I think the main problem with the HK45 design philosophy was they were going for a better 1911, and not a better USP, like they should have.

You need to understand that Larry Vickers and Ken Hackathorn didn’t like the HK 45 grips and the trigger guard. They complained that the trigger guard pinched their finger and they rejected it. HK went to their upper management for approval after they rejected it, and their upper management approved. Funny, sucking up to upper management is everywhere and trusting actual experienced individuals often goes out the window.

@clintwestwood1895 yes if they had kept a 12 round mag even if it had to stick out a little hk should of done it. I bought a hk45 when they first came out and I hated it. I have big hands and after being a usp owner since the 90's I couldn't get my self to like it. I do get pinched by them when pulling the trigger back and when it goes to reset. I'll stick with my usp45's

I'll never understand why HK didn't just embrace the USP as their flagship handgun. It's almost like they want to gaslight us into thinking the USP never existed, and it was the VP9 all along. Arguably, the only thing the USP ever needed to "modernize" was a 1913 rail, interchangeable backstraps, and maybe an optic cut. They got it right the first time and created the ultimate future-proof hammer pistol and it's like they're ashamed of it. The Glock and USP came out around the same time and despite both of them being universally beloved and vetted in extreme hard use, the USP has never escaped the 90s while the Glock is the golden standard with only minor changes throughout the decades to keep up with the times. You could argue the P2K is the "modern" USP but HK doesn't even like acknowledging that one exists either. They're all in on the VP9. Congrats HK, you built a firmly OK-tier striker.

This is coming from a company that prides itself on not selling too the poors but will to government agency or special operations units. They know what the USP is and what it can do but the thing is, the cost of making them especially with updated options would be much higher then the old ones. A usp45 tac with 1913 rail red dot cut and some better sights for the red dot would fetch for atleast the high 1k to 2k range. Hell just a old tac cost that much and finding one at this point is getting slim

@@FirearmFreedom On July first, FL will be another permit-less carry state. Thanks, in part, to our governor. For decades, Floridians have been carrying guns concealed, after getting a permit. Floridians with carry permits commit fewer crimes than those with no permit. I am thinking we may have been better off if we had left it like it was. After decades, it has proven to work well. We will see what happens. I know, if ONE person does something stupid, it will be all over the national news. Even if the overall results are great. The fact is, they want our guns for the same reasons Hitler took the Jews' guns. FDR was the first to go after our guns. He also refused to save any Jews. Read The Jews Should Keep Quiet. By Rafael Medoff. A great novel about freedom is John Grit's Feathers on the Wings of Love and Hate. Let the Gun Speak. All patriotic Americans should support both those authors. Can’t go wrong with either. I have big hands and the USP 45 still feels like a brick to me. I prefer the ergos of the HK45 and I don’t mind the reduced capacity as I’m mainly a 1911 shooter so losing two rounds vs the USP is still two rounds gained vs my 1911s. So I’ll take the HK45 but I certainly wouldn’t kick the USP out of bed.

The first gun that my hands ever felt at home on was a USP45. The double stacked Para’s felt good as well. And I know that this is a very personal thing but I’ve tried many firearms and my hands are very comfortable on my USP. I picked up a 2011 not too long ago. And I got that same feeling. I’ve been shooting a long time. The placement my hands get on both of these guns make me want to shoot them more and more. As always ymmv.

A few years ago I was considering getting the full size HK45 over the compact version because the grip reminds me of my VP9, but when I actually held the HK45CT V1 at a gun store I was surprised at how much I liked the straight compact grip so I got that instead. I fits my hands perfectly. A little less capacity but overall I love it. Got it for 650 at Cabelas. Came with raised sights, a threaded barrel and 3 10-round "hoof" mags, but I also have a flush 8 rd mag and a non threaded barrel I can swap out for comfortable conceal carry. I also picked up a 12 round mag from hkpartsnet store and I think now they might have larger mags like 13+, not sure. Haven't checked in a couple years. It hasn't malfunctioned once and I typically just shoot 230gr FMJ ammo out of it. If the USP45 was a little more affordable I might've chosen that instead at the time, but I was on a budget. I don't regret my purchase one bit though, in fact, if I could go back and do it again I would. I think I might even like it better than the full size and the USP, especially in its Mark24 mod0 configuration, it looks badass.

Been wanting to get my usp 45 compact milled to place a rds on. Trying to find a gunsmith that will do it, I know it's not the easiest and can cause damage to the slide that can cause it to no longer function properly. I've had my eye on a sheild RMSc. I'd want to attach it directly to the slide and not use a plate. Price is the biggest hold up cause with the rds price and the milling price your looking at upwards of 600 to 700 depending on the red dot that you go with. For that price, you could get a new firearm completely or even a surpressor for my usp. Would I rather a decked out usp or a new FN 509 or I could be halfway to getting a ptr91 that I've had on my bucket list of guns. The Decisions.....decisions.... Decisions.

