History Summarized: Hong Kong

Sometimes small corners of the map can have outsized effects on the surrounding world. Hong Kong is undoubtedly one of History's greatest examples of big things coming from small beginnings. If you're curious about Hong Kong's current political situation, there's no better place to start than at the beginning.

It's the politicisation of human life. Every aspect of life in China belongs to the state, and is essentially on lease to the population with the government free to retract access to it at any time for any reason. Speech? Money? Property? When I told people I come from Macau, the most likely respond is “I haven’t heard of it or where is that”. I think it surprises many people to know just how much influence China's had on the west that their governments will never admit to. Even growing up I wasn't allowed to know that tea wasn't from Britain until it became a little too obvious that tea was only able to be imported to the country from China "of all places" and for some reason Britain needed to war with that country just to secure those tea imports. But even then I was taught that "black" tea was somehow some kind of evolution of the type of teas that the orientals drank.

This may be apocryphal but one of my favourite stories of symbolism is about the opium war and dragons. During the war, a brand new iron-clad steam powered British war ship, clashed with several Chinese ships and won handily. The symbolism involved is the flags. The British ship flew the St George's cross (as well as the Union Jack). Whereas, the Chinese ships flew under the banner of a dragon. For those unfamiliar with St George, he's famous for allegedly slaying a dragon.

Timothy Wei Uh no, because the CSA was never recognised and was then defeated in the American Civil War. Taiwan is recognised by other nations and de facto exists to everyone outside of China. Ask anyone outside of your bubble and they’ll say that Taiwan is independent, regardless of what China thinks.

@Timothy Wei No, you do not seem to understand that while the PRC says that Taiwan is its own (Chinese Taiping), literally no one else believes this. Almost every other nation as well as its people know Taiwan is its own country and laugh at how petty China is in terms of its foreign policy to 'reunite the motherland'. PRC and ROC are two distinct entities that exist side-by-side and not as one.

Could you do a look at the rise and fall of various political ideologies pretty please? I figure that would make an interesting series, but monetising certain view points might be tricky...
