Shinee is a legendary Kpop group who really set the standard for what a Kpop boy group should be. They are almost universally respected in the industry and their songs have been covered by many other idols .Shinee Key has a current hit called Bad Love that you might like. Shinee Taemin is a very popular solo artist as well. Shinee tragically lost their lead singer Jonghyun in 2017. He and Onew are among the best vocalists in Kpop. Shinee is famous for their incredible live performances and are known as the Princes of Kpop.

Thanks! Professionally. This group is interesting precisely for its musical finds, mixing genres, experimentation with the sound of classics and synthetic instruments. And the voices - as noted - are a delight. Once you hear and see the live performances of the band, you fall in love with their shining world once and for all. And this is not even delving into the history of the band, discography, solo works of the participants. Every track, every album is an aesthetic masterpiece. Their fate is beautiful and tragic at the same time!

Fun fact: As you may know, Atlantis is a mythical city that is part of a story within Greek mythology, referring to the Lost City of Atlantis. The story of Atlantis is most often depicted as a utopian society on an island that became submerged and lost in the middle of the ocean. SHINee's MV is referencing the lost city of Atlantis, so it's supposed to look like they are visiting Atlantis at the bottom of the sea. The whole MV is a reference to the story of Atlantis, which is why you see them selling seafood and why they are underwater, etc. As I interpret the MV, the convenience store is a cover for the fact that it sits on top of a portal to the city of Atlantis. To the average person, the store just looks like a regular store, but if you are in on the secret you know that if you head to the storage room or basement, etc. you will find a magical elevator/submarine that will take you to "Atlantis." I think that move in the choreography where Key and Minho make the circle is them gathering all their power and love and they are blasting it all to the fans (Shawols) or they are sending all their love to the girl who they are singing about in the song, etc. Like a superhero who is summoning all their powers. Because the SHINee members are sort of supposed to have power as the keepers of the portal to "Atlantis," etc. Plus, if I had to guess, it also might be something linking SHINee to SM's Universe. Most of SM's groups' storylines are connected in some way and they are all part of one big story. Because Minho writes all his own rap sections in SHINee's songs they are all very meaningful, and are strategically placed in the song for a reason. If you pay attention to his lyrics you will see they have a lot of deep meaning and they enhance the story and add more depth to the song. For example, the long sss sound you hear at the end of his rap lines in "Atlantis" are supposed to mimic the sound of waves as they crash on shore or against the rocks, etc. Minho is actually quite poetic when it comes to his songwriting. You should check out the behind the scenes MV shoot for "Atlantis", kzread.info/dash/bejne/nKJq082MftXVaaQ.html, to really see how detailed everything in the MV was. Fun fact No. 2: Although all the aqua blue you see in this MV is supposed to represent water and the city of Atlantis, because SHINee's fan color is pearl aqua, all the aqua blue and green colors you see in the MV also represent SHINee as a group and their connection to their fans. Also, SHINee will forever be a group of 5, so, they always make sure to include Jonghyun, in everything they do. So, if you notice the MNet date in the bottom left corner in the opening scene of the MV, it says April 8, which is Jonghyun's birthday. And if you pay attention to the choreography when the members put their arms on each others' shoulders, you see Taemin stretches his arm out as if he is resting it on an invisible person next to him, which is thought to be a nod to the fact that this is where Jonghyun would be, and even in other parts of the choreography they leave a wide gap in the middle which fans also think was done as a reference to Jonghyun's spot in the group. Yes, all the members of SHINee have amazing high note abilities. Even Minho, who is the main rapper and has the deepest voice out of all of them, has been known to hit some impressive high notes on occasion. That is what makes SHINee so outstanding and why they are so highly respected in the industry. They are idols' idols and legends of legends for a reason.

