Hoarders ❤️ Minimal Mom | Massive Clothes Declutter | Clutter Free January

When Dawn the Minimal Mom asked me to join her in her January series of decluttering and organizing, I jumped up with excitement! This week we were tackling clothes and I knew in my heart that I could Declutter a lot more than my previous KonMari Method videos! I also explain how I have to Declutter as a recover hoarder! We must make emotional decisions to let go of things because it is an emotional attachment. Logical decision making does not work with emotional issues. By doing that over & over, we have strengthen our decluttering muscles to let go of bigger piles of clothes!

I dread going through my stuff more than anything on earth. And I desperately need to do it. I’ve never, ever had a house that wasn’t dysfunctional and cluttered...let alone a nice comfy space that was actually decorated and I wasn’t too embarrassed to have guests. I’ll be 50 next year and I want to not hate my house for the first time in my life. I have hoarding tendencies and I barely manage to keep my stuff from overtaking the house. I’m pretty sure I have adult ADD or at least focus issues, and that doesn’t help. I can’t wait to watch all your videos, I feel like it will help me to finally get started! Thank you

Pulling out your winter clothes in January? Ha, you're a woman after my own heart! I used to live in MI and struggle with item overload and I would do that too. Then I was always sad that I couldn't wear them for that long, as I was emotionally attached to them. I grew up with a mom who ended up being an actual hoarder. Our house was always a mess growing up. I watch the Minimal Mom and you all the time. Between seeing Dawn's clear surfaces all the time and you explaining my thought process - to me!! - I'm finally making progress in my home after many decades on this earth. Dawn said something recently that was very powerful for me. She asked, "Do you want options or do you want freedom?" I walked right over to my coat closet pulled out 2 coats to donate. And you've taught me to start with what's easy to let go. Thanks for making a channel and sharing.

I have a feeling you’re going to help a huge amount of people with this video. It did take me 2 days to click on this video as I’d been glancing at the thumbnail photo and thinking “that’s a ridiculous amount of clothes” THEN saw your channel name and knew there was a lot more to the photo. I’m immensely proud of your progress, and the fact that you shared your skills in HOW you declutter the pile, going easier on the items with more attachment so as to avoid triggering your hoarding tendencies. That strategy may go a long way to help others with their own struggles. I also appreciated that when returning items to bins, they were placed back in neatly and labeled. You’re now creating better systems going forward and your channel is showing others that the same can be done in their home. It IS doable and not as overwhelming as we think it can be - IF we can get into the right headspace. You’re going to help others do that. I’ve been watching Dawn from The Minimal Mom, Cass from Clutterbug & Sarah from Small Changes (Australia) for a long time now and these ladies have really helped me with motivation and strategies to get things done. Originally I did a 30 day house challenge but I think that might not be enough time for someone with hoarding tendencies to mentally get through their space. That’s why your channel may be a much better option. 🙏🏼☀️😊

You really had quite a project and the fact that you went through all of that and shared it publicly is really impressive. I'm sure your channel is helping so many others with hoarding disorder, you should be very proud of yourself! I appreciate your explanation that it is an emotional attachment and so the decision needs to be made from the heart. I really liked how you kept emphasizing "my heart says it's ok to let this go." That is absolutely awesome. I went through a traumatic change in my life where I got out of the military and then had to leave my abusive husband with nothing but what me and my 2 kids were wearing and your right people gave me clothes left and right and I ended up filling a bedroom full of clothes for me and my kids and when I moved into my own home it was hard to let go because it reminded me of all that I had made it through and I was also afraid of never getting more clothes. It was crazy but when I let things go I felt more free. Now I have a 1 in and 1 out system that I follow and my kids when they get things that are to big they go in a bin for them to wear when they can fit in them and I only buy a couple new things a year for them just so they know how it feels to have new things as well as accepting hand me downs. It took me 5 years to get to this point but I'm so glad I did and soooooooo proud of the progress you have made

I'm soooo proud of you!!! This video ~ and the one today on paper clutter (which is my first time coming across your channel!) ~ are very inspirational to me! I do not have hoarding disorder, but have *always* struggled with feeling I needed to keep my footprint small, in any living situation I've ever been in. So... it's like I've had a foot in both worlds ~ wanting to keep my memorabilia & books & special clothing (& some of my Mama's, who has gone to Heaven) & craft supplies (a definite "heartstrings attached" pile!!) & yet feeling I had to downsize, downsize, downsize & keep myself small! I've gotten rid of many things over the years, some which I still remember and wish I still had! Your videos ~ the ones I've viewed so far ~ have taught me that I'm okay! It's okay to hold onto things I'm not ready to get rid of. *And* I need to decide EMOTIONALLY rather than cognitively. I *love* that! Thank you so very much for being so open with us with your truth! I look forward to seeing more of your videos! P.S. I adore how kind you were being to yourself, talking kindly to yourself, and giving yourself permission to let go, or to hold onto, if even just a little longer! This is such an amazing concept!

