History of the Yu-Gi-Oh Card Game - Part 2 (IT'S POT OF GREED TIME!)

Ойындар

Something I forgot to mention in the video - Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters II: Dark Duel Stories is a different game than what was called "Dark Duel Stories" in the United States. The "Dark Duel Stories" released in the west is actually Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters III.
Welcome to the History of the Yu-Gi-Oh Card Game! In this series, we'll delve into the history of the game by starting at the very beginning. Check out Part 1 if you haven't, and stay tuned for more - we've got more historical Yu-Gi-Oh content coming soon, including vintage pack openings and more.

    Watching this and the history of Yugioh tcg is fascinating because there are obvious differences between the two

    The main difference is that the TCG released tons of cards very quickly (in an effort to catch up to the OCG) so things progressed much faster. Many decks and cards had a chance to be viable in the OCG but never got the chance to shine in the TCG. This also means that some cards were missed and either never came out or took a long time to actually come out (Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon being the most notable case). This is all stuff I'll touch on more in the future.

    Goat format but allowing duel monsters cards that didn't come to tcg by then is actually the EXACT format me and a few friends have begun playing over webcam haha. Definitely always looking for more players who are down to play! We don't follow a list too strictly and none of us have really good decks.

    Incidentally, I want it to be added that a lot of early cards came from the video games, which had a rudimentary fusion mechanic. I looked it up, and apparently Fusionist was made by fusing any Fairy with any Beast monster that had less ATK than it, and Rare Fish was made by fusing any Beast and any Fish/Aqua monster with less ATK than it. I guess that when they adapted those cards into the game, they just picked two monsters that _could_ be used to make them. And then they didn't check to see whether Fusionist was already a Fusion itself.

    THIS, even if he spoke of the videogame, he just talked about it as a sidenote without realizing how important that was to the early card design. the early boosters are taken straight from the game. that's why fusions are so weak, why there are so many recolored monsters, and also why ritual summoning is so different in the games, as it came out months earlier than in paper.

    It's worth noting that Crush Card Virus in the manga was even more complex, since you had to have the monster be destroyed by battle before the virus could activate. It seemed to be kind of like an equip card.

  • @jeandehuit5385

    @jeandehuit5385

    Which really plays into the 'virus' aspect a bit more; your opponent gets 'infected' by inadvertently coming into contact w/ a 'contagious' monster. And including that aspect of the card would have made it more balanced anyway! Goes to show that Konami has been poorly adapting anime/manga cards since the beginning (tho. this is hardly the 1st or best example of that).

    Honestly, it's not that surprising that the Dark Duel Stories promos came out so early to those who played the video games. I remember Eternal Duelist Soul having all these cards, as well as stuff like Vorse Raider and Ring of Destruction, back when the main card pool only went up to half of TCG Pharaoh's Servant (i.e. OCG Curse of Anubis).

    I'd probably play Yu-Gi-Oh more if the OGSB rules were still existent, perhaps with the addition of ritual cards. Nowadays it's too complex, with the myriad card types and microscopic text effects hurting my brain 🙈 i remember my first decks, the rulebook said "Ritual summoning coming soon" 😂