Had a similar issue. I bought an HK45 late last year from a big chain store and I noticed that the mags were not coming out as smoothly as any of my other HK variants. I sold the gun and recently found a cool deal on an HK45 from Germany. The German HK45 mags fly out similar to the USP, they crank out. Seems like the store bought HK45 was getting caught at the mag well, due to it slightly being narrower. Wish I still had both to compare.

I originally had a Mark 23. It’s my holy grail range gun. I didn’t feel a need to get a USP45 after having a MK23. Then I got the HK45C for concealability. In the end I also ended up getting an HK45. I just really love the ergonomics and grip on it. It’s not as chunky as a USP45 and carries two more than a 1911. I feel it’s a good full size compromise. That you can also carry if you had too.

So it was in 2004-2005 when the army was looking into changing from the M9 to a .45. Everyone submitted a gun, Beretta PX4, M&P, Sig, Glock. HK made a new pistol because the USP grip would not fit most women's hands and that was part of the contract so HK reduced the grip. The HK45's grip is similar in size to a Glock 17. That's why.

It was made for delta force, they actually tried to make a hk 1911, with bushingless barrel, external extractor...but instead, they decided to make a "less blocky usp", with the rounded slide from the usp elite(to help with holstering), and less capacity to help with ergonomics. As far as I know it had nothing to do with the 2005 joint combat pistol originally.

Honestly the grip on the 45c and the P2000 is better than the "ergo" grip of the HK45. I wish HK would release the prototype version of HK45 that had the same grip as the 45C. I also think HK should've tried harder to fit the USP magazine into the HK45, instead of using a longer compact magazine body, which takes away 2 rounds. I also don't like that they used the Compact recoil buffer in the HK45 vs the real one in the USP.

  • @Peylix

Both are fantastic pistols. I personally choose the HK45. As someone who is/was primarily a 1911 stan. Capacity has never been an issue for me. If I wanted a 45acp pistol with capacity. I would buy an FNX45 which is 15+1. Putting both the USP & HK45 to shame. Ergonomics & pistol control are the top two things I look for in a 45acp handgun. I personally carry a 45c (8+1). Small hit on ergo, but gain a slight edge in concealability while still being easy to control and feel comfortable. The 8+1 I'm use to because, that's all I've carried for years. I don't need to carry truck loads of ammo to feel more safe. I always have the option to toss in another 8rd mag in a holder too. The flat plate 45c 8rds are tiny. So that's 16+1. USP is still nice, but it's like the old jaded record vinyl DJ's shaking their fists at CDJ DJ's. Vinyl has that nice analog sound to it that gets everyone all warm & fuzzy. CDJ's have better options and are more versatile. It's great to reminisce on and enjoy. But antiquated. Newer tech, better options for accessorizes, better ergo, easier concealment. HK45/45c wins.

Lol 20% more capacity is critical in this day and age - capacity isn’t everything but when you look at the FNX tactical, that’s not even in the running for professional high capacity 45s because of the complicated fire control mechanism in the lack of ability to work on them hence they have not been adopted. In early pistol trials.

What's funny is that in my city, I searched all the gun stores for an M1911 style 45. I didn't care what brand as long as it was reputable but I couldn't find a single one that was NOT $1K! I was about to give up when I swung by the mom and pop shop that sold me my Glock. Same deal there, but waitaminute! What's this!? A H&K USP, the Lara Croft gun! The owner said it was under $900. I picked it up. I was expecting it to feel heavy but ze Germans of course take ergonomics very seriously. It felt solid in the hands despite the size. The dual function safety was no issue, I just carry it cocked and locked at home. Although left handed, my dad wisely trained me to use guns right handed. Even then, it was easy to shoot with either hand because of the unusual lever mag release. This is a BIG gun so it was a bit of a stretch to release the mag with my thumb. I found that I could just use my trigger finger to push down from the OTHER side. After a few trips to the range I got used to it. Accuracy seemed abysmal and I was thinking "Isn't H&K known for accurate guns?" I realized a few months later that I had been so excited that I forgot some guns need a break-in period. Eventually, the groups slowly started getting better and soon it was pumping out 2" 4-shot groups with crappy ammo like there was nothing to it. I'm sure people will like the H&K 45 just as much but I'll stick with my USP. It has grown on me and has proven to be totally reliable. I don't have to worry or freak out if I forget to clean it. I usually put about 200 rounds through it before a cleaning and even then, it always functioned flawlessly.

