HMS Queen Elizabeth - The Future of the Royal Navy

This powerful video demonstrates the capabilities and effectiveness of the new Queen Elizabeth class carriers demonstrating, via amazing CGI, the workings of the carriers and the F35 Fighters.
The First Sea Lord talks about the incredible journey that the construction and original concept of the carriers has taken and what the carriers mean to the future of the Royal Navy.
The British Army and the RAF also talk about what carriers mean to them and the important role they will play in the future of defence.
These highly advanced ships will have a huge variety of roles that she will be able to perform when the first ship launches and the amazing technology that has been built into them to put them at the fore-front of the Fleet. They really will be the Jewel in the Crown of the Royal Navy.
This stunning video was show to her Majesty the Queen and other guests at the amazing naming ceremony on the 4th July.
You can find further information about the new carriers on our website: www.royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and-...

Pump it up to 3% of GDP($71 billion). Currently, we're spending 1.8% of GDP($47.2 billion) whereas the French are spending 2.3% of GDP($57.8 billion). I know 3% is a perhaps a bit optimistic but 2.5% of GDP($60 billion) is not impossible if we make it a priority. We spend £13 billion in foreign aid, this could be slashed to £3 billion and we could use it on the military.

Not quite yet, but in a few years when we're operating F-35s from these ships the RN will have at least 2.5-3 times the raw capability in terms of bomb payload at range. And that's ignoring the improvements in speed, altitude, maneuverability, stealth, sensors and countermeasures of the F-35 over the old Harriers and Sea Harriers. It would have been nice if they were conventional cat & trap carriers, but even with STOVL they're a real step forward in capability over what we've had since the 70s.

Britannia Rule The Waves: A saying not just confined to history This 21st-century Aircraft Carrier, combined with the Astute-class subs, the Daring-class destroyers and the future Type 26 Frigates will mean the Royal Navy will continue to pack a punch far above its size There's a reason why, despite Turkey being the 2nd-largest force in NATO, the Americans always prefer to work with us It's not just about how many ships you have, it's about how effective each ship is

Its never been a problem of technology or ability. The Royal Navy consistently has some of the best Naval technology or training. Your problem is that you only have 6 Daring class destroyers, not the planned 12. You have only a planned 12 Type 26 Frigates. You need far more destroyers, frigates, escort, and support ships to maintain the Royal Navy as a premier force. To operate both of these carriers at the same time would take of 25 percent of the Royal Navy's combat ship force, not to mention the support ships required. This would leave a massive hole in your defenses. I would say you need at least 10 more Darings, and I would wager some more Type 26s as well to operate one carrier and still maintain an efficient Naval defense of the British Isles. To be honest, the Royal Navy is the UKs most important fighting force, along with the RAF. You are a maritime nation, and with your position in the world you need a strong a powerful navy that is not only powerful enough to protect your territory but gives you the ability to project power. Hopefully Westminster wakes up to that, because it doesnt look good.

Alex Leknes I couldn't help but notice that it was the American Apache, Chinook and F35 that were the main aircraft for the Carrier. I realise that a substantial part of them are British varients or collaberated with in with regards to the F35, but I'm a bit worried that we are too dependent on one foreighn partner for comfort. Why didn't we work to make a next generation Harrier instead of dependent on the Pentagon which is even thinking about abandoning the varient we need to make the Carrier desighns work? Are we going to have to consider the Nalavised French Rafale?

As an American, am happy to see the Royal Navy making a much needed comeback. As an Island nation, you can’t afford to neglect the Navy. I understand it’s not cheap but you can’t put a price on defending the Nation. The world is becoming more and more unstable and defense spending, and I mean smart use of funds, is vital to national security. The new Carriers are going to give the RN immense capability, but you also need Destroyers and even a few guided missile cruisers to make the RN second only to the US Navy. Then let’s see if the Russian and the Chinese dare to mess with the UK.

It has been said that each new carrier will have an operational life of 50 years. My knowledge of Royal Navy ships is that a life of 20-25 years is the maximum, and even that is pushing it with certain types of vessels. There is a point in a ship's life when it is no longer economically viable to keep re-fitting it. Sell it or scrap it, and build a new one.

The F-35B will be a real game changer. All participant countries will have more than enough spare parts and planes to go around across the entire globe from the UK to Japan - more than 3000 of these buggers. Now imagine the countries that carry the F-35 and interoperate on each other's ships. That effectively increases force numbers and projection during a war.

