    Great points. I have the Topo Hydroventure and wore at Beast of the East pacing 27 mi in a downpour. Gortex doesn’t drain well and if it’s going to be raining or deep water crossings above the ankles definitely isn’t a good shoe choice. The SG5 definitely stretches too much. Ran GDR in a new pair out the box. So hard to keep tight and that no pad tongue they tried to cut weight with is not good. Lace cut into my tendon. I prefer the padded tongue because I ran a 12 miler a week later in the and gave me extensor tendinitis for over 6 mos.

    I think Im going to grab these. There's really not a whole lot of options for winter trail running shoes out there. After trying these on and the Thundercross GTX, these felt way better. Defintely agree on the iffy stability though... I guess we'll see how they do bombing down Mt Washington in micro spikes soon.

    would this shoe be good for running in hot and humid parts of Asia (vietnam, cambodia etc) ?

  • @UltraTrailSteven

    @UltraTrailSteven

    6 ай бұрын

    Well it is designed to keep moisture out, but once it gets it, it doesn't drain or dry well. The hot/humid weather may not be suited well for these.

    Personally i never run in Goretex shoes. Waterproof means that when you get water in the shoes, and you eventually do in a wet run, the water can't get out again. So run in a bathtub. I prefer a shoe with a good grip, f.i. an Inov8 shoe and some warm merino wool socks. Even in very cold and/or wet conditions its no problem to keep my feet warm. Warm socks is much more important than waterproof shoes.

    Depends on the conditions. In snow, I’ll take Goretex all day long. If it’s pouring rain or there’s creek crossings, no way.

    I don't think the knit mesh upper on the regular 5 is great at all. Unlike the 4, it soaks up water and mud and doesn't let it go. It's good to know the Gortex bootie will help keep that out, but using a different material for the outer part would go a long way, too.

    How would the Gore Tex keep your feet warm? There's no insulation properties... Also... How isn't it breathable? GTX is a waterproof breathable membrane... You also shouldn't wear 2 pairs of socks. Doesn't allow your foot to breathe properly, it hurts with air circulation.

  • @UltraTrailSteven

    They keep your feet warm because they do not breathe. Watch the tissue test and you’ll clearly see there is no airflow.

    @@UltraTrailSteven Gore-tex was the company that first came up with it accidentally. Many other brands have came up with their own version over the years once patents expired. The North Face's Hyvent technology is a good example. Water is a bigger particle than air, air can travel through the membrane and water cannot. Literally dozens of companies have been using Gore and other versions since the 70s in everything from footwear, to Outerwear and accessories. Yes technically, a GTX membrane is less breathable than full mesh, because the membrane is a material that is swen into the mesh to create a block from water. So the membrane vs pure mesh, the mesh is more breathable... However, the mesh has zero waterproof properties. Whereas a Gore bladder allows for the material to be waterproof, BUT breathable. Gore by itself has no insulation properties, unless you are using their infnium technology. By your logic, you can say flip flops are more breathable than shoes, because they're more open. But that doesn't mean shoes are going to keep your feet warm. Also, wearing 2 pairs of socks is just a bad idea everytime. Quick Google searches will tell you these things.