The HK45 Tactical is considerably less expensive, I suspect because it has less demand for it. You can find them between $850 and $900 pretty easily. The USP45 Tactical is going to run you $1400 to $1500, when you can find them. The HK45 is going to be easier to find holsters and accessories for, certainly easier to find lights and lasers for on the more standardized pic rail. The USP45 Tactical can be a bitch to find holsters for, esp if you want a light bearing holster for it, since there was only a few lights that fit HK's "universal" rail, and they all suck. If you run an adapter, like the GG&G, so you can throw a Surefire on your HK, you are going to limit yourself to custom kydex. Another big and unpleasant surprise might be magazine cost. HK Parts has USP45 12 rounders and HK45 10 rounders for under $50. But if you want the 13 round HK45 mags, they are going to run you about $110. If you're like me and like to have at least half a dozen mags, running 13 round HK45 mags to compete with the standard 12 round mags of the USP is going to cost you an extra $360+. That is going to significantly reduce the initial cost advantage of the HK45. I am right handed but left eye dominant, so I shoot left handed. Growing up this way, I got used to manipulating the mag release with the left index finger and simply racking the slide rather than using the slide release. This allows much better cross training across different pistols, since prior to 2010 or so, ambi mag and slide releases really weren't a thing. I think the one control that HK could have really benefited from making ambi on the HK45 is the one they, for whatever reason, choose not to; the safety. So the Gen Zérs might appreciate those features on the HK45 a little bit more. I don't personally see it as a big deal and am fine with the controls on the USP, since I have to get an ambi safety for either of them. And then we get to the intangibles. The USP had a lot of hype when I was in college. Growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, the USP was a big deal. I grew to associate it with quality and the aesthetics just appeal to me. I like the ergonomics because I have big hands and normally carry a full size frame Glock, so for me, between the two, I would probably go with the USP 45 Tactical.

I have a USP 9 I bought in 1994 after trying a P7 and a Glock. It felt fine in my small hands, the others felt like bricks. Recently I bought a HK45; all great guns, but the grips are a little better on Walther’s offerings, from the P99 to the PDP.

Excellent analysis. I have owned a USP Tactical . 45 for (perhaps) 25 years. IMHO, it is a superb firearm for its intended purposes. In fact, the only substantive change I would make to it would be better grip ergonomics, specifically a small-medium-large interchangeable back-straps. However, when the USP series was first designed, tested and produced, this now largely adopted autoloader feature wasn’t available on any semiautomatics (as far as I know). So in aggregate, I award the USP Tactical .45 an “A+;” it is, I believe, equally superior to the P7 series - which is saying a great deal - although obviously the designs’ purposes greatly differ.

I own a HK45 and have shoot a lot of times the USP .45. I still like both, but the HK45 has better ergonomics for me. Capacity might be a point for some people. I have a +2 extension on every mag. I had never an issue with the decocker while firing recoil extensive loads like .45 Super out of my HK45. And for your information, the barrel has also a polygon rifling as the USP. It's sad that HK doesn't further improve these kind of handguns with such as a Match Triggers for the HK45 or if you buy a new gun (USP, P30, HK45) that it comes with a red dot cut - such as the VP9 OR. That would be great. Other than these 2 points I'm really happy with my HK pistol.

I'm not going to be shooting 50k rounds, need that USP name or 2 more rounds to justify that cost... And the HK45 honesty has damn near the reliability of the USP with a 1913 rail and better egros...at close to half the cost...

I think the USP Family overall is much more worthy, than the SFP / HK45. Not that these guns are bad, but it's just pretty obvious, that there's so much engineering in the USP family, coming from the MK23. The newer Generation with SFP / HK45 are just "updates" for smaller hands imho. Most ppl with smaller hands had problems to get a good grip with the USP guns. I would pick any USP ALWAYS over the SFP / HK45 Gen... Only great benefit is the fit of todays lights / holsters, but that's not the end of the world! ^^