A “no buying clothes” challenge for 2021 sounds awesome actually! I think i might do it, but let myself take the clothing for fixing if needed and buy a replacement if and only if it is needed. You have done such awesome work! I have been following you for a long while now, and omg wow! Your progress is amazing! 💜💜💜

Good job!!! Amazing!!! I agree. The more you do it. The easier it gets. It is like taking off shackles for each item that no longer has a hold. Lets be free to buy and to give away, to have nothing and to have a lot and not give any of it an extra thought. Free hearts ready to love.

You can be so incredibly proud of yourself! I'm binging all your videos right now and you've really made incredible progress! I'm more of a minimalist, but maybe my advice will help you anyway, if it's not suitable for a hoarder, just forget it: Try to imagine how all those t-shirts feel when they're just lying in the basement. It's like they're in a coma. They can neither bring joy and benefit to someone else, nor can they "die". If you don't want to lose the memory, you could take a photo of each piece and create a photo album, maybe even with a little text for each memory.

That was an amazing declutter! I am so proud of how far you’ve come! I love seeing videos when you go through previously decluttered items after time has passed and declutter again! I love to see how much your viewpoint has changed since the last clothing declutter! I think continually reassessing your sentimentals is the perfect sustainable way for you to reach your idea of minimalism!

Well done. But remember to remove the donation quickly. Maybe you should try the hanger trick. Hang with the hanger placed backwards. Once it’s worn hang normally. End of season what’s still backwards gets donated. It really makes the decision easy.

Currently in my third period of Life with too much, and I've been slowly trying to be comfortable emotionally getting rid of things that I'm fine with saying bye to. Glad you said that it's emotional rather than logical. I've got a dress collection I can't let go of, and it's ok for now :) In the meantime, I've been collecting things slowly to donate.

Also.....I have to have arguments with my clothes and other things that I have a sentimental or emotional attachment to, that in reality, should go. I have literally sat and talked to an item and and told it that the love I have for it, the security that I feel it gives me, or the happiness that it still brings me is NOT making me better by keeping it. No matter how much I feel that I “need” it. I tell it every feeling and emotion that it evokes in me, then I tell it that I am trying really hard to heal, and to please leave me with its memories and a sense of peace. I tell it that the space that it is taking up physically in my home, and emotionally every time I try to struggle with it, is that much more space and time that I can free up to live IN THE MOMENT WITH MY CHILDREN AND FAMILY. Then I think of something fun or new that I can do with my kids, family or friends, and tell the item that I love it, but now it is leaving, and will be replaced by something that REALLY matters. Finally.... I have to tell each thing that the memories or whatever it is that keeps me from letting it go, is NOT going to control my emotions anymore. I am controlling the item, and it’s not worth the real estate that it is taking up in my home, my mind, and my healing. If I let go of something hard, and later wish that I had it back, I just look at the space it “gifted” me by leaving, and go hug my children. You can and will get thru this. DO NOT LET YOUR THINGS CONTROL YOU. YOUR SAFETY AND SECURITY AND HAPPINESS IS NOT IN A THING. This was so hard for me to learn, but it gets easier with every item that you “talk” to and find closure with. I promise.

I just want to say thank you. My bf is a hoarder and im more of a minimalist. I have never forced him to get rid of anything but I ask him to go through everything once in a while. Make bins for the stuff you keep for sentimental reasons. Keep them seperated from the stuff you keep because it fits and you wear it. Make sure you take the time to beautifully fresent even the nonfitting pieces you still love. Even when you pack them in bins make sure to use separate shoeboxes and the folding methods so you can see the things in one cathegory all at the same time.

I know you hear this a lot, but you're doing an AMAZING job! For the nostalgic t-shirts (love the Saved by the Bell one, btw!) I've begun the prep work for making ours into t-shirt quilts. There'll be one for each of my kids, me and my husband. I figure that they'll be a useful memory piece, better than sitting in a box somewhere. And if we don't want them on the bed forever, at least they'll be sewn together in one piece rather than a pile of 30 shirts hanging around.
