History of the Eucharist

When we look through history, we see that the celebration of the Eucharist in the Catholic Church contains not only many varied expressions, but a faith and theology that seems to have evolved-and continues to evolve-over two millennia.

With 2000 years of history, it is too complicated on some part for me. But I do believe, the Eucharist is truly the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. Never doubted. I love my Catholic faith! Coming from an ex Muslem. 🙏💚

They say a priest has the power of God to change the bread and wine in the body and blood of Christ . WE saved believers know that there is no call for a priest in the new Testament Church . under the new Covenant . there are no more sacrifices . when it was given to them it was a wafer and wine . The Catholic Church has been living a fabricated lie for sense the second century . That is why it is an apostate Church and a cult .

Does that mean, Jay, that you have a Catholic background? I believe there is a commonality in the Roman Catholic Mass, regardless of where you are, that has a special appeal. We, at Mass, are ALL experiencing the universiality, whereas, in the Protestant tradition, the local congregation and pastor directs the service. There can be very little universiality even among the same denomination.

The Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist and that the Mass is Calvary offered in an un-bloody manner. Growing up as a Jew, we celebrated Pesach, (Passover) each year, just as the Last Supper was a celebration of the Passover. In the Passover we are taught by the Rabbis from the times before Jesus, that by observing the Seder, (the order of the Passover ritual) we can no longer say, I am remembering what God did in that place for my forefathers, but we must say, I am remembering what God has done for me. That to participate in this act almost three thousand years ago by other people being saved out of Egypt, I too am a participant. God makes the Exodus present here for me, and those who are with me. The term which Jesus used in the Greek, often translated as in memory of is, Anmensis. It can mean to remember something from the past, but in the context of the Seder, and also in the Mass, it means to make a past event present now. So when I am at Mass (and I prefer the Byzantine or Traditional Latin Mass over the Ordinary Form, but as the Mass is the action of Christ through His priesthood, all Masses are of equal and infinite value, as they are the same sacrifice as Calvary) I know that God is allowing us to step out of time, and recline at the Seder which was the Last Supper, to stand or rather kneel at Calvary, and to witness the resurrected Jesus. The manner may differ, the date on my calendar may differ, but by God's grace, I am there, He brings it to me.

Hi Ashwith, I don't believe that there is a single document answering the question, but theologians like Sts. Thomas Aquinas and Bonaventure wrote individual answers to this question. And yes, it is amazing how similar things are to the beginning. This is a product of the Second Vatican Council's reforms, reading documents like the Didache, Apostolic Tradition, and Justin Martyr's First Apology to recover some aspects that were lost.

Twice in my life, (1980's & 2021), I reconsidered the Catholic teaching of Communion as the body and blood of Christ. (You only spoke about eucharistic in this video.) I studied the Bible to see what it truly taught, rather than just accept what I'd been taught as a child. My conclusion, both times? Looking at the gospels, Last Supper accounts, John chapter 6 & 1 Corinthians 11, plus other Scriptures, I could see no other sound Teaching than the Transubstantiation/Mysterion teaching practiced by the Catholic and Orthodox churches. Likewise, initially practiced by Lutherans and Anglicans, then reduced theologically to less miraculous in later centuries. Presently, I attend a Nazarene church, but am disheartened by their watering down of Eucharist and communion to something only symbolic. I wrote about my findings in my book, Tossing Mountains, citing modern-day miracles. Then, I went further, beyond the New Testament, and found many, many saints from the 2nd to 5th centuries who clearly understood Eucharist to be miraculously Jesus' presence. Ignatius to Augustus and beyond, the roots of Christianity and His church began with a foundation of Christ's body and blood in that common bread and wine. May God bless you always and all ways in your ministry.

What is it meant to be, bread, a round wafer, cracker ? What is it ? 2. How often should it be taken ? 3. What is the recipe ? 4. Should it be grape juice or wine ? 5. Who's hands made this bread, cracker or wafer ? 6. How does it affect and enhance the spiritual man ? 7. What goes in the body, does it not pass out into the toilet ? 8. What happens if you cant get hold of this bread, cracker or wafer, especially with this lockdown ? 9. Who is eligible to partake ? 10. Is it open to everyone ?

