As much as I adore some of the bigger channels, this episode is proof positive that yall are one of (if not) the best. The section covering January 62 was a haunting, honest, beautiful eulogy, and Garrett's delivery conveys so much of the emotion in an article that was written 160 years ago. Then adding your take on the legacy of the man himself combined to almost choke me up. Keep up the wonderful work gentlemen.

It’s funny that we shoot the replicas and think they had such crappy guns back then,… Until a real one is brought out and then we realize what happens when companies really cared about quality.

I didn’t know the 1849 Wells Fargo was better known as the “Old Model Police” until now. Those must have been very marginal armament, even for the 1850’s. Even the New Model in .36 is no powerhouse.

The comparison between the replica and the original pocket model at the end is amazing! The original performed so much better I am surprised that the Caps are too small because number 10 caps on my to replicas usually fit tight and I have to kind of cram them on their the smoothness of the original pistol was truly amazing.
According to Colt, I own an 1862 Collt Navy cased 36 cal made in 1861. Yes, it is scarce and precious.
I've watched all your videos on Colt cap n ball revolvers loved um great job thanks. I'm looking forward to the cartridge revolvers specially the conversions.

Did you know with a very slight bend in the trigger guard. You can install a 1877 back strap on a 1849-62. You end up with a birds head grip 49. I realized this a year ago. And I’m sure some gunsmiths in the past discovered this as well. Makes for a nice snub nose once done. This works on a colt and uberti.

I bought Remington brand, #11 percussion caps , yesterday in St. Louis, MO. Cabela's can ship nation wide. You will have to pay a steep price, for the hazard item fee. It has been 13 months since they had any.
I don't remember when or where I heard it but I've heard that you could stiffen up the hammer spring if you put a shim under the spring by sacrificing a set of feeler gauges and playing with different thicknesses until the spring is heavy enough. Do you know if that's true
@Real11BangBang

Great series, enjoyed it very much. Just curious about the song played in the back ground , what is the name of it and by whom. It is sort of a shame that the period of 1849 to 1865 cap/ball revolvers lasted only for such a short period. You have to wonder if the the 49/51 had been introduced in the 1830s and its affect on the plains /Texas westward expansion. Good Job , well done

I have the same problem with reproduction Single Action Army clones. Everyone wants light hammer springs but the best and smoothest action I ever experienced in my life was with a 1958 Colt SAA, and I really wish companies like Wolff made extra powered mainsprings for colt clones.

Me being an 18h century re-enactor of a long hunter I am very familiar with how they carried there stuff to make their guns go bang. The ambiguous pouch and Horn.
What a wonderful and informative video. I did not realize that the rarity of finding an original, unmodified survivor would rival the rarity of my Ward-Burton rifle/carbine collection. I wish I could find more history on my 4 1/2" barrel original and matching number 1862 Police model. I contacted Colt archives and they only have historical information if these were sent back and modified at the factory. My Colt has not been modified and so I am wondering if my gun may have been a military order which may have further information? The serial number of my gun is 3281 which makes it in the earlier runs of 1861, perhaps even in the lifetime of Samuel Colt. Is there any way I might be able to find further information on this?

hmmmm something must be up because all the original 62 or 65s i have handled including the one in this video have a cylinder almost 1/8th of an inch shorter then the original 51 or 61 navy's

@@Real11BangBang You are right. I measured again the cylinders, this time with a caliper, and the 1851 has a 43.03 mm cylinder, 40.5 for the 1862 and 40.3 for the 1865. But 3 mm (or 1/8") doesn't make a big difference regarding the maximum powder charge.
OK Basically, I don't like colts, how they look mostly. Then I hate that pin, that holds gun together. But, this little thing. I love it! I wouldn't buy one, cause I don't need it. But it's still good looking thingy

Maybe some may be unattractive , but the grips are not comfortable. The remmington's grip can be uncomfortable for those with big hands.
Well I broke down and bought a 1862 pocket Navy on sale at midwayusa (Fed 2024). It turned out to be the worse of any cap n ball revolvers I've own since 1969. The cylinder wouldn't turn because of a huge burr on the frame the arbor is lose the hand is too short and the cylinder doesn't index right. The nipples were so tight I ended up havging to drill one out to used a easy out on so I can use slixshot. This isn't the fault of Midwayusa they didn't manufacture it. For the cost of these small uberti revolvers you'd think they'd do a better job of manufacturing them. My 1862 pocket police is an excellent revolver with a bit more work i did than a full size Uberti. When my new hand shows up I'll deal with the lose arbor.

Nice information and I will be subbing. Got a few questions for you if you dont mind First, I am confused as Currently Uberti List a Police model for sale but it does not say Pocket Police is what they currently list in fact a Pocket Police ? It is a five shot Is there a difference between a Police and a Pocket Police? I thought I heard you say that some of the Pocket Police were made with a 6 shot cylinder ? If so where can I buy one of the Pocket Police with a 6 shot cylinder ? Is there a difference between a Uberti or a Pietta police or pocket Police as far as Aunthenticy ? Quality ? I already have a Remington new army in both 8 inch and 5 1/2 Barrel length and other than having to take both apart and smoothem up am satisfied with the Quality of Pietta so far. Just wanting a lighter cap and ball for woods walking but something with more power than a 32. Thank you for taking the time to read and answer my questions.

How do I find a possible military record for my 1862 Pocket Police?
@Real11BangBang
Жыл бұрын
Just so you know finding any info on an exact colt pistol that is not an 1860 army or an 1851 navy and was made from 1861-1864 is vary duanting task but you never know you may get lucky. First thing to do is to look up your serial number and find out if it is a war year production. next if it is a war year production try to get it lettered by the colt archives. now this will cost $100 and if it is pre 1864 will more then likely only come back with just a letter saying we dont know anything but production year but it has to be done as a first step. They will have any military records that may exist. Next get a copy of the book Colt's Pocket '49: It's evolution including the Baby Dragoon & Wells Fargo. there is a very small chance your 1862 may fall into one of the serial number ranges mentioned there. this wont be a guarantee but may put it in range. if you. can find out where your gun was sent but it does not have any links to the federal army try the local state militias of the year it was made. i wish i could be more helpfull but the pocket police is honestly one of the hardest handguns to do research for during the war years.

@@Real11BangBang My #3281 is only 139 numbers away from presentation Colt #3420 which was presented to Major Charles T. Baker at a time when Colt was creating a regiment fully armed with his products in his hometown of Hartford. So I am thinking it is possible that my Pocket Police may have been part of the 5th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry was originally composed of companies formed in response to that state’s governor’s call for volunteers in April 1861. These units were disbanded after Lincoln’s call for 75,000 troops in May 1861, and reorganized themselves as the First Regiment, Colt’s Revolving Rifles, with famed gun maker Samuel Colt as their prospective colonel. The new regiment was quartered on the grounds of the Colt Patent Fire Arms Company at Hartford
