HM160: Hornby Princess with Sound and Smoke

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In the latest issue of Hornby Magazine we show how to install digital sound, 'stay alive', working lamps and a smoke generator into Hornby's new 2020 version of the Stanier 'Princess Royal' in 'OO' gauge as part of our Hornby Centenary special issue. Watch the finished model in action here.

The smoke really brings the loco to life the only thing I wish could be done like the Dapol black label locos is the smoke to puff in time with the chuff chuff sounds.

50 years ago I had a Hornby with sound and smoke.. the sound was a plastic paddle on the tender wheel that rubbed against some sandpaper thing attached to a plastic "sound box" and the smoke was just oil on a pad that was heated by some wire. The thing was that a small piston driven from the front driving wheel caused the smoke to puff out of the chimney like a real steam engine and was proportional to the speed the loco was running

Mike; just a pointer on pronunciation. SEUTHE is pronounced “SOYTER”. As luck has it I was sat with a German gent on holiday and asked him the question. Obviously a fabulous video again. I did write to Hornby and asked them to alert the design team to making provision for smoke generators under the chimney. I think they have taken this idea on board. (I had to drill through the block for my K1s - Not for the faint hearted!!) I never heard back regarding the Buffer Stops btw. Best wishes, as ever, Rob.

i'm still amazed by how you Brits create these BEAUTFUL layouts but let the manufacturers get away with being so lazy in 1/76 whereas we on the continent ask wayyyy mnore from our 1/87 manufacturers and get better results... This is a nice looking loco, but from what i've seen an average 1990's Fleischmann loco is more detailed than comparable loco's from Hornby/triang while 1/76 is considerably bigger than 1/87. having said so, the sound does have a good bass to it.

There isn't really much more detail to go on. British (and Irish at that) locomotives are remarkably neat on the exterior, with next to nothing besides reverser and handrails

Agreed. The coaches are not even close coupled, which has been standard in HO for at least 20 years. OO came into being because in the 1930s Hornby couldn't make electric motors small enough to fit HO scale locomotives. Hornby has been far behind Europe ever since.

This is brilliant. Going to need this issue as all the additions are things that I would love to add to my fleet at some point. Smoke in the locomotive is so awesome but I do wonder about the possibility of warping to the funnel plastic areas over time. What stunning locomotive. Clint

Very nice. I enjoy your videos in here in Canada. It would be a lot more realistic if you took advantage of the close coupling mechanism on the coaches. Six foot spacing very difficult for passengers.

Nice job guys. I don't like smoke generators myself, makes it toylike, but each to his own. One thing you missed though was that this is steam loco not a powered boxcar, where's the crew. You can run a powered boxcar by remote but not a steam loco.

The problem with using the Princess Coronation sound for the Princess Royal class is that the two are completely different. The Princess Coronations have double chimneys which gives the exhaust a wonderfully open sound. The Princess Royals have a single chimney which gives them a very harsh bark so much so that you can hear how much the exhaust is constricted. The Princess Coronations sound is very deep whereas the Princess Royals sound is very loud.

OMG I want That! A Question from a Canadian BR fan: Passenger coach #4 looks odd riding so high above her bogies, there is a sizable open space between the floor and the trucks side-frames. Why is that?

That smoke generator is a bit violent when starting with a snap, I recommend programming the fan to slowly switch on after a couple of seconds of starting up an to mimic how a real engine would start up

Can these Zimo chips do exhaust synchronisation on the steam sound? So you can have the right number of exhaust chuffs per wheel revolution.. This keeps the sound in scale with the speed, which can really helps drivers keep their speeds right because they sound right! I know you can do this on the Loksound chips with CV 57 & 58 (Manual Loksound V5 Section13.3 )

  • @trw1089

    @trw1089

    3 жыл бұрын

Parax77 yes, there is both a low speed and medium speed CV for setting the chuff synchronization to 4 chuffs per rev (or 6 for a 3cylinder). Zimo also have a good method for doing it live while the loco is running.

You’ve convinced me. I will never add a “smoke generator” to a model. It looks nothing like steam (water vapour) from a steam engine, and the constant buzz when it’s switched on is a real turn-off. And I don’t understand why customers are expected to breathe in the fumes/particulates created by the smoke generator. It can’t fail to be bad for your health.

There is only one thing worse than a smoke generator on a steam train, and that's a smoke generator on a diesel. Pointless, trashy gimmick. Also, for me the relative novelty of sound is losing it's appeal on the kettles. Until they can come up with some method of getting it in synch with the valve gear, rather like the smoke, it detracts from the realism. Rant over, off to lie down in a darkened room!
