That steering wheel really brings back memories of that 'standard' British Leyland design that was in a couple of the cars that my Dad owned during the 70s - from the 1300, Allegro, to the Maxi...! :-)
I will be using this kit to build an Australian Perentie 110. Just need to find different wheels and tyres. The rest should be a reasonably easy modification. Great review Nigel. Thanks.

How did you go with the Perentie mate?
Another nice looking kit and as usual an informative review Nigel. Will look forward to seeing the shortened version built on video. I haven’t done a channel and chop job since I built AMT hot rods when I was a kid. Thanks again.
Would love to see this when it’s finished!! Just ordered this kit & would like to see what a finished one looks like! Great detailed review
Hope you do build it Nige, that conversion will be really interesting as a project. Thanks for the review.

A buddy of mine was a "gunner" on one for a little while. He was a ranger at Ft Lewis, Washington(state), lots of maintenance issues with them, but he lived crewing them.
Nigel...Thanks for the review. It would be interesting to see your conversion to a short wheel base vehicle.
Interesting review and very timely with Revell's Series III LWB due on the shelves this week. Quick comments - decal 3 is simply a reproduction chassis plate. The plastic production grille is correct for a Tdi fitted Landy (both 90 and 110). The one which is odd is the WMIK where the box top art shows the grill as an after-market alloy V8 grille which was also used in polished alloy form on the factory-built celebration limited editions in the production run down. Most Wolfs I am aware of had standard LR plastic grilles. Bonnets could be steel as well carrying a spare wheel but those generally had sliding cab door windows and a canvas tilt.

I have to disagree on the grille issue Andy. A simple Google search will show many WMIK landies with the steel/ali grille. All Wolf/WMIK landies were Tdi engined. On the bonnet front.. I believe all pre Puma Landies had an aluminium skinned bonnet.

@@NigelsModellingBench have to say I've only seen Wolf/WMIK with a standard plastic grille, maybe those were the odd ones. As for 90/110, the early releases from MOD (B or C plate on re-reg) certainly had bonnet mounted spare wheels and non-turbo traditional LR diesels. No doubt the spec changed several times during the 80s. Can only comment on those I've actually seen in the tin.

Andy Richards ok, I see where your coming from now. The bonnets on early 90’s were aluminium, which is strong enough for the spare. I believe WMIK and Wolf landers has fibreglass bonnets. My Puma bonnet is steel unfortunately.
That looks like a great kit

Nigel’s Modelling Bench awesome
I have the hardtop version. I plan on getting the resin TANGI conversion kit from Accurate Armor and making a RUC Northern Ireland version.

RW Hobbies that’ll be a pretty looking model.
If the chip in your Defender's windscreen is in the driver's side of the screen it can be no bigger than a 5p, elsewhere on the screen it's up to roughly a 10p to pass the MOT. That being said it's a very easy screen to replace as it's a 'String in' rather than bonded. I was a windscreen fitter once.

Thanks James. It has been there for a couple of years now but is strating to turn white and spread. It is on the drivers side, right in front of my nose!! I have fitted and removed a few screens in my time, bonded and rubber.. much prefer the rubber to be honest.. just so long as I don't pull the seal only to find rust under it!!
A petrolhead who hasn’t taken his Land Rover off road?? 🤥
Where do I start 🤔 5th royal inniskilling Dragoon Guards D SQN 11A .the call sign on this is 11a A sqn dont know what regiment . In Canada the spare was on the bonnet ........ omg I could go on . I'm about to make this same model like my old lany if anyone is interested ?
Hi Nigel can you model it with the doors open?

@@steveclarke6257 it's not mate. I really need to decide whether to get a new crank or get mine refurbished? The thread on the nose is buggered due to someone using the wrong nut on the pulley.

I'm guessing a replacement may be difficult for 70+ YO vehicle
Never been off-road? You must be a masochist, 5 miles in my brother's Defender is more than enough, especially with the side facing rear seats. You have given me some ideas for his Christmas present though!

I have big mud tyres on mine too, and a few times I've driven it on 200 mile round trips.
Biggest problem with WMIK and RSOV are the gun mount frame works sit too high up; WMIK gun mount also not açcurate for beginning of Iraq invasion. RSOV also has inaccurate seats; only demonstrator had lumbar seats.

@@NigelsModellingBench you actually need the vent shrouds on both wing/fender sides. Those antenna mounts on the tops of the wings are also terribly incorrect. WMIK version has rear Gunner seat on wrong side, should be on left-- behind front Gunner/commander. Personally, I've never seen RSOV with spare on the bonnet/hood; usually in cargo bed under Gunner; have seen covered coils of barbed wire on hood. Ambulance version of RSOV have spare on front in front of grill. Markings for camo hardtop actually for a 110, not a Wolf version. Also, have seen technical drawings that indicates there is actually a seam on longitudinal chassis frames. Another conversion with the hardtop is an improvised patrol vehicle used in Kosovo and early Iraq. Remove hard top but leave framework. Some versions had doors and windshield removed, some just doors, some just windshield but kept doors, some had improvised GPMG mount and wire cutting device welded to front bulkhead... If you look at the "New Items" sheet included with the Hardtop kit, you'll actually see an example; not really spelled out in the instructions. I tried making a short wheelbase Srs III of the old Italerei/Revell kit using Bob Morrison's instructions in a 1989 issue of Tamiya magazine...notice I said tried! May try it again though!
