Polygon made an review of this game. The reviewer, some Indian chick, whined how she longed for more Indian representation in the books, since series had like two Indian sisters. Then she starts to talk about Hogwarts Legacy, set in 1890 Scottish countryside, it has multiple Indian students and even professors. Instead of being happy to be representated in such a way, she says it all makes her skeptical. Quote: "While Rowling’s racial representation has never been good, tossing a half-dozen Indians into the Scottish countryside willy-nilly isn’t exactly better. Where did they come from - India, which was still under British rule in the 1800s? And where did they all go by the time Harry got there?"

Honestly the house picking was one of the most disappointing things in the game... until I found out that your house barely even changes anything in the game other than the early part of a single main quest and then I realized that they simply put the whole 'house thing' on the wayside altogether. Anyway, literally a fucking single dialogue choice (that matters) with pretty easily discernable 'house alignments' to it. That's all it takes. And then you just get to cheat around it anyway with no consequences. And if you'd like a bit more of an actual "sorting experience"... Register to our special site now! No, thanks. Go fuck yourselves. Ravenclaw btw. The only house which literally didn't get even a 'secondary companion' character like Hufflepuff's Sweeting girl ended up being.

I enjoyed Hogwarts Legacy despite not being much of a HP fan. It's a wonderful open world rpg. It's also refreshing to have a product working on release, unlike recent RPGs ives played (Pokemon Violet and Cyberpunk 2077). I also love how much this game has upset whiny activists.

I literally put my controller and thought to the myself, “Wtf is wrong with this transgender persons voice?” It totally is a half-baked idea and I agree…..after the controversy they added her/him/them/it in after production was complete. It totally took me out of the world and it’s immersion breaking.

You hit most of the points I've made about the game. I'm especially glad you mentioned something that no one else seems to and that's the deliberate use of the word "they" instead of he or she. A person is never a "they." The two points I believe you missed are out of your companions there's only 1 white guy. Only 1 of your friends is considered "evil" and you can even send this friend to wizard jail at the end. That of course must be the 1 white guy. The other point of the "EMPOWERMENT" you have a little girl, Poppy, and she's always saying "I'm not afraid I'll take on all the poachers RAWR." No. You are a little girl who barely knows any magic and these are adults who are battle hardened wizards. You SHOULD be afraid. It is moranic that you're not and that SHOULD result in consequences for Poppy, but of course it can't. If the enemies in this game are such pathetic strawmen then your character is not "brave" you aren't doing anything heroic and therefor your character is boring. There is more than I could add, but I did believe those two were the most worth mentioning in addition to your review.

Fun fact: SIRona Ryan's voice is on other languages voiced by females.

The goblin thing does make me laugh. The pronouns thing is stupid because "they" get upset when "they" aren't referred to correctly, so now no one gets to be referred to properly, when "they" are like 0.01% of the population, whatever. The house elves do not want to be free, expect Dobby and he's literally scorned for being free and dying because of it too, freedom literally kills them. It's a huge things in the book, they are a cursed race but the why of it is mostly mystery. I like to imagine that everyone tends to treat them like shit because of some ancient upset in the wizard world, but we'll never know. Better left that way too because Rowling's explanations for things in her books are often horrifying or down right dumb... also: big problem in HP in general is how lack luster the magic system is IMO

The comparison is made because some fiction "scholars" have decided that certain fantasy races are directly correlated to real world races, and so project human history onto fictional worlds. Goblins and orcs fall into this category most often, where they've decided that depicting these races at all is inherently offensive.

@@thetoadwalker3010 I'm familiar with the Orc one, that was done by academics and political activists who don't really understand fiction writing, or Tolkien. Some of what they said is downright insulting. I've got a background in writing and creating fantasy races and species myself, so I find it just wrong that a fantasy race I create should reflect a real life social issue. It's why I dislike what get's called 'woke' these days.

I miss the days of actually being able to be the character you want to be, like in Fallout New Vegas. Like yeah you're a courier without choice, but you can at least choose to be a good guy, an asshole, chaotic, neutral, or anything in between. Good times.. Modern games needs to bring back the true values of RPGs if videogames are to survive, that being given a choice that actually means something.

The controversy surrounding this game is straight-up hilarious, because she didn't say anything that technically wasn't true. Everyone these days has an opinion, but there is a difference between an opinion and facts, she stated facts, and even went as far as to say she supports their cause. The reality is that no one needs to know what your sexuality is, keep it to yourself. There's only two people that need to know, yourself and your partner. Who cares what other people think, and stop trying to get everyone to agree with you. The joke is on them, because it clearly shows they're not happy with themselves. So you have the nerve to not accept yourself for who you are, and then you have even more nerve to get mad at others that don't accept you for who you are not.

Definitely the best part of the game was Hogwarts itself. The architecture and artwork is beautiful and there are even places where it will play classical music for you. It’s also absolutely enormous and I had a ton of fun exploring it and solving puzzles.

