Germans conqured Old Prussia and over several centuries they assimilated. Unlike the Americans that practically exterminated all the native Americans the old Prussians and Germans assimilated and eventually merged into one population. Old Prussian traditions and culture merged with Germans to become a unique mixture of both and the plague reduced the population regardless of their heritage. To suggest otherwise is either falling for anti German propaganda I wouldn't expect you to say Welsh were killed by the British but rather they were forcefully assimilated like many indigenous regions in France, Spain and Britain. Seems like double standards when you consider that unlike France, Britain and Spain the nation of Germany is only made up of Germans without having had to conquer an indigenous population because GERMANS ARE THE INDIGENOUS POPULATION OF GERMANY. A quarter of what had up to that point been German land for several millenia was ethnically cleansed of all its 14 million inhabitants in the aftermath of WW2 in the largest incident of ethnic cleansing in history. But the ethnic cleansing of Prussia which caused over 2 million civilians deaths doesn't get mentioned by Armchair historian while discussing Prussia or the 2WW. Doesn't quite seem fit the anti German naritive

I'm part (West-)German and I still find Prussia incredibly "exotic" in a way. It's stranger for us than it is e.g. for a Calabrian to think that his country was united by the more or less francophone Duchy of Piedmont a bit earlier. Italy's capital is Rome, not Turin, and Piedmont has a quieter history. But modern Germany was shaped around the astonishing, dangerous and fast-moving Prussian military state or its legacy and Berlin became our capital. The fact that parts of North-Eastern Germany _within_ the much truncated current borders have Slavic roots while many far-off towns along the Polish, Lithuanian and North-West Russian coasts are historically more German is also something I'll never get used to.

Teutonic Knights' lands and later Duchy of Prussia was not part of Holy Roman Empire. Branderburg was, so Prussia being under the rule of Elector from Brunderburg was kind of part HRE via personal union with Branderburg but land of Prussia itself formally never wasn't. Fun fact: In Polish language we call old pagan Balto-Prussian "Prusowie" but German, christian Prussians we call "Prusacy" which thank's to XIX and XX cent. propaganda has some slighty negative meaning in the way of popular, common thinking of "Teutons->Prussians->Germans->Nazi Germany".

Also none of the prussian territories that are in nowaday Germany were ever given to a foreign nation, they still are there, but just entirely reorganized and renamed to Brandenburg, Berlin etc. Because why not? There's no need for more than 16 states in Germany which didn't exist like this before the world wars as well. It's all for administrative sake, as Germany doesn't have any landlords and heritages anymore that could divide territories again in the future and it's also much less complex to have 16 instead of like... 200? 300? different lands.

I consider these Prussian because they were ethnically majority German until the end of WW2. These territories all fell under the "Prussia" name by the end of the 18th century. West Prussia was given to Poland after WW1 and then after WW2 the Russians ethnically cleansed all these areas of their German inhabitants and gave them to Poland with the exception of West Brandenburg, Vor Pommern and the still German part of Silesia remaining fully German today.

But for sure back then Poland went through a period of fragmentation into duchies. There was supposed to be a duke that would control all the others, but in reality this led to a lot of Polish principalities to split off (mainly in Silesia and Pomerania). In the end pretty much only Greater Poland and Lesser Poland were later reunited, and after some time Masovia got reintegrated as well (even though parts of it were vassilized to Czechs, for some time)

This is a very solidly succinct video, well done! You did not mention however one of the terms of the treaty whereby the Prussians were permitted to retain the lands. "By the Second Treaty of Toruń (1466) the Polish crown acquired direct sovereignty over the Teutonic Order’s former possessions to the west of the lower Vistula River, together with the Kulmerland (or Chełmno district) and Ermland (Warmia) to the east; and that part of Prussia east of the Vistula River (i.e., East Prussia) was left to the order only on condition that the grand, or high, master should hold it as fief of the Polish crown. The lands along the Vistula, under Polish sovereignty, became known as Royal Prussia; thus a wedge of predominantly Polish-speaking territory came to be consolidated between German-speaking East Prussia and the German Reich to the west." One of the chief attributes of the Prussian foreign policy over the long-term was their disregard for treaties and a generally objectivist way of doing business. They contrived a justification to do what they desired to do. Your quote at the beginning does a great job of diplomatically stating this. There was a point you mentioned that Albert Frederick was childless. I do not believe that this was entirely accurate. Whereas it is true that he had no surviving male heirs, he did have surviving daughters. "Albert Frederick and Marie were parents to seven children: Anna of Prussia (3 July 1576 - 30 August 1625). Married John Sigismund, Elector of Brandenburg. Marie of Prussia (23 January 1579 - 21 February 1649). Married Christian, Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth. Albert Frederick of Prussia (1 June 1580 - 8 October 1580). Sophie of Prussia (31 March 1582 - 4 December 1610). Married Wilhelm Kettler of Courland. Eleanor of Prussia (21 August 1583 - 9 April 1607). Married Joachim Frederick, Elector of Brandenburg. Wilhelm Frederick of Prussia (23 June 1585 - 18 January 1586). Magdalene Sibylle of Prussia (31 December 1586 - 22 February 1659). Married John George I, Elector of Saxony. At his death, the duchy passed to his son-in-law John Sigismund, Margrave of Brandenburg, combining the two territories under a single dynasty and forming Brandenburg-Prussia." They were Napoleon after Napoleon: consuming their neighbors, running a largely proto-fascist regime, and complaining if anyone ever had the audacity to countermand their claims. I really enjoyed the video about this confusing time in European history, A LOT of people have been benefitted by your good work here.

Of course losing Prussia is a real tragedy for the (previous) inhabitants of the region, but when it comes to wealth and industry, Germany didn't loose much. Once a strong Prussian State was achieved, there were wars, but going to war, sometimes being rented out, was preferable to what had been experienced before. Seems like MY ancestors were living right along the PATH to where many raids took place, Some of my Ancestors were in Havelland, others up by Arendsee (in the Altmark region) I had no idea about the suffering that they had to endure, at least until Frederick The Great. It gets hazy for me from that time until 1845 when my Becker ancestors left Arendsee and went to Bremen and then to Galveston, Republic of Texas (which would only be a Republic for a few more months after my ancestors hit the shore) ... the rest is fairly well known, farmer, baker, factory worker American History (but hey, at least my Grandpa machined parts for Nasa's Apollo Mission)

In addition, although Friedrich the Great was a formidable tactician and general (proven in the battle of Leuthen) claiming that his army alone was able to defeat the coalition of France, Austria and Russia in the seven years war is a huge stretch. The Prussian army was basically defeated by the Austrians and the Russians after the battle of Kunersdorf. Miraculously however, Austria and Russia didn't march towards Berlin to end the war. In another lucky incident, Tsar Elisabeth died and Peter an admirer of Friedrich II. succeeded who made peace with Prussia. In the meantime, France lost the war against the British in the colonies and couldn't really make progress on the German theater. Of course for a state as little as Prussia the relatively large army was important. However, it is part of the legends that the Prussian army rolled over all enemies they faced. Perhaps built upon Leuthen, Waterloo, Königgrätz and Sedan. However, Prussia also experienced decisive defeats on the battlefield like Kunersdorf and Jena & Auerstedt.
