That is probably the best value and performance upgrade for any RTR that I've seen.
That thing is unbelievable for $40. It’s definitely going in my Trx4 sport build. Great honest review. Keep it up.
Great video on the details of what makes this a true affordable upgrade. I have one in each of my crawlers. 👍
I have been a do or die, "brushless is best, period" rc dude since they came out. Even in crawling. Especially in crawling. Until a week ago. (Long story short, 30 years ago I raced brushed 2wd stock truck. I know more about brushed than most ppl.) NOW, I'm gonna do brushed ONLY for crawling! I remember the old adage, "what goes around comes around", again! LOL! Love your videos!
I have one in my SCX10 2. I love the simplicity of use and advanced control through the programming card. Definitely a "must have" if you run a brushed system.

It can be simple or very advance. Crazy range for all users.
I have this ESC on my SCX10, works well so far!
I'm ordering one today..thanks for the review!
I'm waiting for my 1080 to arrive via mail. Man i can't wait to test this baby out 👍
I have had this in my TRX4 well over a year now, still amazed at how it runs along with the setting tweaked to how I want it. I need it on my Twin Hammers for crawl/trail/bash and my Gen7 for crawling. Paired with Holmes HobbiesTrailmasters and you’ve one hell of a brushed setup.

crazy how good it is huh?
I bought this with my first crawler kit. I'm blown away with the price I paid. 40 bucks. To put it in perspective the last speed control I bought was a Novak roost. (When esc's were fairly new technology lol.) I think I paid a 100 ish then late 80's early 90. Nitro ruled the day back then because of cost and run time. My kids are young and might not ever get to experience pipe burns and tears running from their eyes while tuning a hot nitro setup.
I have been running this esc for a while now and love it!

Durable too.
Great video :) I myself have the controller as well and am absolutely thrilled. Nice easy installation and adjustment.
Great video. Thanks for pointing out how this can be more useful in an ESC than a brushless motor. I sometimes think all these groups I belong to on Facebook for RC Crawlers are just pre-madonna boys trying to show off their money or else they're bored because they all put these brushless motors in there Crawlers and spend a couple hundred bucks and I really don't think they crawl any better than the stock Motors. The HW 1080 is fantastic I've got it in one of my axles and it works great. Definitely one of the top upgrades along with steering servos and wheels Tire combos way more important I think for crawling than a brushless motor.

This is very good esc, the reason for Brushless over Brushed tho is build quality, longevity. Im sure their's a good share of PriMadonnas out there, but a brushed is no match when comparing to a quality brushless set up. brushless has far better lifespan, great in water, no brushes to deal with or replace.. This is the best of the best tho for low money brushed set up without question. Im curious what brushed motor people are matching it with for best performance speed/torque..
Thank you for this review i was debating if i was gonna spend "holmes hobby" money because i absolutely love the esc i have from them or try hobbywing again (first time was the xr10 combo). Looks like i got my answer great video.
Excellent but beware that even when turned off it drains the battery slowly... So always unplug your lipo

thanx...really clearly explained...im confident in setting up mine now....im ni middle of my first rc build
Got it in my TRX4 Sport kit build, its so smooth at low speed and has a great configurable drag brake. I thought about getting the AXE system but this is a much lower price that gives great performance & compatable with a wider range of brushed motors... Recommended not just as an RTR upgrade but as standalone ESC to install in any Crawler kit build :-)

So if I use this esc on a racing brushed Orion motor (27t I think) I’m able to dumb down this brushed racing motor for crawling? Currently building my scx10.2 and I think since I found this brand new Orion motor from my tool box I hope it’s compatible w this 1080
Awesome video I have this set up in my next video on a custom bruiser build
It's an awesome ESC ,,, I use it in my first Veterans build an I was very surprised how smooth and control ,,, and for that price uffff can't beat that

Got this installed on my rr10 bomber and its great on trailing,crawling and cheap:)
I have used Hobbywing ESCs for many years now, whether that's on my boats, planes or cars. They have the best bang for the buck, with easy to program setups. That program card can be used for most of them, just make sure to use the program list in the ESC manual and not the label on the card. No wonder so many manufacturers are using Hobbywing ESCs and labeling them as their own, such as Losi with the Dynamite label.

What is the PWM Frequency? And the "start mode punch".. does that ease the throttle on?
@nemocheerio
4 жыл бұрын
@@MrsRabbit8 If you raise the PWM frequency it will make the truck accelerate smoother but also it will run completely silent. No electronic noise. Just the bearings and gears turning. It is spectacular. I have a Mamba Monster X, it's a really good ESC but the thing just screams with electrical noise all the time. It's super annoying when crawling cause you are always standing over or near the truck. Just watch the temperature. Raising the PWM can cause the ESC to run hotter. But as we are just crawling, I don't think it's really an issue. And yes, punch is how abrupt the thing takes off.

