I think the egg-dish you liked so much might be "Sucuk mit Ei" - Sucuk with eggs, which is a very simple dish with eggs and the turkish garlic sausage called Sucuk. You can find Sucuk in any turkish (Super-)Market. If you'd like to cook it yourself you'll find many recipes online. Basic ingredients are: eggs, Sucuk, onions, oil, and chili flakes. Enjoy!

It's true that Sucuk mit Ei is very common but the one in the video was Pastirma which is air-dried cured beef. From Kayseri province of Turkey. (Hence Kayseri Menu)

Great video which I had to pause halfway through to get myself something to eat. You made me so hungry! 🙂 Another 'old Berliner' restaurant I tried once was Mutter Hoppe in the Rathausstraße which was pretty good. I love the disappearing slice of bread at 23:15 and the mother's instinctive securing the cup at 24:47 without even looking. That's a skill which only comes with parenthood. 😂 Thanks again for this mouth watering episode.

Great video, as always. Frankly, I'm a bit surprised that you had to go all the way to Berlin to encounter Kartoffelpuffer mit Apfelmus, as they're a staple food throughout Germany and one should think back on that christmas market you visited they should have them somewhere. They're also really easy to make, though a bit time consuming due to the indivdual frying, which doesn't scale well with family size ;).

As a Berliner, I would have sent to exactly these places. Very good research! Except for the Pfannkuchen, for which you have to go to a real bakery and eat a traditional one, filled with plum jam. And please don't associate East Berlin with Soviets. Only states within the USSR were Soviet states. The GDR was a country in its own right and was only occupied by the USSR. Like the FRG was by the Allies.

as somone who is from the frankfurt area. i was growing up with the term kräppel. i am now in baden württemberg and here its called berliner, but parts of my family is also from croatia, so there they call this pastry krafne and this comes surly from the austro hungarian influence. so im fully aware of many different terms for one pastry, but bismark reminds me more of an pickeld hering and not an jelly donut.

Good job on the food selection. I am a Berliner, but also lived in Hong Kong for twenty years and when I discovered the Asian food market in Lichtenberg when I moved back to the city my heart was content. The two main dishes you had in the last restaurant, Königsberger Klopse and liver with fried onions and apples, are really typical dishes of Berlin. They don't look as fancy when I cook them, but I also don't need to sell them to paying customers :). The liver dish is all about the combination of flavors (irony/ meaty, savory, and sweet) and with Königsberger Klopse it's about the sauce (sour, sweet, salty capers). When I cook Königsberger Klopse, I usually make a big amount of sauce. With restaurants it's always a hit or miss with these sauces, because if they use instant cubes instead of real vegetable stock, the sauce doesn't taste right, and many don't get the balance right between sour and sweet either. For Pfannkuchen my favorite filling is Pflaumenmus (plum jam) and I also like a version called Quarkbällchen. They are made with dough that also as fresh/curd cheese (Quark) in it, and they are best when they are fried freshly in front of you with a bit of a crust. Kartoffelpuffer for me is about the size and consistency of the grated potatoes - yours looked like they cheated with a mixer :) - the right amount of onion to get the savory taste right, and possibly even frying them in lard (not as common anymore, but my grandma used lard to fry them). Also, when I cook them at home, I usually make my own apple sauce.

It's been said McDonald's is not really a hamburger restaurant but a french fries restaurant because they make more profit on that. Or maybe it's a soft drink restaurant because they make even more profit on that. Or maybe it's a real estate company because it has choice property locations, and the restaurant is just a holding pattern until they can sell the land.

It looked so yummy! It’s hard to find a good Pfannkuchen /Berliner in Berlin nowadays. In my opinion the ones you get in the average chain bakeries are only mediocre to bad. The dough is often much too dry. From the look of it , the Pfannkuchen you tried wasn’t as good as it could be.

My best food experience in Berlin has been at "TISK Speisekneipe" in Neukölln, which for Berlin is rather expensive. But I had there the most modern and interesting food experience in a very long time. I can not recommend enough not to book a table but to book a seat at the counter (although that might feel stressful or unpleasant), but we had the opportunity to chitchat with one of the cooks almost the whole time we were there. That was really insightful and made the food even better.

I am sure you get plenty of Italian food in Freiburg, but there is a marvelous institution in Berlin called the Hostaria del Monte Croce on Mittenwalderstrasse in Kreuzberg. It is housed in an adorable cottage tucked away in a courtyard and they serve the meals family style at long tables. You have to order a prix fixe menu, which changes every month, currently €69 including all the mineral water and wine you can drink plus coffee and a digestif. They make everything themselves and the atmosphere is wonderful.

The Story is about the cultural adaption or introduction in PRUSSIA and not about some Alien Planet in southern Germany who keeps the Copyrights. Look on the Map of 1486 there is no Germany. We did not even had the same unified language. Kingdoms had a different speeds of adaptation and cultural exchange. Nobody wants to rob your Fake Krapfen Recipe 🤪...just joking. Its possible the Baker in the Prussian Army came from the South, yet the story of the cultural adaption and naming in Prussia is different from the origin Story of the Recipe.

There's a funny story about Berliner which I've read during my time at university. Possibly/probably it's just a rumor. On a campaign trail then vice-president Dan Quayle (with President George H.W. Bush) had prepared a speech to be given in Bismarck, the state capital of North Dakota. He was informed that there were living quite a few people who had german ancestors. Quayle was looking for a nice quotation to cite and found a famous quote of J.F.Kennedy: "Ich bin ein Berliner." To be sure of what he was citing he added an english translation to his manuscript. While giving his speech he got confused by his manuscript, decided to rely on the translation, and said: "I am a jelly donut" leaving the audience as much as himself slightly bewildered.