I will do my best to give you answers, that are congruent with Catholic theology. 1) Prior to consecration, it is just bread. It is unleavened, since this is what the Jews at at passover ... and it's what Christ first confected into His body. So we do the same. It is round, though I don't think there is a requirement that it be round. It is not a cracker, though how a cracker and unleavened bread differs comes down to definitional matters. 2) The faithful may receive daily. But you are limited to a maximum of 2 receptions/day (a second reception must be as a part of the Mass). Most faithful just receive once a week on Sunday. 3) Recipe: I have no idea. 4) You must use wine, along with a small amount of water in the chalice. No grape juice. I don't know if you have to use red wine ... but I've only ever seen red wine used (I have served at Mass for many, many years and have only seen red). Note: both the body of Christ (appearing as the host) and the blood of Christ (appearing as wine) are both the body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ. So you need not receive both. One is sufficient. So if you're an alcoholic, you can simply receive the host. 5) I don't know. There are companies that produce them, and the parish buys them. 6) Catholics believe that all sacraments (and the Eucharist, chief among them) is a means by which God dispenses His grace. As such, it isn't merely symbolic ... it's efficacious. Moreover, in addition to receiving His grace, you are also united spiritually to all of your brothers and sisters in Christ, as you're all physically partaking of Christ. Receiving the Eucharist is a means by which Christ feeds/builds His body, the Church. This answer is far, far too short/incomplete. But it gives you a sense of the answer. 7) Catholics believe that Christ is physically present, body, blood, soul, and divinity, in the Eucharist. Once the physical entity (the host) is broken down and incorporated into the person's body, Christ ceases to be present in the same way. Sure, His grace is still with you but He isn't physically present anymore. Based on our understanding of biology, digestion is largely complete after 15 minutes (approximately). 8) The faithful are required to receive the Eucharist at least once per year ... though most receive it much more frequently. However, this sort of rule can be suspended by the local bishop, if necessary. 9) Any baptized Catholic, who has (a) received the sacrament of confession (such that a worthy reception is possible) and (b) received the proper training at their parish. 10) No, it is not. Anyone wanting to receive the Eucharist must be received into the Church and obtain the necessary training. I hope this helps. Pax Christi!

There are a number of inconsistencies in this video. Let me share 1: as a result of the 4th Latern Council's decree that the faithful must receive the Eucharist at least once a year was the result of the Mass become more elaborate, solemn and private? That is disconnected. The two don't follow. Also, using the word "evolve" implies something different than the notion of the development of doctrine.

How is that disconnected? The Mass became more elaborate and people felt unworthy to receive and thus avoided the Eucharist. The Church, realizing that the Eucharist is a gift that people should not avoid, mandated that it be received to avoid this problem of laypeople feeling unworthy.

COMMENT FROM THE 'BORN-AGAIN CATHOLIC': From the very structure of the mass with the Liturgy of the Word coming first, and in addition to good sense and scripture itself, I believe that receiving the Eucharist is a lot like signing a contract with Christ to live "by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God." If one has no intention to know and study the Word of God in public and in private when one can easily do so, signing this contract is a very big super sin. It is the very worst of lies. It constitutes the king of all mortal sins because it easily meets all three conditions of a mortal sin and then some.

I'm a Catholic with a spiritual gift from God. The gift is called discerning of spirits. It's one of the charism of holy spirits as listed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. This gift allows me to see in the spiritual realm. One of the abilities granted by this gift is I can discern if an object is blessed or cursed. When a host is consecrated by a priest, I would discern presence of holiness in the host. When someone has taken the eucharist, I would discern a sense of holiness from that person. Jesus is indeed present in the eucharist. We are sanctified and in communion with Christ after we have received the Holy communion. Hopefully this spiritual insight helps anyone who's reading to understand the supernatural aspect of the Eucharist.