Don’t worry, someone dumb enough would call this game a masterpiece. Hell, people call Cyberpunk 2077 a masterpiece.

Honestly? Not really. In the first couple of books Harry is definitely sue-ish but by the end he's shockingly useless and only acts as an extension of his teachers' desires and wins only through plot contrivance despite being overwhelmingly overmatched. He doesn't fit the criteria for a sue but definitely for an author-fiat bullshit asspull.

If it didn't matter, why do the pronoun police throw a shit-kicking fit whenever you get their self-proclaimed pronoun wrong? If it doesn't matter, why the hell are pronouns such a big deal today for an angry and outspoken subset of the population? If it doesn't matter, why are laws being proposed in first-world countries threatening to arrest people just for getting people's pronouns wrong. No, I'm afraid it IS a big deal. Our language is being twisted and mutilated in such a way to set traps up for ostracization, criminalization, and to even alter our very thoughts so that we are always in line with the Party's policy. Pronouns were never meant to serve as part of your personal identity, but to be a shorthand for how others identify you. They were never meant to be titles by which we are compelled to refer others as though they're aristocrats looking down their noses at the filthy peasants. But that's exactly what they are: regal titles for a spoiled, entitled, and over-privileged and self-proclaimed aristocracy.

The combat is consolized garbage, it's not good and it's not fun, it just looks cool for the first 5 minutes after which it becomes a slog. The story is bad fanfic tier writing, what's the point of it being time appropriate when 1890s Hogwarts is more diverse than current day London? This is not a good game, it's an insult to sanity, gaming and the HP IP.

It cracked me up when you went off on Ms. Wakanda, because I LITERALLY had the exact same reaction. Yeah, there's some buried in-universe explanation for this, but it seems so stupidly panderlicious that I almost woke up the neighbors cackling over this crap. Oh...and you think the curse combo is OP, go full stealth and put Binding III or Ambush III on all your gear. I can two-shot Trolls from stealth using Invis potions. Hell, they're the only ones I can't one-shot (though bosses won't let you stealth).

Sebastian saves the game, also the game has soul in some areas details for the Potterfrogs, the Kraken tentacles in the lake, all the Potterfrog references in points of interests, Ominis is the mathernal side Grandpa of Voldemort, etc. Things like that. Everyone wanted a Bully 2 though & some mods can bring it closer to that now there is mods to attack students instead of just cats & deers lol. Also immersion mods to sit down & stuff. And an online mod for RP servers I guess that is not yet complete. This game will be very good for Potterfans in 1 year.

It's not necessarily one or the other as a game can be fun and engaging to play regardless of the quantity of woke content in the game. It's not like writers and artists are also doing the gameplay and level designs (unless it's a really small indie company then there are possibilities of overlaps). With that said, if you don't like elements of the "progressive" agenda in your games you probably shouldn't be spending your money on brand new copies of these types of games if you're a principled individual, even if the gameplay looks like it's right up your alley. Even if I was an HP fan, I'd never buy this game due to the absurd levels of diversity and other "progressive" content.

I found it weird that there wasn't a Ravenclaw companion. Would have been neat if the companions were like actual friends who, maybe depending on how much of their questline you've done, join you on certain story missions including the bug final mission. But that would have required effort I suppose.

The lack of a moral system and having the choice to be a 'good' or 'bad' wizard/witch is extremely disappointing. I'd be okay with waiting another year for this game if that's what they needed to implement such a mechanic. I absolutely love the type of games where you can start off as a villain and be an as$hole to everyone but have a redemption arc, or you start off as good and change into a villain over the course of the game. I love that sh*t and it's severely lacking with this game.

One of the few reviews that calls out the wokeness of this game. Great review|👏

Hmm idk man i think you got nostalgia goggles for the HP franchise on. Usualy youd destroy a game like this.Its the ultimate woke cringe game with a big nice looking world. Letting that triple A sheen gloss over your eyes. Also things youd normally tear apart you just say ehh its becoming standard so its fine. Your slipping man. Dont let them make all this cringe woke shet become normal.

I have a feeling the "boycott" was at least partially astroturfed by the publisher. I'm sure there were people seething unironically but the boycott got this game so much press and backfired so hard that I can't help but think it was "promoted" by a PR firm.

"Millions of Goblins must die"

Why would there not be Quidditch? It's a staple of the series. I get it would have been a pain to program, particularly the AI, but that could have gone a long way in boosting the game quality and content.

look at tze flying mechanics if u wanna have a decent quidditch minigame u need way way better optimized flying mechanics before quidditch will become implementable at this point its impossible to have fun quidditch minigame at all as i said look at the lame flying mechanic 😊

I understand that Quidditch is a staple of Harry Potter, but it's actually a really stupid game. I don't want a chasing small flying object minigame.