The story I heard about currywurst is something similar. At the end of WW2 and for a period afterwards many British soldiers based in Germany had also served in India - as India was then part of British rule. The British soldiers wanted to spice the German sausages with some flavour, so with experience of India they started to add curry powder. When I was in Germany with UK forces I always enjoyed a good currywurst. German food is under rated in the rest of Europe. I disagree, I always find it to be great and certainly loads of comfort food to choose from.

My stable restaurant is DIENER, Grolmanstraße...but you have to be prepared for a very special Berlin experience. Since you are eager to learn more about your new home country: there were indeed private enterprises durning communism, but the taxes were very high for them. There were private butchers, bakers, plumbers and a few restaurants etc.. But they could not get rich due to the high taxes.

Your Königsberger Klopse reminds me to my time at university. The mensa had that strange menu 1.) grilled chicken with chips 2.) Königsberger Klopse. Result: Endless queues throughout the building for the chicken - I had zero wait for my favourite Klopse.

It never occurred to me North Vietnamese would migrate to East Germany and South Vietnamese to West Germany, and then in a single Germany they'd be together again. I didn't know there were Vietnamese in Germany at all, so I learned something from your ostensibly food video.

As you seem to enjoy SE-Asian cuisine a lot, I'd recommend visiting the "Thai-Wiese" if you'll ever happen to be in Berlin in summer on a sunny Saturday afternoon. It's basically a commercialized pot luck picknick, where Thai families come to the Preußenpark on Saturday afternoon, bring a big batch of home made, super authentic Thai food, eat and sell some of it to visitors. It's a Berlin staple!

All the time I was growing up, my next-door neighbor She was born and raised in East Berlin. Her father owned a butcher shop, in East Berlin! The story goes that during the war WWII they covered over a wine Shoppe, or maybe soon after the war, or during the war??? There are wonderful old bottles of wine, that are under ground somewhere in East Berlin. I’ve often thought about where this wine shop must’ve been & where it was & what happened to it and if someday somebody would find it with wonderful wine. Her mother came to visit they were part of Hitler’s 200 mile March it was an awful time for them. She met one of our local Gi’s he married her and she came to the USA as a war Bride. I am so thankful she was my neighbor and I learned so much from her!

Sending this to a friend in Berlin. I'm located a bit northwest of Hamburg. Don't know Berlin. But I have a nice Hamburg story for y'all: friends from Belgium visited. All vegetarians. And we walked up and down the Osterstraße. Only open restaurant was greek. Hmmm? for vegetarians? We walked in. Here comes the result: they visited us, again. 1st question they had: "can we go to that greek restaurant, again?" THAT is, what I call a compliment!

Thanks for the cool video! I have been living in Berlin for 16 years, but was born in Cologne. And you should really try Kartoffelpuffer or much rather Reibekuchen in Cologne! Maybe you can make it there for the Christmas markets. It's a staple food there and so much better than in Berlin. My husband is from here and he swore he hated Reibekuchen until I introduced him to them in Cologne. With apple sauce of course. The best ones can be found on the Christmas market on Heumarkt in Cologne.

Because of our tight schedule in Berlin while there, we had to pick one restaurant for dinner and went with the TV Tower to combine dining with a sight seeing experience. We found the meal to be excellent. My family's roots are all north German and that's the lifestyle I grew up with in Wisconsin. I'm very familiar with traditional north German dishes and cook a lot of them myself. When visiting, we spent the bulk of our time in the north and ate fabulous food in both restaurants and in people's homes. We'll be in Berlin for several days next year and may look up a couple of the locations you visited. By the way, they're called "Bismarcks" here as well. Mrs. Brimmer made great ones back in the early 1960's in her bakery.

There is another kind of "Berliner" that is quite different from the traditional ones that you find in normal bakeries. Mostly you can find them on Jahrmarkt/Kramermarkt and at least here in northern Germany generally at some special places. They are fried all around and have quite different texture and taste. Very delicious! By the way: Thank you again for this high quality video with entertaining as well as instructive content. 🥰

The thing with the Vietnamese in Germany is a bit complicated. There are basically 2 kinds: one that came here running away from communism, and the others who came here because they were eager communists. In the former DDR - what we now call neue Bundesländer - they had a cooperation program with so called "socialist brother countries" during the 70s. Such were countries like Cuba, Angola and also post war Vietnam. Such countries would send young people to the DDR, who then made a german style Berufsausbildung, or went to University. This was a privilege granted to promising young Vietnamese communist party members . But quiet a few decided to stay in the DDR, and they married a east German. The Vietnamese who came to the BRD - West Germany - came here as refugees. They had fled Vietnam to get away from just that same communist regime. They were often refered to as the "boat people". Not few of them had a sketchy past, as members of the South Vietnamese secret police or armed forces, or in politics as collaborators with the US. But the majority just didn't see a future for themself in a socialist society, I guess. And then in 1989 everything suddenly changed, when both types of Vietnamese were in the same country. In the early years of reunification, the Vietnamese in Berlin were fanous for controlling the trade with smuggled tax free cigarettes. But today its more the restaurant business, I guess.

@@urlauburlaub2222 Well, I think most - if not all - foreign cuisine restaurants adapt to the customer's taste. A normal German could not eat in a real Indian restaurant, for example, because the food is far too spicy. So if they want to sell something, they have to adapt.

But you obviously took the Currywust with skin, Berliners would take the one without skin, give it a try, when you come next time.

It's a Turkish dish, too, made from eggs, tomatoes, bell pepper and often Sucuk (turkish garlic sausage) I think apple sauce and even gingerbread are put in some gravy (like Sauerbraten). And I like the fact that you asked Jack a question in English ("You wanna try?") and he responded in German ("Nein"). Is this a thing while he is learning to talk?
