the HOKA Mach (not ranged at Run4It) could be used for daily miles and does offer a lot of energy return.
Stability: Both brands' neutral shoes offer comparable levels of support. However HOKA stability shoes offer greater levels of support than On stability shoes. If your feet pronate to a greater degree and you have unstable ankles, the HOKA Arahi and HOKA Gaviota will provide much more support than On’s Cloudrunner.
Durability: On shoes are likely to outlast HOKA shoes, unless you opt for specific models within HOKA’s line-up that have a lot more outsole rubber (such as the HOKA Bondi).
Fit: Fit really comes down to foot shape and personal preference, however if you have broader feet, HOKA offer an amazing amount of choice when it comes to width, with wide-fit versions in all of the models.