I enjoyed your breakdown. Very interesting and learned some new things. SHINee’s music/production, MV’s, vocals/harmonizing, choreography everything is top tier. Their choreography and vocals are amazing Live. If you like vocals, something different, good music then SHINee is the group to do breakdowns. They’re live ballads are crazy good if you want to focus on vocals. You’ll enjoy their vocals and production breaking it down. Please do more SHINee (don’t call me, everybody, Lucifer, Sherlock, view, dream girl, married to the music performance video…there’s so much more) Each member solo work too. Onew’s Blue (Onew’s a vocalist so if want to breakdown vocals then Nessun Dorma, Rainy Blue, holds a “40sec” note in song called Friends) . Taemin has many. He’s very artistic with MVs/dance.production is great (advice, idea, criminal, want, move etc). Key’s bad love & hate that (check the album, all his tracks are very good too for vocals, production)

@@thebillboard500club Great, thank you! I've enjoyed your expertise but I've been waiting for you to analyze Taemin and SHINee, so I'm delighted. I see you've reacted to Advice on your patreon so I'll check that out, thank you. SHINee's discography is impressive (esoecially the b-sides) and they're known for their live performances, Taemin too, as well as Onew, Key, Jonghyun, and Minho (always busy with his acting career) are mesmerizing artists. Onew has a honey voice, and his new album is due in December. Key's new album, Bad Love, is recently out, and you know about Advice (love all the songs on the album, especially Strings). Taemin's trio of 2Kids, Criminal, and IDEA is not to be missed, as well as everything everyone else will mention, including Want, Move, Just Me and You (newly released), Heaven, Black Rose, Sayonara Hitori, etc. I still listen to/watch his debut releases, Danger and Ace.) Obviously SHINee is my favorite group. Thank you for sharing your indepth analyses. You are very good at what you do, and I appreciate your deep engagement with the music. Enjoy your journey.

Welcome to SHINee, the known, universal golden standard for Kpop groups. They are universally known for their killer vocals - especially live vocals -- heavenly harmonies, and phenomenal live performances. A 2nd gen., group, they debuted in 2008 with the youngest member, Taemin, just 14 and the eldest, Onew (held the very long note) 18. They don't have a main vocal anymore. All of them are lead vocals and each have very distinctive voices which are very versatile and when combined, produce the best harmonies ever found in Kpop. SHINee doesn't do genres. They have always been very experimental and usually combine several genres within one song. This is why their music is so distinctive, fresh, and new. They are constantly evolving. Their other latest hit, "Don't Call Me", married Hip-Hop with R&B and musical theater while spouting scathing break-up lyrics. Onew, the one who held the long note you noticed, is the leader of the group and holds the record for the longest-held, sustained not in Kpop @ 40+ seconds. You can still find it on YT. He has a very rich, honey voice that is very unique and captures everyone's attention. Key (2nd vocalist) has an extremely versatile voice that is more nasal in tone. He can really belt it out like the others and hit those high notes as well. Minho (rapper) has naturally has a deep, velvety voice, but after being with SHINee for so long, he has trained his voice to sing at a higher pitch. He is always lamenting that he wants at least one song with a lower pitch....to the amusement of his brothers (hyungs). He never gets his way. Then we have baby Taemin (first vocalist), youngest of the group, who couldn't sing at debut due to immature vocal cords (he was only 14). He became SM's first-ever male soloist from an active group and showed the most improvement in a very short period of time (he went from no lines in their debut song in 2008 to a now legendary, and the most prolific, soloist of the group). He can go from soft, whispery angelic tones to a clear-as-a-bell head voice, or a perfect dirty, gritty metal/rock vocal that can shock someone who hasn't heard him go there before. That leaves our precious Jonghyun who, at debut, was the main vocal of SHINee. He was a vocal POWERHOUSE and probably the best-ever vocalist Kpop has ever seen. I can't describe his vocal abilities. You actually have to hear him to understand. Although we lost our precious musical genius in 2017, he forever remains an integral part of SHINee which is a group of forever 5. You can see this demonstrated when Minho is rapping and we see them in a line with their arms around each others' shoulders. Taemin, at the end, has his left arm raised and curled as if embracing someone - that's Jonghyun's place, the ever-present spirit of their SHINee brother. I really hope you will continue to explore an analyze their music and start with "Don't Call Me". They have a VAST discography between their group work and individual solo catalog. It's quite eclectic with a little bit of EVERYTHING.