The only thing that concerns me about all this and can place doubt in my mind over the whole thing is how we can expect less bright people to grasp it ( i don't mean that in any horrible way, just being 100% honest as there is a spectrum of intelligence across the population and I know plenty of people that with even the best will and teachers in the world would never have the upstairs capacity to follow that.) I don't mean people with intellectual disability but probably at least half the general population. If we can't explain it at all to them how can we expect them to understand it or believe it, would god really leave behind something so hard to grasp, as I can honestly see how people ended up arguing about the mouse question, it is kind of inevitable. This is an honest question?

can I be honest, if anyone is thinking about becoming Catholic but is skeptical, they need to watch your videos and just talk to you. A lot of my Catholic friends blindly submit to every single thing the church has done ever without considering its rough history, which makes me concerned. You, however, are willing to admit that the church's history has not been perfect, and yet you still stay in it because you know the true reason for why the church was created in the first place, which was to bring God's kingdom closer to earth. In fact, Catholics admitting troubles of the church made me wanna come back to Catholicism more, not less, because they are being HONEST and not being like "look at us we're so perfect!" After all, you don't leave Jesus because of Judas...

The Eucharist is not supported in scripture...in fact, it's blasphemous to eat and drink the Lord. Jesus said , when discussing this part of scripture of taking communion, that his words were spiritual not physical. The Catholic Church has made them physical. And in fact, this practice may originate in old paganism. Look it up.

He never said it was spiritual, not physical. If you’re going to tell people to look it up, you can’t *make it up.* What he says is “unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood, you have no life within you.” At no point does he say this is spiritual or metaphorical. You can interpret that way if you like, but don’t put words in Jesus’ mouth.

No where in the bible does it teach what the RCC teaches about the eucharist. No where. The whole teaching about Jesus' blood is that he had to shed his blood for the remission of our sins, literally, and that communion was for a time to remember that sacrifice. The blood and body of the Lord was not taught by Jesus and the apostles in scripture to be some hocus pocus done by some priest that literally turned the bread and wine into flesh and blood. I'll look up the passage I'm referring to and give you the reference. @@BreakingInTheHabit

@@BreakingInTheHabithe doesn’t need to say “ this is only spiritual” John 6 he’s mostly is speaking on how he is the bread the bread of life. He said in remembrance of him. Also!! Is it actually Jesus in the Euhrius every Sunday? Or is it the Holy Spirit? Since Jesus also said he will come a second time but until then he sent the Holy Spirit.

God never leaves us but sometimes we leave God. We repent, we confess, we do the penance prescribed by the priest and we go on. Sometimes it happens that when we have not command any sins for awhile we begin to lose the sense of the presence of God---Jesus experienced this when He said "My God, my God, shy hast thou abandoned me". This God does to strengthen and purify us, to help us depend on Him and Him alone, and not on His favors. St. John of the Cross calls this the dark night of the soul. Don't become troubled during these times; wait patiently and God's peace and happiness will return.

Why does the Eucharist make me feel empty, or even angry? Why does the church feel like a waste of time? Why don't its priests perform miracles like Jesus?

“And when the disciples said, 'O Jesus son of Mary, is your Lord able to bring down for us a feast from heaven?' He said, 'Fear God, if you are believers.'“ They said, “We wish to eat from it, so that our hearts may be reassured, and know that you have told us the truth, and be among those who witness it.” Jesus son of Mary said, “O God, our Lord, send down for us a table from heaven, to be a festival for us, for the first of us, and the last of us, and a sign from You; and provide for us; You are the Best of providers.” God said, “I will send it down to you. But whoever among you disbelieves thereafter, I will punish him with a punishment the like of which I never punish any other being.” (The Qur’an, Sūrah 5:112-115) • “O People of the Scripture! Do not exaggerate in your religion, and do not say about God except the truth. The Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, is the Messenger of God, and His Word that He conveyed to Mary, and a Spirit from Him. So believe in God and His messengers, and do not say, “Three.” Refrain-it is better for you. God is only one God. Glory be to Him-that He should have a son. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and the earth, and God is a sufficient Protector.” (The Qur’an, 4:171)

Well didnt Jesus Said that it is his body and blood and to do it in memory of him? The apostles believe it and been doing it. Acts 2:42 “And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in BREAKING OF BREAD, and in prayers.” King James Version .
