@@theplayerofus319 Rommel was not supposed to have played an active part in the july plot in any case, so that's simply not true. Also the goal of the july plot was to replace Hitler with a more competent leader. Stauffenberg was a Nazi through and through, he believed in the war and he believed in final victory. So were his co conspirators. Their best case scenario was a separate peace with the west, but that was too late as we know today, as the allies had already agreed upon a military defeat of the third Reich, no matter what. They would not have made peace with Germany to fight the USSR together, as envisioned by certain Nazis.

@@quineloe Stauffenberg hoped that Germany could hold onto the Netherlands right up to July 20th (something that my godfather in the Dutch resistance would not have appreciated!) but he had a half-Jewish sister-in-law, worried about how badly Kristalnacht (the beginning of the Shoah) made Germany look in the eyes of the world, was appalled by the starving to death of Russian POWs, was later a witness to the killing of the Jews of Vitebsk and learned about the industrial scale genocide of Auschwitz in the fall of '43. He argued with a cousin in the resistance who questioned the morality of assasinating Hitler before he had a trial by countering with "the horrors going on every day in the camps". He articulated his own moral courage when he said to fellow conspirators, "He who has the courage to do something must do so in the knowledge that he will go down in German history as a traitor. If he does not, however, he will be a traitor to his conscience". He also said to a fellow Catholic in the resistance, "We are being tested before God". No, he wasn't a Nazi but he certainly felt guilt about the terrible crimes committed by his government and the army of which he was part.

I believe he's more of a Prussian than a nazi, relating to the formers military legacy and the supposed honor it had that nazism lacked. He probably was indifferent to Jews and didn't particularly like or hate them but like your usual Prussian back then, he did hate the Poles. As for the allies most likely not signing peace, who knows really if the west will honor their agreement with the soviets. If the conspirators were realistic in their demands, the west will probably be willing to abandon their agreement with Stalin who is literally about to conquer eastern europe and Poland, a member of the Allies.

I think all of us Arm Chair historians can agree upon this: Rommel knew exactly how to stop the Allies in Normandy. Keep them on the beach and fight them with every man, gun, and panzer until they were blown out to sea. He knew first hand just how effective Allied Airpower was and that the Luftwaffe and Kreigsmarine were basically non-existent. Once the Allies landed and established the beach head it was a wrap. Rommel said this shortly after the landings "If I were the Allied forces right now, I could finish off the war in 14 Days "

This clip summarized the key reasons why Germany lost: 1. Since 1943, especially the Anglo-American Front Berlin can only rely to the Heer since Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine are basically non-existed. Allied air supremacy paralyzed the German's movement, supply routes and industrial bases 2. There were simply not enough reinforcement, not enough men and materials, as pointed out in the film that the Germans can only choose to defend either Cherbourg or Caen. In fact 3 days later Hitler ordered a counter-attack with 4 fresh SS Panzer divisions, but Rommel were forced to commit 3 of them in Operation Epsom as there weren't enough infantry to hold the lines. That was the moment Germany lost Normandy since they lost their last chances to be in offensive. 3. Hitler only believe in himself and often overrule the front commanders, which is why Rundstedt say he can only move his guards from left to right. Hitler failed to stay in reality and authorized a withdrawal only when it's too late

there are more reasons than that, dogg. german tank tracks were too narrow for the russian mud. hitler's personal love of the mauser 98 prevented the wehrmacht from developing a semi auto primary battle rifle like the garand. the supply lines were stretched too thin in southern russia and weak romanian and hungarian forces guarded crucial flanks. manstein's 11th army was sent north to waste its time at leningrad instead of pushing south towards stalingrad and astrakhan. the blimp flown outside britain prewar was also using the wrong frequencies so it did not detect the chain home radar network. this is the biggest reason why the luftwaffe failed to win the battle of britain. there are also countless other reasons.

