I paint 28mm Historical (i can hear you yawn); i have been painting since i was a kid, but back in the 80s we would never have dreamed about using Artist techniques on our figures. i had absolutely no clue how to Glaze; and now thanks to you, i have alot more confidence and can see the possilbilities on my figures and horses. Probably the best explanation of glazing i've seen, I'm not sure when I read online with people glazing if I didn't see the 'whipe extra onto paper towel' I always just put it on, seemed way to watery always and ended up stop doing it.

It really is the secret most people never say but is absolutely essential.

I love how you combine your tutorials on a given topic with other techniques. It might be obvious to an experienced painter, but to me it was really mind blowing that tip on the end to glaze over the unwanted "dirt" you get when dry brushing... Also when you apply really thick highlights of white and tone it down with the original glaze... Just thank you so much

Amazing video Vince! When I asked GW about this it was unclear to me and just seemed to be when you did it in the paint process. You've done alot to clear this up for me.

GW's Reply: It's all down to how you want the shade to interact with the colours. Usually, it will be after a basecoat to add shading to a model before the highlights are applied. Other times, we do it last, as we want to the entire miniature to have the hue offered by the wash. Eg - putting a yellow wash on after a bone basecoat and a white highlight. We also sometimes use washes as a glaze - that means mixing it with medium, so when applied, the shade is thin enough to simply add colour to the final hue and help blend the highlights together. This lets you add quite harsh highlights and the final glaze brings them together. This works especially well on something like a cloak. eg: 1. Basecoat Mephiston Red 2. Highlight Evil Suns Scarlet 3. Highlight Trollslayer Orange 4. Glaze with Carroburg Crimson mix with Medium. Hope that helps!

I have to say, this is the best. clearest and overall most thorough explanation of how to glaze. In a word: perfect.

I’ve recently tried this to dull down a yellow robe that was painted way to bright. It took a bit of time but by using a yellow glaze and a brown glaze my result has turned out much better than I thought it would with nice transitions through the folds. This has been a super useful tutorial and I love watching this series to learn and to get inspiration. Many, many thanks for producing these!

@@VinceVenturella - I don't leave comments at each and every tutorial of yours, but I watch loads of them and they help me. My problem with glazing is that I don't know how light my glaze has to be to get the nice blend - too little difference with the base colour and you don't see any difference, too much difference & you might as well use regular paint. This blending in lighter/darker colour when the glaze is still wet and then smoothing it down is an eye opener. Can't wait to try it out.

I love your videos. This tutorial, however, is absolutely brilliant. A real masterclass. Thank you for sharing your technique in such a didacticall way.

I started painting back in the mid 80's on models like these. I took it all the way till about 1993 until I took a break and came back around 1995-1998 and then took another break from painting. I have been doing it wrong all this time. Early in those years we didn't have internet. To learn this kind of stuff you would really need art school. Mid 90's we had internet but nothing like this unless you paid for the classes. Now with the information age in full swing I am glad I got back into painting models. All this great information! I have been spending the past few weeks just watching and learning from your video collection. There is going to be no other way I will get any better now than getting paint on my models. I just want to thank you again for this well spring of knowledge! I bought about 500$ in new models. But before I even touch them I am going to re paint all my older models. The best way to get better is by getting paint on models and experience. However I can say I have jumped leaps and bounds by watching and learning. Now is the time for the practical experience here that I can only get from painting. Thanks again! You have offered the world something most of us would only get via art school and paying out some big money for the knowledge.

Well this has been very timely. I've been trying to paint some skeletons with glazing and learning how colours closer to white are a lot more difficult to glaze makes a lot of sense. I've been using glazing medium and everything! Thanks for the video.

That's awesome, it's one of those steps that people don't often mention and it's just so important. :)

I thought that brown/red hue would really fuck with the skin tone you had, but god damn, it actually brought the skin to life. I love those moments where you intuitively think something isn't going to work but then you try it and it looks amazing. That's where you really learn the most.

Hey Vince. I got into miniature painting as a hobby and I just wanted to say thank you. You could probably put all this stuff behind a paywall and make people pay through the nose to get hours of excellent high quality tutorials. These tutorials are specific and really help me to understand these techniques that I've heard about but couldn't execute. You've given me the confidence to actually do stuff like feathering and wet blending and I'm just really glad that you're doing this. Thank you!

This technique really works. I tried glazing a few weeks ago, and I'm really happy with what I ended up with. Painting a red pair of trousers, I started with a deep rusty red, then glazed up through lighter flesh tones over the quads and folds of fabric around the groin and backs of knees. I then went over this all with a mid red, and the highlighted areas looked amazing. To add more contrast, I mixed some dark ink into my rust colour, and glazed in the shadows.

Excellent, glaze painting really is a wonderful option and something I use so often, you can achieve such wonderful results and transitions with it.

This is the single best thing I've seen on glazing. I am going to try doing glazing over zenithal highlighted areas; it looks to give it a dark and luscious kind of Rembrandt glow.

So you don't actually start with a medium range base count followed by washes and highlights? You just kind of work up the glaze to darker and darker shading from a zenithal highlight?

I've watched ~5 glazing vids the past 2 h and this is by far my favorite.

Great video: Great content. Great explanation. Thank you so much! But also technically very enjoyable: Good video resolution, good sound, no music. Good choice of a large mini to see the technique better. The only thing to increase the technical aspect would be another frontal lamp as the mini had quite a few lamp shadows instead of painted shadows.

You could use a mirror and have the light reflected from a lamp pointed at it.

This is great. I'm thinking of using some parts of this on my current projects.

I can't believe it took me this long to learn why the hell rich, dark colors like my Warcolours Violet 4 & 5 aren't completely opaque, whereas lighter tints are. That always seemed bass-ackward to me, but now it makes a lot of sense. Thank you Vince!

One again Vince, you knock it out the park. I have been playing about with glazes but I don't get much of a chance with skin tones (not a whole lotta that visible on Space Marines!) But low and behold last Monday I picked up the Necromunda Underhive box set and started on the Goliath gang first. These guys have more muscles than Arnie on an anabolic steroid binge and give me the chance to work on some skin tones. Perfectly timed my good man and yet another superb lesson on the joy of painting. Can't thank you enough. If I may make a suggestion for a possible future episode. I would like to learn about Light and Shade and how this affects highlights on our miniatures. I have had a look around the interwebs and found some interesting articles however these are mainly referring to 2D paintings or drawings and are of specific shapes. Its left me with lots of questions and I would love to see your take on the subject. Again many thanks.

That would be awesome, even touching on more basics, shapes etc would be extremely helpful, the sphere, plane, cylinder and how one goes about combining these and applying upon our miniatures. Like I said Vince, I've looked into the subject but when I attempt to add the respective highlights there is something off (and it's not my socks!) I think an explanation and demo from you would be very helpful indeed. Thanks.

The first video on KZread that made me GET glazing. I can't wait to go paint my Conan dude with this technique.