With this repackaged album, SHINee are just doing what we have all come to expect from them -- showing us something that has never been seen or heard before and starting a new trend. Nothing you hear from them will ever be like anything you have ever seen or heard before. They raise the bar even higher with every comeback. And that's what makes them SHINee. :D With every new song release, SHINee are expected to come out with a style and sound that is brand new, not only for them, but in the industry as a whole. And "Atlantis" is a perfect example of that. What you just experienced is exactly what makes SHINee legends. And this is the reason why they are so highly respected, and why almost everyone in the industry who came after them cites them as one of their biggest influences and one of the reasons why they wanted to become a singer and dancer, etc. SHINee are one of the most iconic and influential groups. They are always setting trends, never following them. SHINee were designed to be SM Entertainment's experimental boy group, so everything they do is meant to be the first and they are expected to set the trend. With every new song SHINee produces it's expected to be different than the last, so you will never hear the same style or sound from them in any of their songs, even on the same album, and yet, somehow it will always sound like SHINee. The industry looks to SHINee to show them what the next song style and dance trend will be. And it is said that within 3 months of SHINee releasing their new song and choreography, you will see that same sound and style being duplicated across the industry with every comeback to follow from both boy groups and girl groups. When SHINee does something the industry takes note and follows suit. SHINee has started the trend with almost everything -- with every one of their songs to their dances to clothing trends, to live performances, to the way Kpop is promoted -- there is almost nothing that can't be attributed to something SHINee has been involved in. You just discovered why SHINee still hold one of the top spots after 13 years in the industry. If you are impressed now, just wait until you go through their entire discography of songs and MVs. So far, they have 13 full-length albums (7 Korean albums and 6 Japanese albums) -- plus several repackaged albums, a multitude of mini albums, numerous OSTS, they each have solo songs and albums and there are hundreds of live performances that will absolutely leave you speechless with their talent. And it only gets more and more impressive as you follow them through their career. They have accomplished a lot in the past 13 years and they are one of the groups that made Kpop what it is today. However, if you want to see where SHINee truly shines, you have to see their live performances. SHINee are part of the second generation of Kpop and yet they are younger than most everyone in their generation and are the same age or even younger than many of the members of groups who came after them, such as EXO and BTS, etc. which are part of Kpop's third generation. SHINee debuted young and have the experience of seasoned veterans. When SHINee debuted in 2008, Onew (the leader and lead vocalist) was 18, Jonghyun (the main vocalist and songwriter) had just turned 18, Minho (the main rapper and sub-vocalist) and Key (lead vocalist and sub-rapper) were 16 and Taemin (Main dancer and lead vocalist) was 14, so now they are all in their late 20s and early 30s. (Onew turned 31 last December.) SHINee are some of the most well respected artists in the industry. Onew (Pronounced Oh-New, real name Lee JinKi) -- the smiley one with the brown cardigan sweater -- is the leader of the group and he has one of the most unique and best voices in the industry. (Onew means, or sounds like, the Korean words for soft or gentle, so he was given his stage name because he has a very calm and gentle personality.) His vocals are unmatched. He even holds the record (40+ seconds) for the longest continuous note without changing tone or pitch, etc. Key -- the one with the teal patchwork jacket and the sparkly purple top -- is our fashionista of the group who is SHINee's stylist for a lot of their MVs and stage outfits. SHINee are known for setting trends and never being afraid to experiment, so Key is known for really paying attention to detail when it comes to fashion. He is known for always being unique and wanting to stand out. He is an amazing singer and is a sub-rapper in the group. He is also known as SHINee's dance copy machine. Key has the ability to see and remember choreography the fastest in the group. He only needs to watch the dance once and he has it memorized. He is also SHINee's fluent English speaker, and he is almost as good as a native speaker. Minho -- the one with the orange tiger striped sweater -- is the main rapper and visual of the group, but his vocals are also some of the best in the industry. Minho sings just as much as he raps. He also writes most of his own raps in SHINee's songs. Minho is a top actor and he has starred in numerous dramas and movies. He is also known as a top athlete. He says these days he goes to the gym a couple of times a day to work out just because he likes to work out, but he is also crazy about soccer, and he plays basketball, baseball and golf, and he is good at track and field events, etc., as well. And not only does he enjoy playing all those sports, but he is usually the best athlete on the field and he pretty much wins every time. Minho's nickname is "Flaming Charisma," and one reason is for his intense passion for sports and his need to always win. And, as I think you know, Taemin -- the one in the red leather jacket -- is considered one of THE BEST dancers in the industry, and that's not just by fans but by everyone in the industry, including his peers. Taemin's nickname is the Korean Michael Jackson. He is also one of the most popular solo artists in the industry and he is a member of the Kpop supergroup SuperM. Taemin truly is art when it comes to his performances. Although Jonghyun wasn't in the MV -- because he passed away 3 years ago -- in order to get to know SHINee, you have to get to know him as well. He is known as one of the best vocalist in Kpop who was one of the most prolific songwriters and composers of his generation. Jonghyun wrote and composed almost 40% of SHINee's songs, plus he wrote all of his own solo songs and numerous songs for other artists, such as EXO's "Playboy" and songs for Taemin, IU and Lee HI, etc. He was one of the only SM artists to be given complete artistic control over his work, including several of SHINee's song selections. SM knew that if Jonghyun was involved in any way that the song would be a hit. He was extremely respected within the industry as a songwriter, composer and singer. He was one of the very first Idols to be known for this songwriting and composing skills. As the main vocalist, Jonghyun is the reason why Taemin is the amazing singer and performer that he is today. Jonghyun taught Taemin everything he knows and you can feel Jonghyun's influence everytime Taemin sings, especially when he's performing with SHINee. SHINee are one of the top groups that are known for the fact that they all can do it all. They are a group of 5 amazing vocalists, 5 impressive dancers, 5 visuals, 5 rappers, 5 top actors, and 5 of the most talented and unique voices in all of Kpop. Once you get to know their voices you will always be able to pick them out of a crowd just by the sound of their voice. Most fans (SHINee World or Shawol for short) will tell you we know who is speaking or singing within 1 second even with our eyes closed, with them standing in a crowd of screaming fans. Each of their voices are that unique -- there is no one with a voice like any of theirs. That is why they are "The Princes of Kpop". SHINee are known for their live vocals and amazing dancing. They are known as CD-quality singers because they sound just as good live, if not better, than they do recorded. SHINee always sings live. The ONLY thing they are not good at is lip syncing so they avoid it at all costs, so when you hear SHINee singing 95% of the time it will be live. It's a running joke between the fans and the members that when SHINee lip syncs you can tell because it's very obvious. Yes, over the years they have become better at lip syncing then they used to be, but now they have gained the reputation as the group that always sings live, so unless they are required to lip sync for a specific reason, what you will hear is live vocals. They have trained their entire career to build endurance and stamina in order to be able to sing live and sound flawless while performing extremely complex choreography for more than 3 hours in concert. SHINee set the standard. That is why they are so highly respected among their peers. It is literally referred to as the SHINee standard. It's the standard all other groups strive to reach.