Not an expert either, but I have listened to experts on the subject. They claim (and I believe them) that military equipment is hardened against EMP by putting the electronics inside some sort of Faraday cages. They regarded EMP as being of no concern against military equipment, the civil infrastructure I'm not so sure about though.

The ship(s) really would have been formidable had they installed the cat and cap system they were originally supposed to have in order to be able to launch a whole range of aircraft. As it is it is designed for only SToVL aircraft like the obsolete Harrier, helicopters, and the yet to be produced SToVL version of the F35. Last I heard the plan was for a compliment of only 10 - 12 aircraft per carrier... not exactly impressive. It is really nothing more than a light amphibious carrier with limited firepower which is a shame because it really could have been a super carrier in every sense of the word until the politicians started stealing money away from the project.

12 jets and three helocopters is a minimum in peace time deployments and at full manned she can have 50 aircraft. And the merlins can be early warning platforms with Atleast one in the air constantly so no need for early warning planes, and those jets are fighter bombers so cover two roles and they can be refueled in air like almost all jets do nowadays so the fact the catapult can launch heavier loaded aircraft isn't that important, also fighter jets these days don't cluster bomb, they precision bomb and most of the time only drop one missile. So the space taken up with the f35bs hover engine isn't important either, the f35s can also have missiles mounted on the wings and internally. The stealth being compromised with external missile mounts isn't important because there's not likely gona be a war with two advanced militarys. Just fighting guys in jeeps with guns. So I Can see these ships and jets being very effective and powerful second only to USA. And there th best britains ever had, so stop moaning and be thankful we have a strong modern millitary spending 170 billion on new tech and equipment. Britain is still one of the best at doing great with what they have, if not the best. Be grateful

Daniel Chirino - You are forgetting the French aircraft the Argentins had, armd with Exocet antiship missiles. At the time, the Royal Navy had no effective defenses for these. They also did not have the capability to establish total air superiority around the islands which could keep hostile aircraft a safe distance away.

  • @RMB4444

I think that if the RAF are involved in naval aviation, they will take it more seriously. The most succeful jet fighter in recent years was the Sea Harrier, operated by the Royal Navy, who engaged and destroyed Mirage, Skyhawk, Super Etendard, Pucarra and Hercules aircraft of the Argentine Navy and Airforce without loss. The RAF managed to embark ground attack Harriers with the Task Force and managed to drop one bomb from a Vulcan aircraft after a 7000 mile round trip involving eleven tanker refuels. It was more of a gesture than a cost effective and successful mission. Curious that the Harriers were all scrapped along with their carriers in order to kee old Tornadoes operational whilst the new Typhoons have yet to be used on operations. I suspect that inter-service rivalry once again came to the fore - come on chaps, we are supposed to work together for the common good!

I just like giving you guys a hard time because it seems like you can't get an aircraft off the deck without a little ramp. Of course I also understand Eddie the Eagle style jumps don't break down. The point is you do not have any aircraft other than Vstol that you can launch from a CV. For 30 years that Harrier was outmatched in air to air against F-14 Tomcats or F-18 Hornets. But that's OK now you fly the F-35 Lightning 2. Made by? That's right the United States of America. Welcome to 2nd place as an also ran. Your position since 1776!

steven wright . Hi, I can’t comment on the ski jump, but yes your right that the Harrier was slow compared to a lot of aircraft, maybe that why America bought some, so that they could improve on it and make the f35. By the way the f35 is not the only plane’s on our carrier’s. All the best and stay safe.

It would be a bit awkward if the automatic ammunition handling system broke down during a major operation and they end up having to shift ammunition the old fashioned way, but without the manpower to do it properly.

And it doesn't matter about what it was designed to operate the can take off in the same space as a merlin helicopter (which was shown to be used in the video) and is smaller than the F35 Raptor. And ive seen both of them at the Royal air force museum Hendon in close proximity.

Because the Marine corps operate the harrier does not mean that it is not obsolete..it clearly is. The carrier design for only VSTOL is a bad compromise as it cannot cross deck with other French or American carrier aircraft which are clearly more capable than the F35 which in itself is a compromise because of the need for VSTOL. We have created a 2nd. rate assest because of Government penny pinching which has always been the case with defence procurement.