@@VinnyBloo You are the literal 1% lmao Still, it couldve been optional. Its still a staple Guess you must think other sports are stupid like Football or basketball. You just run in on game to the end and the other game, just run back and forth tossing a ball into the basket

Natty's comment about the wands really bugged me cause I'm a huge wand lore nerd. Wands bring focus and clarity to using magic. Wandless magic is difficult and readily yields unpredictable results unless you're very experienced with it. The different woods, cores, and characteristics impact *how* a wand will help a wizard channel magic so that certain kinds of spells will be especially strong or precise depending on the wizard's innate qualities. It's why wizards form a bond with their wands. Instead of "wandless magic is just as strong and more instinctive", she should have said "Wandless magic can be just as strong but it takes much concentration and practice. I've enjoyed learning to use a wand. It's more instinctive and also feels much more dramatic."

Fucking Voldemort used wands, and it's sort of his undoing; if the option really existed NOT to use one, not to depend on a thing that can fight you or be knocked out of your hand, he would have done so.

Regarding the Demiguises, the map tells you straight up how many are at each location and even each SUB-location in the case of Hogwarts. And Revelio is your defacto "Detective Vision" of sorts, so you just cast the spell and start looking through walls for items shining blue (granted, only at night). If you see one, you just work your way over to it. It's really not that hard to keep track of, ESPECIALLY compared to some of the other collectables that are a real pain in the ass to find when you start nearing the end, like Merlin Trials; Butterflies; and Landing Platforms.

On Nexus there was a mod to make the Champions pants look better and the modder is under supervision from a "Community Manager". Butthurt activists ruining mods.

Nexusmods, the website where you can still not download Non Newtonian mod for Spider-Man Remastered because "encouraging bad ideas", but you can also still totally download a nazi flag mod for Bloodrayne Revamped. So basically, as long as the game is not a famous one, you can still be offensive. (I'd be for all mods no matter the game to be what the modder wants be it offensive or not, but it seems that our Nexus Pals would rather change their principle depending on the Mainstream appeal of the game)

You pretty much said exactly everything I felt. The final boss was the only somewhat challenging combat in the game. But with 25 health potions at the ready? Not so much. I think because they created such a nice world and offered lots of reward without tying it behind monetization it sat real nice with me.

Pretty sure I saw Sebastian studying MK in the forbidden section.

The Uagadou thing was pretty ridiculous. A super speshul school where they use wandless magic instead and that it's normal. Making the very existence of wands in Potterverse entirely pointless and wouldn't have been developed in the first place.

It's a decent enough game I think. As you said the beginning was "magical" but it quickly loses its "charms". ;-) My biggest gripe is how surface level and naive everything is in both gameplay and story/worldbuilding. You're this Jesus-Like figure that always is amazing immediately, everyone loves you, every special thing (room of requirement, secret passages etc) is just presented to you. There is also no real antagonist/rival. Nothing is ever questioned or made more difficult for you. Even in the one questline that resembles some character conflict and growth, it's really just Ominis vs Sebastian, not you. In reality, you really are a brutal killer (even without unforgivables), that commits genocide on Goblins, captures, imprisons, grooms and sells creature for your own benefit and is actually quite manipulative and evil towards other characters at times. Gameplay wise everything is quite shallow. Crossed wands? Over after two rounds, you're the duelling jesus. Riddles? Solution told to you within seconds. Exploration? Barely anything can be done before the mainquest or a sidequest specifically tells you how to do it. Wann find the room of requirement? Nope, only once it is gifted to you. Wanna find secret passages to Hogsmead (the one eyed with is RIGHT THERE)? nope, only once a quest gifts it to you. Wanna do amything at your own pace or priority (like doing dark arts first)? Nope, only when the mainquest allows it/gifts it to you. I'm still having quite some fun with the conbat and the sebastian questline, but it seems to amount to nothing of real consequence. I'm flinging crucio and imperio left and right, but no one cares, lol. All in all maybe a 7/10, possibly a 6/10 depending on the last third of the game.

"You're this Jesus-Like figure that always is amazing immediately, everyone loves you" I mean...that's Voldemort right there too, only person who didn't trust him was Dumbledore, but he was liked by everyone and seemed like a Jesus figure while hiding his darkness (only failing with Dumbledore) So no gripe with that here, but the rest you are correct.

You're the only game reviewer that talks about biases I care about. If they make a 2nd one I hope they address these issues you brought up. I'd love it to be like KOTOR week evil options, but 4 houses is a lot. At best I think they make a community vote on DLC for houses. Even so they could modify the stat scaling, and house spells. G: normal mode H: Hard mode, lower stats and leveling R: higher leveling, easy mode S: more "good" guys attack you

What is the point of an Harry Potter rpg where you cannot potentially play as Voldemort? The didn't think this one through. They didn't want to offend anyone and played it safe but it ends up being insipid.
