History of Splinter Cell (2002 - 2019)

Ойындар

The full history of the Splinter Cell franchise. From the initial shadow stalking gameplay of 2002's Splinter Cell, to the 2018 downloadable bonus mission for Ghost Recon Wildlands. From someone who had never played the franchise and wanted to know a bit more: It felt a bit too much like all the reviews of all games glued together, and a few of them dragged for too long. It's the first time ever i wanted to fast forward in one of your videos, which is extremely surprising. Also, the historical and contextual information about the game's development or impact were not that strong or insider-y as other cases. Maybe this franchise doesn't have the most exciting history ever or not that much is known but... I'd shift the balance again towards this second angle.

In Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, when Lambert said "You can't get a medal for this", and Sam said "Medals don't help me sleep at night Lambert", it showed that Sam cares more about people and partially the mission than medals. I really like that line.

I played Chaos theory on a few different ports and if memory serves me right on the PS2 version the only way to get that coveted hundred% was to save the pilots, where as in the Xbox and PC port it didn't matter and was solely a personal juice without award or demerit for saving/not saving them. Pretty sure it was the same with the assassination of Dallas Tahl in Pandora Tommorow which I first played on Xbox then PS 2, where the Xbox version held no sway but the in the PS2 version if you didn't kill her you got at best 99% depending on how well you finished the mission. That's something I actually like about titles being on multiple ports, depending on which one you play the game can be mildly to wildly different in not only game play but content though can and does get pricey lol. Sometimes it's worth it other times not so much.

100% agree with this, specially now that MGS is done and Dishonored is on (I hope) a temporary hiatus, only Hitman and Deus Ex (although not so well as of late) are left to carry the torch for triple A stealth driven experiences. Sure there are great stealth hybrids, like Ghost Recon Wildlands that merge stealth and action gameplay well enough that it creates an interesting dynamic between the two. There just aren't enough fully stealth driven games anymore, and this trend could potentially mean now would be the perfect timing to reboot the franchise. I wish Ubisoft could pull a reboot as great as the one Santa Monica did with God of War, a boy can dream... BOY! I love them all, I still revisit them often. Chaos Theory was the best, but I liked the multiplayer from PT the absolute best. Double Agent was fun, but was probably my least favorite of the series. I played SC 1 through dozens and dozens of times, and I am one of those people that achieved the 100% marks in every gameplay style, and mission. Splinter Cell has been my all time favorite franchise, and I hope they make another. Conviction is still probably my go to for just logging in and filling my SC fix. Deniable Ops is still fun. Blacklist sucked me in for hours, and made me not quit until I unlocked, and mastered EVERYTHING. Im going to go play some more SC now.

Where you sneak into Emil's office, only for Emil to walk in on you? So quickly dart under the table and empty his safe whilst his back is turned. Then Fisher sneaks into Erica's quarters just as she walks in. I remember it fondly. Stealth done right.

First of all congrats for this video, it's well edited and well documented for those who want to discover and know more about the franchise. As a longtime hardcore fan I dream about a real return to the roots like the first four games, which are part of my favorite stealth games ever. But I really hope that the next Splinter Cell game won't be an open-world, it doesn't fit at all with stealth games in general and mostly with Splinter Cell's spirit. Open sandboxes (like the last Hitman game or MGS Ground Zeroes) would be the best for Splinter Cell. But those sandbox maps would need to have a lot of interactivity and life with numerous NPCs, some immersive-sim features, various paths, multiple infiltration and extraction points. It would have a great potential of replayability in my opinion. There are so much ideas and modes they could add to those open sandboxes to make Splinter Cell an efficient "game as a service" by influencing the core gameplay mechanics and the way maps are filled and designed. Because I'm sure that they are struggling with the franchise because they want to transform it into a GaaS. But first I really hope they come back to the old gameplay style and modernize it the right way, I want the tension and the stress back in the series and I also want the realism to be back, especially in Sam's animations. I think that a mix between Snake's movements in MGS 5 and Sam's animations in Chaos Theory would be great and would bring a good refresh. And also do some improvement to the AI and bring some new ideas like adding a memory system for example. I'm fed up of enemis forgetting the player after 30 seconds, it's a used and reused non-immersive feature. It's time to renovate AI and stealth games :) And there would be some really nice ideas from the first games to recover and extend. Chaos Theory is obviously the best entry in the franchise with the most polished, solid, advanced and pleasant gameplay. But I also love Double Agent because I love its story and the tension it brings. It creates a unique and stressful atmosphere that I never met again in any other game. And the soundtrack by Michael McCann is my favorite in the whole franchise, even if Amon Tobin's one is also great. Both versions of feel like the true last Splinter Cell games to me, however that's sad that the next-gen version was released too early and badly optimized, even if Ubisoft Shanghai always had troubles optimizing their games... Because despites some weird gameplay choices (like the regenerative health or the absence of the light meter), it has so many new interesting gameplay mechanics which were poorly used but which could have give more depth to the gameplay (like the fact that we can swim, that we can hide under a truck, to hang from a winch or cut a glass). In my opinion Conviction and Blacklist were good solid games but very bad Splinter Cell games. And Blacklist was not a "true return to form for the stealth action series" to me. It has a lot of flaws and lacks too many depth, realism and precision to make it a true stealth game. The fear of being spotted at any time, to mess up the throwing of a gadget, to trigger an alarm, the fact that our steps can easily be heard, ... I think that all this has no more interest if our hero is agile, moves fast, and can climb a building in five seconds or kill three enemies in a split second. Not to mention some features that were no longer present such as interrogations, lockpicking and hacking mini-games, ... Blacklist is maybe the richest SC in terms of content but it is the only advantage it has. The variety of gameplay is only a decoy to attract a larger audience but at the end it only results in destroying the natural evolution of the gameplay. Besides I didn't feel any tension in Blacklist's story, the story was very cheesy and predictable and Sadiq was a cliché of a bad Hoolywoodian villain. Just like the other characters who were annoying and not interesting at all. And the levels were larger but not more open, most of the several secondary paths were just diverted ways with cornices or ventilation ducts to get around the enemies, they have no interest in terms of gameplay. It's globally the whole level design in Blacklist which was too much focused on giving the players easy ways to avoid NPCs instead of progressing into a realistic environment with kinds of puzzles and tricky situations like in the old games. But I respect everyone's opinion about the franchise and can understand why some players liked this game, especially those who didn't know the old games and are not used to their harsh gameplay. Anyway it was a great video, you did a nice work. Let's hope Ubisoft is working hard to recreate a true stealth experience because this franchise deserves a real and strong come back.

I've played through all the PC iterations except Double Agent and loved them all, wasting many hours in map recon to compete effectively in Chaos Theory's Spy vs Merc mode. I am even considering re-installing Blacklist, which I enjoyed but found that the scripted missions, such as the final face-off with the villain were over-linear, tedious and unavoidable. Thanks again for the excellent work.
