History Summarized: Augustus Versus the Assassins

Check out the Remastered edition of the Age of Augustus series: • History RE-Summarized:...
HISTORY Summarized: Julius Caesar: • History Summarized: Ju...
SHAKESPEARE Summarized: Julius Caesar: • Shakespeare Summarized...
Come on a journey from Rome being a complete clusterfork in the aftermath of Caesar's Assassination to Rome being reconciled from said clusterfork by entering into another clusterfork, and ultimately standing on the edge of what will inevitably turn into a Republic-ending clusterfork.
Fun times.
SLIGHT CORRECTION: I misidentified Octavian's father as having the same name: "Gaius Octavianus". His name was actually "Gaius Octavius". Totally changes the game, doesn't it? Roman names are kind of the worst.

But even so it's sad to read about how he was belittled by his allies and by everyone else. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Aemilius_Lepidus_(triumvir)#Reputation Blue: "If you got the sense that Lepidus didn't matter, it's okey. +Ryan Ratchford That was because Augustus was never actually Emperor, as there was no such position in the Roman government at the time. Augustus _“became”_ Emperor by being granting a series of pre-existing positions and titles over the years until he effectively wielded dictatorial power, all the while referring to himself as _Princeps Civitatis_ (“First citizen of the state”).

Complicated series of actions taken to legitimate him is the answer. He found approval through military success, control of religion which was a public matter at the time, presenting himself as the saviour of the republic and the one who out an end to the civil wars people were super super sick of, taking pre existing charges (he was named consul for eleven years straight), being culturally influential thanks to Mecenate's club (which included Virgilius, Horace, etc.). And even after all of this he still had problems regard transferring all this personal power to a successor and basically Tiberius managed to rise to power just because the Senate thought it was the safest thing to do

When I grew up, I knew more about the Egyptians and Chinese than the Greeks due to them being more influential in pop culture, when in fact my first taste for history came from Books, total war and finally articles and videos like these.

Speaking of good ol' Octavian, is there any chance you'd ever be interested in talking about the revolts and Rome's encroachment into Germania around this era? There's a fascinating story there and quite possibly the worst military defeat Rome ever suffered, the Battle of Teutoborg Forest. Arminius/Hermann the German was unfortunately used as propaganda by the Third Reich and sadly his story was shunned after WWII. No one really knows about him anymore, but it's a ridiculously fun topic to read into. Love your videos, can't wait for the next ones.

According to Appian, Octavian was sick and had to be carried to the front in a palanquin, but towards the end of the battle, neither his own soldiers nor his enemies could find him. Rumours spread around like mad. The opposing soldiers claimed that they had killed him, and some senators spread the word that he had gone hiding in the swamp for three days (although highly unlikely) to wait for the end of the battle. :D I totally agree with you, that he messed up big time in Philippi :D

Augustus is yet another example of the briliantnes of Caesar. Julius did what most conquerors/great leaders fail to do, and left behind a capable heir.

I love this! My only complaint really, and I know this is an Augustus video, is that Lepidus was pretty much Julius Caesar's bff... so cut the guy a little slack. He did kind of get shafted by the other two triumvirs. I like to think it's because of the three he was the least crazy.

Pretty good stuff. I thought at this point Lepidus also had Spain at his disposal at this time, and it was only after Octavian took Sicily from Pompey (after Lepidus tried to make a power play and losing Spain for it) that he became became irrelevant.

If you are wondering how the Roman Republic began to fall. I recommend The Storm Before the Storm by Mike Duncan. It cover the weakening of the Roman Republic that allowed Julies Caesar and the rest of triumvirate to come to power.

Augustus is probably one of the most polarizing figures from Roman history. Also, we shouldn't count out his wife, who is among the most powerful women ever. I'm excited to hear the next parts.

Antony & Caesar were actually related, too- no movie or doco ever mentions it; his mother was Julia Antonia- her father was Lucius Julius Caesar & he had a son of the same name, who was a supporter of his cousin, Caesar- he was one of the moderates who endeavoured to avoid civil war between the Senate & Antony, in the aftermath of Caesar's assassination- he also had a son named Lucius, who died at Thapsus, on the opposing side. Pretty sad.

I've always wanted to ask Blue how accurate is the HBO series Rome, from a historical viewpoint that is,( and yes I'm aware that the two main characters of the series aren't real, maybe, I don't know) because when I've watched both seasons(despite the second season, which is also the last, feeling rather rushed in terms of story) I've had some nitpicks: for example most if not all the people who were in battle seemed to be wearing leather armor, which confused me a little because from what I've heard roman troops wore plate armor, but who knows maybe I haven't been paying enough attention. P.S: This show was great. I recommend it to everyone who isn't afraid to see blood, gore and/or actual nudity. Also it is a real shame that it couldn't last longer than two seasons.

Lucius Vorenus and Titus Pullo are names actually pulled from the Commentaries on the Gallic Wars, Chapter 44 in Book 5. They were part of the Legion XI Claudia, not the XIII Gemina, though. So, yeah. Real names, but fictionalized versions of them.

I swear this is like a reboot of a franchise. Like the last one ended with Caesar's death and the show ended but then suddenly. Coming this summer, Rome: The next generation. Featuring Caesar's Great Nephew and Pompey's son. They even decide to rehash the whole triumvirate plot which eventually comes apart resulting in a civil war between two of the triumvirs.

Have you read Adrian Goldsworthy's biography of Augustus? It's well worth it. Speaking of Goldsworthy ,he also made a biography of Antony and Cleopatra. I don't know if you went deeper into the Ptolemaic reality show after your last video, but Goldsworthy has the details. Although you probably will still be clueless on how Cleopatra managed to come out of THAT clusterfuck.

Rome initially had hundreds of years of slow expansion and political stability. After the Punic wars Rome expanded too greatly and too quickly. Rich senate families became even richer monopolizing most land in Italy and most wealth gained from the wars. The government and army were set up to basically be a power in Italy and Italy alone with citizen farmers as its military and social backbone. These massive wars lead these men to find their homes in ruin or bought up by massive plantations. This laid the foundation for the constant push for land reform by populists looking for power, and the professionalization of the army, who were loyal to their generals and not the state.

Chances are decent that he and Cleopatra don't partner as he would have nothing to give her/she has nothing to gain by it. She chose Antony over Octavian mainly because Antony ruled the East and Egypt fell under his purview. That said, I'm not entirely certain that if Octavian had been given the East that things would've gone better there as Octavian was trying super hard to become Caesar's son and there's Cleopatra over there with Caesar's actual son and ruling Egypt with him no less.

Sad thing about lepidus being sneered at by history, is that for alle records we have, he was EXTREMELY capable in nearly everything he did. Ceasar once chose him over anthony to govern Rome (after lepidus had proven himself over and over again in battle for ceasar), he provided Rome with food during his reign over northern Africa, never really lost a battle and died of old age (which let's be honest, is a victory on itself in late reuplican days..). The most likely reason for Octavian to have ousted him so quickly was because he actually was MORE competent than anthony , who had a habit of messing things up for himself every few years