By desing. Hitler had a habit of giving comissions and promotions to people who didn't get along with each other, so they were constantly competing and undemining each other, vying for influence and controll. Aside that it played right into the Nazi philosophy of constant rivalry being natural, it had also added benefit for keeping most of the higher ups from conspiring against Hitler as they were busy with their own struggless. This worked in a sense that it took wind out of sails of any organized coup attempts until the very late of the war(there were individual defiants like Hans Oster and Wilhelm Canaris, but it took all the way until Stalingrad surrendering to start "serious" talks among generals)- but it also had another effect: co-operation between the generals was often very difficult due to constant infighting. While Allies had their squables (Patton and Montgomery were quite infamous having a magical ability to get everyone who they had to work with to hate them, not to mention General Joseph Stillwell mismanagement of China relations and both brittish and american forces under his command, to the point he got the nickname "vinegar-joe") they never really escalated to the point they started openly sabotaging each other. Same goes for Soviets: while there sure was professional rivalry between likes of Ivan Konev and Georgy Zukov, it never really exploded into open animosity like in Nazi germany.

That was the whole point for the invasion of Russia, Russia was re-arming itself and Germany wanted the Russian resources/land in order to fight a prolonged war with the US which would have been an eventuality. The thing that really hindered the armies once they invaded were the T-34 and KV-1 against which only the 88 was effective against, it was a severe blow to the German morale and progress. Had they invaded earlier (had Italy not messed up) Moscow would have been captured before winter though some Red Army generals insisted it "wouldn't have mattered".

Yeesh. This scene is remarkable. It shows Hitler's impulsiveness and unwillingness to confront reality. But then at its last moment it flips everything and makes you think that Hitler was actually the only one who truly understood what the gravity of the actions they took and where they'd inevitably lead. When giving his orders to fight to the last man his Generals all started seeing him as a mad man and wanted to sue for some sort of peace instead. Hitler may have been right in his sense that trying to negotiate terms when they were that weak was futile and their only option was to fight their way out.

This movie clip shows June 17, 1944. Operation Overlord began at Normandy on June 6. This was a disaster for Germany but it would get even worse. The Allies coordinated with each other, something the Axis was quite awful in doing. The Russians would begin Operation Bagration on June 22. Both have the worst possible outcomes for Germany and it's a double disaster. The Germans would lose about 1 million men (dead, captured, wounded) between Overlord and Bagration's two months worth of combat. Bagration essentially destroyed German Army Group Center out east, wrecking 28 out of 34 divisions. Out west, France is liberated by the Allies. German forces both east and west are reeling. An interesting part was that the need for reinforcement was greater for the Germans out east. A formidable reserve was put together in the 2nd half of 1944. Instead of going east, they were instead committed to the gamble in the Ardennes in December 1944.

