    I wish there had been things like go pro cameras when I sailed Hobie's through the '90s. Lots of great times that live now only in my memory. Great video!

    Thank! We're so lucky these days with the available Technology. Just 15 years ago I had the first 'action cam' called the Oregon which at the time we saw as a miracle, now the footage is unwatchable!

    Brings memories.My girlfriends dad had a Hobie 16 in my teens. A boat following us clocked us at 2o MPH with two person crew. about 10 yrs ago or so I met that guy Suares who became Hobie International Champ on H16s in the Caribbean. Awesome video. Enjoyed it.

    I had an 18 and had a hard time finding others to sail out in the ocean with me. Then I bought a 17 which I truly loved. Fast single handed sailing with no pitch polling, just punched thru the waves. I had to give up because I had no where to store and when I did find a place some kids played on my mast and broke the comp tip. Last week I picked up a free 16 on Craigslist. No sails and a small punched hole in one hull. There are a few other issues, but hopefully, I can get this back on the water wih some work and TLC. If there is anyone who has an extra descent set of sails I can pick up at not too much money let me know. I need a few other parts to bring this one back to life. I hated seeing this boat disregarded. I wasn't even planning on getting another boat at that moment although I had been drooling every time I saw one sailing.

    I had the lucky Chance do go out with Joe on the Hobie 16 a few days ago. Even we stayed slightly underneath the 23 kts - it was breathtaking and an unforgetable experience - everyone should put this kind of a speed-ride on his bucket list. Good Luck to all of You to have the chance to go out with Joe on a Joyride Three Thumps up - even if I have only two - and Joe... Good Luck breaking Your personal record -have fun gowing for it and share the results if possible ... looking forward to our next joyride!!!

    definitely the fastest hobie 16 sailing i've seen so far on youtube. maybe the fastest ever, good job men. it takes nads to let the boat go that fast. a pitchpole at that speed would probably result in broken parts yours and the boat

    So my friend and I have sailed his Catalina 22 on a number of occasions and it's always been a good time. One day recently I mentioned that I always wanted to get a Hobie 16 and he says, "Hey, I've got one. Had it for years. It's been sitting under some trees for like 15 years. Want it?" I'm like, "hell yeah!" So I snatched it up for a mere $250. Actually he didn't want anything for it at all but I said, "Look, I'll get $300 from the ATM (maximum they'll give you in one day) and I'll take us both to lunch and you give you the rest. He agreed. So I've been restoring this amazing boat for a few months. It's an older model, from somewhere in the '70s so it's a classic. This weekend it finally goes in the water. I can't wait!! When I started I didn't know a trampoline from a trapeze but your videos are what made it possible and I totally appreciate you and your amazing videos!! Thank you! Dan

    with the 16 I don't measure the pressure with a gauge (like we would on F18 or Tornado) I get the pressure by seeing how easy it is to sheet so that the blocks are touching. For more explanation check out this one - kzread.info/dash/bejne/anhnrdhspcq2mLw.html

    Hey Joe, nice video, but no cigar. the wind is about 12-15 knots ( typical light wind for greece i guess). Back in the day, for heavy weather, e.g. the first World Championships with 25 knots and 25 foot swells out past Diamond head for the down wind leg, we would rake the mast back 6 inches so fully sheeted the boom was down on the traveller, then drill a big steel bolt in place of the stock mast rotate stops, so the mast would swing 80 degrees each way in place of stock 60 degrees and bend like shit in the big gusts, flatten the sail like a pancake, and stay upright, we would install foot loops at the aft end of hulls with righting line from same point for crew to hang onto. crew would be in skippers lap, with crews left foot on rudder case on starboard tack, and when the 25 knot gust came, the jib would not be sheeted at all to avoid pitch pole, tks for the memories! We've upgraded our boats with the new EPO3 rudder blades which improve the control at high speeds. The boat in the video is from 2014.

    It's been a constant battle to keep clean. When it's not so hot the water seems to bead off no problem, more tricky when it's very hot and the salt sets on the lens. I would guess that a trapeze line can hold the weight of anyone who is agile enough to move out onto it. 150kgs - just a guess - i'm 100 and have never had a problem.

    Was the jib sail furling in a bit? If so, correcting that would yield more speed, wouldn’t it?

  • @JoyriderTV

    @JoyriderTV

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, if the crew had been a bit more 'active' on the jib sheet we could have notched up a bit more speed. The reason it was flapping slightly was that it was better for it to be slightly loose than too tight.

    Man I love the H16! I have two myself. I actually attach Trapseats to either side of the H16 so those with disAbilities can sailing the H16. I will post a video of this at funtosail.com . I also posted both of your high speed videos at my site also. As usually your videos are awesome. So what camera and gps models are you using?

  • @JoyriderTV

    @JoyriderTV

    6 жыл бұрын

    For these videos i was using a Gopro Hero 3 black set to 1080, since then I have upgraded to a Hero 5 which i still set to 1080. I use two different GPS' my old faithful is a Timex Ironman Global Trainer which is very good although it can take a bit of time to find the satellites, my other is a LOCOSYS GW60 which is good as it gives the average speed over different distances as well as the top speed.

    Hard to tell if Hairfarm's comment is smart or dumb. If he's never pitch-poled a Hobie, then it's dumb. If he has, then he'll know that your fastest point of sailing is with that leeward keel a millimetre from digging in, at which point it is a risk/speed trade-off...
