Hobart Welder Generator Champ 140 resurrected

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

On it's last leg, abandoned, orphaned and not loved.... Until now!
Welder generators are not common in the DIY world but here are a few you can buy new:
7hp 2200 watts w/120A Stick : amzn.to/3Byhg8A
15hp 2000watt w/210A stick and tig features: amzn.to/3B6DXiD
HOBART 145(newer model of video welder): store.cyberweld.com/hoch145we...
Honda powered 1500watt w/135A stick: amzn.to/3RA4WdG
note: I have not used any of these personally. They are pricey but there are a few cheaper options, read below.
Thoughts:
I've owned a few welder generators over the years and this is my second compact portable one. I'm really impressed by their welding ability and being portable is a huge plus. This Hobart 140(built 1994) is a capable machine and you could easily tackle some 1/4" or thicker steel. The last one I owned was a Honda unit; EW171 and that was impressive as well. They look like a Honda construction generator but put out 4k watts and 170A DC welding. They typically sell for dirt cheap used(a few hundred bucks) and are well worth it. They also came a little small in the EW140 and older EW170. If you find one, buy it.
NON DETERGENT OIL CLARIFICATION
If your engine doesn't have an oil filter you should use non detergent. "Detergent" simply suspends all the bad crap for an oil filter to remove. No oil filter and you're just pushing all the bad crap through your engine, bearings, cam lobes, etc over and over. Non detergent allows all this bad crap to fall to the bottom, out of the way and only clean oil is recirculated.
Before oil filters became standard in a car engine(1950's) detergent oil wasn't a thing. you wanted all the carbon, metal flakes, water, dirt to fall to the oil pan to be drained out with oil changes. Detergent (soap) simply bonds to bad crap and the oil filter grabs it.

We have used the kzread.infoUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

Those old electric, dual blade, meat carving knives that you always see in the thrift stores work really great for cutting foam, fiberglass insulation and Styrofoam accurately and neatly. Mine looks like it was made in the 70's, it does exceptional work and it's come in handy several times. Nice work refreshing that old unit!

Love the welder and fix. Love the Dog. Love the Fresca. Love the bit about the oil. IMO multi-grade oil is crap and a scam, had a Crown Vic w/ over 450K on the original motor (115K when I bought it), ran the hell out of it constantly (100+ mph w/ the a/c on) and never ran anything but straight 40w of no particular brand, changed maybe every 5 - 10K. Pretty sure I'll get over the 6 extra miles of fuel mileage that practice cost me; rest of the car finally wore out but the motor still ran great and the a/c blew cold.

Nice job overall. Some people have better luck with Briggs engines than I do as the only one I ever had was on a Husqvarna made Craftsman snow blower that wasn't disappointing, only the carburetor was one of those Nikki things, kind of a pain to work on. I have a 25 year old Vanguard V-Twin on a Cub Cadet Series 2000 that has been a thorn in my side for quite a while. More recently I had to get an air filter for it and thought a filter for a Kohler Command Pro would work since they were similar dimensions. It was too tall so I modified the mounting bracket to just accept it. Basically I just replaced the threaded stud on the bracket with a 1/4-20x1.5" carriage bolt, locking washer, nut, fender washer and wing nut and it made it so I didn't have to special order it.

Jack’s Small Engine for air filter housing? McMasters-Carr may have the generic motor mounts. It’s a good machine to have around the shop. All the best sir!

.047 uF is a really common size and it's usually marked as 473. Capacitors of this size to ground couple high frequency A/C noise and short it out.

This guy, the renaissance man says in order for the foam to cut beautifully like butter you have to have a razor sharp knife and then he pauses just long enough to think and then to say: “which I always do” had me rolling lol

About 35 years ago I almost had an multi-fuel engine driven rolling AC/DC welder/generator for $100. I don't remember the make, but it was big and blue and rolling on four 8" pneumatic tires. An elderly gentleman was selling off his mechanics tools, of which I bought quite a few items, including a five foot long three and a half ton floor jack for $20. Then he rolled out this generator and said he wanted $100 for it. I said great, but now I have to go to my bank. When I got back with the cash, apparently his son had dropped by and told the old feller that he wanted it, and not to sell it. So missed out. Can't blame the son though, I would of done the same thing in his place. Super disappointing!