@@nemocheerio awesome thank you! I will order one now, I have a question maybe you may know. Ive got .5mod pinion and spur. They are louder. Which I kind of like, it's got a growl... BUT does that mean I need a better mesh? Are bigger teeth louder? Thanks for the reply, much appreciated.
@nemocheerio
4 жыл бұрын
@@MrsRabbit8 Different gears make different sounds. Different cars make different sounds. I use the piece of paper method to set my mesh if I have an adjustable motor mount. Take a strip of paper and put it between the spur and the pinion. Push your gears together and tighten the motor down. Turn the gears to roll the strip of paper out and you should have a pretty good mesh. Move the spur back and forth by hand at this point and you can learn exactly how much play you should be looking for between the gears. Eventually you will learn to set the mesh by hand, looking for that little bit of play between the teeth.
@MrsRabbit8

Thank you, much appreciated! Okay cool, I used the piece of paper, works great, same nice growl. Ive got an scx24 with the (somewhat silly) 370 with 3D motor mount. I actually like it, but it's a heavy motor, sitting a bit high, so I have done some CG work. It is better than stock, but if it had a lower CG motor, then those CG mods would have made it even better instead of simply compensating... but I like the power, and also like the ridiculousness of such a big motor. Not a comp rig. Great for mudding though! Very fun overall. Now to build something else! Though it's hard to imagine any build ever being done done.
Good demonstration. Thank you.👍
Best crawler esc I ha e 3 of them and love them all

The 1080 is a FANTASTIC! brushed controller. I was very, very happy with every aspect of it including it's thermals (the thing just gets warm, not hot, even on sustained full-throttle on 12T Titan) before I upgraded to brushless. I had my 1080 in an Arrma Granite 4x4; definitely not a crawler! The programming card is a great inclusion since it really seems like so many car/truck ESCs these days are really just re-branded Hobbywing ESCs, so the card works on a bunch of non-HobbyWing ESCs.

Grabbed 2 last week, amazing Lil boogers for the price. I run the Holmes BRXL also, personally I lean towards it. If one didn't lift the body they would never know the difference lol.
Really great quality unit. I got one for my TRX4 Sport that my son and I are building. I do wish the wire to the receiver was an inch or two longer. I ended up getting it to reach though. My Scorpion re-release may be getting switched to a brushed motor as the brushless is too fast. I may get the lower end Hobby Wing ESC for that one

Holmes talks smack about this esc because you cannot tune the throttle curve. I think someone's jelly a 40 dollar esc can win comps! Don't get me wrong the high dollar escs are amazing in every way but this is 40 dollars with performance and tuning options many times above its pay grade.

This looks like a great esc. I’ve seen a couple other guys review/use it in the last few weeks, and it looks like a great esc. When I get the TRX4 Sport Kit this is going in it right away. I think I’ll do this esc, the Traxxas Titan motor, and maybe a Savox servo. I haven’t quite decided on the servo, I want something reliable, strong, but not overly expensive. ($75 or less preferably)

or if you want more power step up to its Bigger Brother for (69.99) The EcoPower WP120T Coreless Waterproof "High Torque" Metal Gear Digital Servo is a great choice if you are looking for an affordable, waterproof, high voltage upgrade. The WP120T makes 337 oz-in of torque and .11 transit speed at 6.0V. But when you crank the voltage up to 7.4V, the WP120T delivers 400 oz-in and .09 speed, making it an excellent option for scale crawlers, 1/10-1/8 monster trucks, 1/10 2WD and 4WD buggies, as well as 1/8 scale buggies and trucks. Question, say for example I had a dual esc setup, wire both my ESCs through a y harness and I lift the red wire out of one of them. If i chose to switch off the master esc (the one that still has it's red wire) what will happen to the slave? (the esc that doesn't have it's red wire) Will the slave work perfectly on it's own? Master powers two motors and the slave powers one, both escs Are operating from the same battery

Hi there, great video. Can I please check whether I can use this Hobbywing 1080 ESC on the 7.4V setting with the TRX4 chassis kit noting that the little servos on the chassis kit can only run at 6V max? I'm tossing up whether to upgrade to this Hobbywing ESC, or just go with the stock ESC with the 2262 BEC to power the 2255 servo. My thinking is that I can never get to use the 7.4V setting to give the 2255 servo more power due to the limitations of the little servos. Would appreciate your thoughts?
On the Traxxas trx-4 will changing to 7.4 volts Bec power the small servos as well with 7.4 ? Don't want to burn those

Silly question. Bought this on your recommend for my trx Bronco. It seems stronger and definitely more control. I have 7.5v 25kg steering servo but was wondering if bumping BEC to the 7+ volts would fry the two receiver and the mini servos? If this is the case, I was thinking of running a 5v or 6v BEC to receiver, linked to signal wire from esc then sending the esc servo lead, plus and minus to supply the 7+ volts to servo and just servo signal wire to receiver?