SHINee are the idols of most of today's idols. Their vocal's are amazing, their solo stuff is awesome, all of them are solo artists. Taemin the youngest auditioned at 14 and is known as the MJ of Korea for his dancing. Their vocal's are what draws me to them and their music. As someone mentioned they tragically lost their lead singer Jonghyun in 2017, It was Jonghyun's voice that drew me to the group. His amazing talent as a songwriter and singer blew me away and I've loved and supported SHINee ever sense. SHINee set the bar high for K-pop groups that followed them. To know SHINee as one you must know Jonghyun as well, One of the best Kpop singers :D (link Below). The way you explain the layers of vocal harmonies in this song made the singers sounds great pulling off this kind of harmony is not as easy as we listened. If we put it in a sheet we will probably see how the bass worked hard to balance the tenor and the mid vocal which is the baritone, and there is also certain part where the bass too hit the same note where the others are in. Simply it's a SHINee's thing. Great reaction 👍

Wow, I really liked your analysis. Atlantis was an instant like for me - I love the drive this song has, which makes me feel energetic and love the harmonies, especially when you have such great vocalists like SHINee their harmonies sound super satisfying. Could you please brake down Taemin’s Advice? (Taemin is a member of SHINee with a huge solo career). Advice is a very unique song, fast paced, with classically sounding piano, which works as a driving force of the song and very interesting vocals and mix of rap-singing. What’s interesting is the song was kept in original key (which was for a female singer), but Taemin’s vocal rage is very wide and he was able to sing in that original key and I think it gives the song an extra flare. Would be great to hear your thoughts on this song!

Thank you so much for your analysis! As someone who is clueless about producing, your explanations are very interesting and put down in an easy way to understand, which I appreciate! This really makes me applaud the people behind the music. I really love this song and I agree that they were able to sing comfortably in higher registers; their vocals are truly amazing! Finally, SHINee arrived at the professional house! You'll enjoy them a lot. Please try some their live performances, if you'd like to have a look. Even though you're more into music analysis, their live vocal would give some different angles in KPOP. As they've been in this industry for 13yr, they've also evolved a lot over the years. I could recommend tons immediately, but I'll leave it to you. Hope you enjoy it.