Question for everyone before I submit my reply to this video. I see that the presenter has the HK45T V1 with adjustable sights. I heard that HK mostly moved to fixed sights for the HK45T. Why would they do that on a model meant to be shot both suppressed and unsuppressed? It's annoying for me, because it's way easier to find the V1 Tactical on gunbroker with fixed sights than adjustable. Unless I'm missing something, adjustable sights make far more sense for a gun that will switch between suppressed and unsuppressed use. I'd like to own an HK45T in the V1 safetly/decocker configuration (unless the USP45T wins me over!) eventually, but I'd like to make an informed choice as far as the sights are concerned. On to my response: Both are great guns. It's fair to be bummed about the lower capacity (I heard years ago that HK might make a higher cap mag, guess that didn't happen), but the HK45 controls (bigger mag release, longer safety that can be set up ambi or on either side, ambi, lower profile but super functional slide releases) are all around better from my impression. I've never had a problem accidentally decocking the HK45 (I always slip my thumb under the safety and keep it there, though) or dropping mags even from a near-90 degree angle. There's nothing wrong with the USP's blocky grip in my view, though I like Glocks, including the .45 ACP G30 and 21 (Gen 4, so SF), so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I think that wide grips can contribute to a feeling of being soft-shooting. That said, the HK45's vase-like grip is designed to fill your hand just right, tapering as it does toward the top and bottom and the HK45 shoots very nicely. I don't think you lose much, if anything, and you gain the HK45's improved (lowered) bore axis for less muzzle flip. The HK45 does have more of a 1911 than Glock (or insert your favorite beefy, rectangle-shaped grip pistol here) feel in the hand due to its slimness and grip angle. One should note, however, that its curves and shaping distinguish it from slab-sided 1911s (even with undercuts here and there) and make for a *very* comfortable and confidence-inspiring feel. I have large hands, but it's definitely noticeable how my hands engage the HK45 a little better than, say, a G21 or FNX 45. I'd say the HK45 grip conforms to the hand just a little better than that of the 1911, but it's close. Let's be honest, all of these grips, fat and blocky, slim and blocky, slim but curved and contoured, etc. work pretty well as long as they're usable for YOUR hand in the context of the entire pistol's layout and shooting characteristics. Less reciprocating mass on a pistol is a good thing, by the way. It means less mass slamming into the gun and its recoil system and less mass producing movement in the pistol as it cycles. Every test of the HK45 so far indicates excellent durability. The fact that we have info on the Federal ammo USP45 with an unbelievable round count is very lucky. Neither the HK45 or USP45 are super commonly used guns, so reports like that are rare indeed. I think that it's fair to say that both guns are pretty well "bomb-proof," to take a phrase from pistol-training.com's impressive test of the HK45. I don't know if the USP buffer system is actually better than that on the 45--nobody does. As stated previously, both guns have done very well in testing and use. The spring *sounds* like a better, higher-quality part, but is this proven empirically? Perhaps it makes no difference in the lifespan of the recoil assembly, perhaps it does. We don't know. Pick the gun that feels and shoots the best for you . Consider the features that each brings to the table, but focus on the overall feel and especially shooting and control manipulation. They're both fine, functional pistols, so choose what works better for you and don't worry too much. And if they both shoot pretty similarly, look to see if you're overlooking any aspect of the shooting/handling. It might be something that you compensate for and isn't immediately obvious. Are you stretching a little to hit a control? Is your grip repeatable, comfortable, and secure through shooting and mag changes? Is it hard to get your hand and trigger finger in the proper position repeatedly and in different contexts? How fluent is your trigger stroke on both? If both guns are still even afterward, go with which appeals to you more based on feel, appearance, features, etc. You'll probably have made the right choice.

USP 45 for me. Why? Cause that's what I own. Then again, I'm older than dirt. I'd like to find a HK45 magazine release, for my USP. I grabbed some Solum Tool base plates, to add additional capacity to my magazines. Stay away from the Promag magazines. Complete crap, IMO. Thanks for the share!!

@@FirearmFreedom I put the TLR-3 on that pistol. Along with Mepro night sights. You can find holsters for the USP 45, with the TLR-3. At least, I did. Thanks again!

USP fans are weirdly defensive of their guns.Dudes tout that two extra rounds like it’s 10 more.I don’t own either but both are two of the best .45 caliber pistols ever made without a doubt.

The USP45 can handle 45 Super ammo without modification. The HK45 shouldn't fire 45 Super.

I disagree already on multiple points. Not a single person I put the HK USP in their hands chose it over an HK45. HK45 looks better "subjective", feels better, better magazine release, recoil system updated-simplified, more slender grip, 11 rounds is more than most 1911's. Has a Picatinny rail and with LEM trigger, no trigger squeeze or slip issue, IMHO better than the DA/SA option. There are holster options and best of all cost HUNDREDS of dollars less. I own 3 P series and 3 USP series, so its not like I don't own them. The only thing I wish I could do is put a stronger spring if I chose to in my HK45, but for the .45 Supers I've shot I've had zero issues. I'm not saying a HK USP isn't good, I just think for 99% of us it really isn't needed, diminishing returns IMHO.

looks like you shoot with your thumb over the decocker instead of under it.. that's why it decocked on you in the middle of firing

HK's biggest problem are their customers. No matter what new thing they do, their most loyal customers will tell them "That's cool and a nice gun, but I like this one you designed 20-50 years ago" and they still have to make and sell MP5s and USPs. And that is why I think they hate their customers.

I agree that the HK45 is a step back. They wanted to cut production costs and produce in the US. The USP is more complicated to produce and in US would have been way more expensive. So they really just cheapened up the gun to remain competitive in the market. They made a mistake !!! The USP, made in Germany will always be more desireable.

If HK would pull their head out their ass and make a USP with a light rail it would make the gun relevant and on top the food chain again. If they added a milled slide for optic then it becomes the #1 military/ LEO gun again…imo No clue why they don’t update it. It’s so vastly superior to all their other line.