(Scene: A bunker in Berlin. Adolf Hitler sits at a desk, surrounded by his top generals. He is visibly agitated, with maps and reports spread out in front of him. Suddenly, a messenger enters the room.) Messenger: Mein Führer, General Rommel's forces have been pushed back by the Allied invasion in Normandy. (Hitler's face turns red with anger, and he slams his fist on the desk.) Hitler: What? How is this possible? Rommel was supposed to be invincible! He was our brilliant tactician, our Desert Fox! This cannot be happening! (Hitler's generals exchange nervous glances, unsure of how to react to his outburst.) General Keitel: Mein Führer, the Allied invasion was unexpected and caught us off guard. The sheer number of troops and the element of surprise overwhelmed our defenses. Hitler: There must be some mistake! Rommel has never failed me before. He always found a way to turn the tide of battle. I refuse to believe that he has been defeated! General Jodl: Mein Führer, Rommel's forces fought valiantly, but the Allies had overwhelming firepower and air superiority. The situation was simply impossible to overcome. (Hitler stands up abruptly, his voice filled with fury.) Hitler: Impossible? Nothing is impossible for the German army! Rommel should have been able to crush those invaders like bugs! This is a disgrace to our military! (General Guderian, known for his blunt nature, steps forward.) Guderian: Mein Führer, blaming Rommel for this defeat is unfair. He was given inadequate resources and time to prepare. We cannot expect miracles from our commanders. (Hitler glares at Guderian, his eyes filled with rage.) Hitler: Do not presume to question me, Guderian! Rommel was a hero, a symbol of our invincibility, and he has failed me! It is clear that he is no longer capable of leading our forces! (Hitler slams his hand on the desk once again, causing the generals to flinch.) Hitler: I demand an immediate report on Rommel's failures and his plans to rectify this situation. If he cannot, then he will be removed from command! (The generals exchange worried glances, knowing that Rommel's reputation is at stake.) General Keitel: Mein Führer, perhaps we should consider providing Rommel with additional reinforcements and support to regain control in Normandy. (Hitler paces back and forth, his anger slowly subsiding into contemplation.) Hitler: Very well, Keitel. We shall give Rommel one last chance. But if he fails again, there will be consequences. The German army cannot afford any more defeats. (The generals nod, knowing that Hitler's words are final. They leave the room, leaving Hitler alone with his thoughts. As he gazes at the maps before him, his expression turns from anger to a steely determination.)

Ah, so you want to imagine Hitler's reaction to the invasion involving Rommel, huh? Well, let's just say Hitler's reaction would probably be a mixture of anger, frustration, and maybe even a hint of admiration. Rommel, known as the "Desert Fox," was a highly skilled and respected German general during World War II. However, Hitler's leadership and strategic decisions often interfered with the military's operational effectiveness. Hitler's ego and micromanagement tendencies may have hindered Rommel's ability to fully utilize his talents and achieve the desired outcomes. So, while Hitler might have been initially upset about the invasion, he might also have begrudgingly acknowledged Rommel's abilities. It's important to remember that Hitler's legacy is one of devastation and that any admiration for his actions is highly inappropriate.

@@innatecharisma Well I don't know a whole lot about Silberschneider's work. I was limiting my comments to an 'apples-to-apples' comparison and leaving it at that. And hey, Herr Ganz has passed away anyway. It's not like he can reprise the role.

Hitler was of course a monster. Having said that the view of him after the war was derived from his generals accounts of him. They wrote a series of self serving memoirs shifting the blame for everything that happened in the war to him. They tried to portray themselves as geniuses hamstrung by the lower class Hitler who had no real idea of how to run an army. This clip channels that vision of Hitler. He is drawing something before the generals come in spending his time being idle and and then reacts irrationally. All part of the mad man Hitler myth. The reality is of course is that the German generals were complicit in the same crimes as Hitler. Also at this point of the war the Eastern front was collapsing. The real Hitler was constantly engaged in having to make decisions about the Eastern and Italian fronts. He would not be sitting around doing nothing and his conversation would have been of a more technical nature

I mean Bruno Ganz is the absolute perfection among Hitler portrayals, frankly, most actors overact, and all you see a cartoonish man who yells at people, even masters like Anthony Hopkins failed at this task. However, I must say, Johannes Silberschneider was almost as good as Ganz in this movie, he did pretty much everything right.

In other words, if they had just not been Nazis. Genocidal conquest was at the core of Nazism. for alternate history, had there been no Nazi Party, i think the most likely outcome would have been a Communist takeover of Germany, and then the Second World War would have seen Britain and America, likely allied with Fascist Italy, against Communist Germany and Russia. France might have been on either side, depending on whether or not they too had a Communist revolution. How this alternate European scenario would have affected the Pacific I can't speculate.

Patton wasn't entirely wrong. However he was 100% correct is saying that we had the firepower to push the Russians back where they belonged. I often wonder what would have happened had we done that. I tend to think that the Cold War could have been very different and may not have ever happened. If nothing else, it would have been better for a lot of countries that were stuck behind the Iron Curtain for many many years.
