An excellent dual language interview! Players from international backgrounds who don’t speak English (or simply choose to only do interviews in their native tongue so not to have words twisted) have to “speak with the bat” as Vlad so eloquently once said. The burden is on our media and reporters to open that barrier up for us. Few live interviews in those situations work- they’re awkward and sometimes demean the player with long breaks or the media member who may not fully be equipped (happens far less these days). Carlos Pena did not go to broadcasters school but he looks like a television veteran with years of in studio experience. Give this guy his own show!

I agree. Lets give Pena his roses. Because he allows an eloquent guy like Vlad (he is VERY eloquent if you speak Spanish) to express himself in his comfortable, natural tounge. Vlad speaks enough english, he's just very cautious with sounding akward and stumbling, because in in Spanish, he is the opposite of that.

It's too bad that he can't speak to the English speaking American people though. The stars of today are not watched as much partly because the don't speak English. Most people I know want to understand what a player is saying after a game winning hit or a playoff win but it's all lost in translation now. Juan Gonzalez was a prime example of that. His numbers rivaled those of Griffey, Bonds and Frank Thomas but people nowadays don't know who he is. Griffey and Vlad are my two favorite players but sometimes I wish it were simpler to be multilingual.

@@tornadotom2390 yeah that’s true I actually think a reason that baseball is becoming less popular in the United States is that most of the best players in the league don’t speak much English so the fans aren’t able to get to know the players the way they do with NBA or NFL players. In Latin America they are like heroes tho

Even if he did speak English he wouldn't do it because he tends to be an extremely reserved person. Even in Spanish he barely likes to speak because as a child he was not able to go to school in the Dominican Republic. He even went as far as to say that his lack of education makes him feel like he doesn't have enough to bring into a conversation so he just ends up keeping to himself. I actually think I read somewhere that other Hispanic players nicknamed him "El mudo" which is Spanish for mute.

It's so much better when players speak their first language because it allows them to really get into the conversation as themselves. As someone who's tried speaking other languages regularly (with english being my first language), it's hard to inject my personality into conversations when I'm thinking too much about which words I would use. If anything I wish the MLB would hire more translators for Latin Players for postgame interviews on TV and all other capacities. It adds more representation and personality to the game.

@@JohnCena-wz7gc bro, it's not about judging, it's about common sense, and about respect. You live 30 years in a country, you learn the fucking language, it's that simple. I'm not from the US, but when people immigrate or come live here, they're expected to learn the local language.

He’s usually around his Hispanic friends in LA, not to mention he doesn’t spend significant amounts of time in one place. He Doesn’t have to learn shit. Montreal’s local language is French not English too you ween. Respect is being grateful, not what other nonsense your saying. So shut your fucking ass up.

@@JohnCena-wz7gc Bro, why are you insulting me? Did I insult you? Seriously... I spent my entire adult life fighting against racism and donating to anti-racist causes, so being labelled a racist is beyond ridiculous, but I won't blame you, you don't know me. In any case, I'd love you to explain how saying people should learn the local language is racist. I've travelled to more than 60 countries, I love different languages and cultures. So, I'm not a prick who thinks people shouldn't speak their language. I've seen some assholes go up to hispanics (or people speaking other languages) saying "HerE wE sPEak eNGliSh", which is fucking disrespectful. It's precisely because I love those different cultures that I say that when you live somewhere long enough, you learn the local language. That's it. And no need to teach me about Montreal, cause...I'm from there bro ;) But players who come here aren't expected to learn French, they're expected to learn the language of the team, which is English. Anyway, have a great and hopefully stress-free day. Peace.
