That's very generous to give me the translation! I've put the first one up as you can see for part one of the series. Many thanks for all the work (and I know how much that is)!
terribly useful!thank you so much for uploading this!
I had a drama final last month and the day before it, I was cramming (because I didn't study...) and even looked this up. It was really late at night and I was falling asleep... and I ended up closing the video, only watching a little bit more than a minute. It turns out that I watched that part I didn't know I had to study. Got an A+ :D

Suja Nayeem Hasan you're welcome
This video is such a great opportuninty to know some more details about theatre. The film is useful and interesting. Thank you so much for this video. And as I've read in one of the commentaries below the video, Greek people are really fortunate as they are the heirs of the great nation, that created the theatre.
Good to hear the Greek names pronounced correctly.

yeah, but only in this video...
the entirety of this plunged me straight into the uncanniest of valleys and I no longer wish to take world literature
Theatre and ritual both employ similar means: music, dance, spectacle, masks, costumes, speech, performers, audience, stage, makeup, etc. They have similar themes: pleasure, power, duty. They have similar production methods: a technical director to make sure things run smoothly.
is there any outline of the history in every episode?
please use cc's (close captions)
Thank you for posting this wonderful documentary! Incredible, except for the music that is from a much more later period and from India
@idonperg - you're right! thanks for the support
kind words!
these vids are great! the clips are great too, but is there any place you can watch the complete Agamemnon?
STOP making the music so loud. I keep having to turn my volume up to hear the woman and then turn the music down because IT'S SO LOUD.

hi Elvi, there is no summary of my vids on internet. I can only refer to the book of the great theatre historian of the late twentieth century Oscar Brockett, and to Mark Damen's syllabus (see link in info box)
Very good! But can you tell me what is the song @ 6:23 ?

It's very fair that you respond to my comments! Indeed, the machine translation by cc's is often desperately bad. Keep the video's on YT. Perhaps some time I will use your translation, haha, you can't object to that.
@krakus5813 hi, thanx for kind words. Music from 500 BC?? The music is from a Japanese composer (10:04). Check YT:"Arion Original SoundTrack - 01. Hades, Lord Of The Underworld ~ Main Theme (Joe Hisaishi)"
@joemoonraven thanks for your support! and yes that BC - BCE question, BC is not a short form of BCE, as you suggest. perhaps this distincion has more to do with political correctness (see Wikipedia and google e.g. "The Wikipedia BC/AD Controversy") . In any case the dating scheme remains the same for both abbreviations. & sorry, I didn't use "after death".
@heftybefty2 - check Dailymotion: Aeschylus Agamemnon (1983 TV)
well, I think it depends how broad you define 'stage', I would say 'stage' is more the actual acting place/ground. when you're off-stage, you are behind the skene/scenery, not so much: behind the stage. however, it is not a big deal!
HI! thanks a lot for these really usefull videos on western theatre history. I used these as inspiration for a theatre piece on the audience role. I still can't find the credits (full name etc.) Who made this??

Hi, I'm a scenographer and I'm realizing a space dedicated to the study of theatre for schools. I would use about 15 seconds of this beautifull documentary. Is it possible? Is there any problem of royalty?

yes, but in old greek skene means tent or hut, 4:48
you can even translate the text to 'Norsk'
Dear Producers. Thanks for the good documentary. I would like to translate the subtitles of the first episode into Arabic. Is it possible?, will you merge the translation into your subtitles? Thanks

+Sebaie El-Sayyed - a little late, but a translation into Arabic would be nice, and I would merge it into the subtitles (if possible). if you mail me your address I can send you the subtitles in English.
good luck!
really liked the collaged videos! however, the womans voice is somewhat slumberous... thanks for the vid!
Great job ...What is the copyright status on this production? I am developing resources for schools in Queensland Australia. Can I include this for students to view? It would be downloaded and included in offline resources. What attributions will need to be made if so.Thanks Carmel

proud to be greek!
@betapicts I mean the music with sitar and bansuri, that´s hindustanic music. Then you have also music of charlie parker, etc. Of course that there are only reconstructions of greek music, but it´s obvious that it has nothing to do with the images. Do you have more documentaries? Please post them. Thank you very much for sharing it

HI. I've just read your two comments on my channel, and I've just know the source of these videos (I received them downloaded a year ago), just didn't know about your channel. I've included a link to your videos and, of course, an acknowledgment to you. I've tested CC,s translation to spanish on your videos and unfortunately it don't work, and the final translation is a mess. Any way, I'll remove your videos from my channel if you ask. Please, apologize for any inconvenience. Best regards. J
nice to hear :-) ß
@courtneygregoryx01 - thats really nice!
Lot of options. Lot of free choice.
This is the most interesting documentary, and I can't hear it! Nooooooooooo...
What are the credits for this film and the other sections in this series? (Who produced it, narrated it, what is the name of the documentary/film and the date?) Basically, I want to find out the source for the film.

Shouldn't this series be called a 'History of Western European Theatre', I feel sure there were theatrical production in many other countries from earliest times, many of which may well have influenced what we now have as theatre.
I'm doing a 2 year course in acting. I have to read a big book on it. Lol straight to KZread instead. God I hope my brain retains this information otherwise its back to the 300 page book.
Theatre these days is a secularized artform tbh

In the 6th cent BC women were not allowed anymore on the stage of Greek Theatre - 0:51, according to Brockett (and many others). Female roles were played by men. Only much later (150-100 BC ) slave women played minor female characters. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Representation_of_women_in_Athenian_tragedy nctheatre.com/blog/women-theatre-historical-look
same here man which sucks.
Dionysius was not a Greek God. It is a common knowledge that he was Thracian god (just like Ares, Apollo or Apollon to name a few) and got adopted and adapted from the incoming Hellenistic tribes on the Balkan Peninsula. The practice of adopting and adapting from the Hellenes does not stop only with the religion; they do adopt the Phoenician alphabet as well as signs from the Minoan writing system. Isn’t it surprising that the land that was predominantly occupied by the Thracians are till this day preserving and practicing celebratory rituals (Young Wine, Pruning the Vines, Kukeri) linked with the god of wine Dionysius, while these are nonexistent in Greece?!

So beta
When the theater changed that's when the rabbis had taken over the Greek Empire and started their sacrifices before that women would be allowed and participate. It's a talmudic practice to separate the women from the men. The Greeks always involved women in everything they did. This is a sign that the rabbis had taken over the Greek Empire

“In the sixth century BC, the celebration became formalized and ritualized, women were not allowed anymore to participate.” Jews have been present in Greece since at least the fourth century BC.

betapicts the dates these rabbis put down are all wrong I can tell you that's a fact. The Greeks always involved women in everything they did even when they built the pyramids in Egypt they made goddesses. That only has continued in Greece. Not no Arab or Jew Nation

Dear Harry, listen, there were no jews in Greece when theatre emerged. By the way did the Greek build pyramids in Egypt?
