History of Batman Games (1986 - 2023) | Documentary
Ойындар
A full history of the Batman game franchise. From Ocean Software's original Batman game in 1986, to his upcoming appearance in Rocksteady's highly anticipated "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League."
Celebrate 37+ years of one of the most iconic heroes in all of video gaming. Batman has evolved significantly in gaming form, starting off as a series of movie tie-in platformers and beat-em-ups, into the massively popular Batman Arkham series by Rocksteady. This documentary will cover it all, including: Batman the Movie, Batman Returns, Batman Begins, every mainline Arkham game, and everything in-between!
(The following were excluded either because they weren't relevant to the discussion, or because I plan to feature them in a separate video: Batman: Brave and the Bold on Wii, Lego Batman 1-3, Justice League games, and the Injustice series.)
Join me as I detail each and every game, breaking down their development history, storyline, gameplay features, visuals, and their critical reception, all backed with each game's original soundtrack.

This video was an immense undertaking, more so than any other video I've ever worked on. I initially planned to only cover the Arkham games, but decided that you all likely expected to see more - so I went out and purchased dozens of classic Batman games, read through hundreds of comics, watched EVERY batman film, EVERY television show, and poured countless hours in to make sure things were accurate. But even so, there are bound to be errors as I'm doing all of this work solo. Please feel free to let me know in the comments if you spot one! Now sit back, grab a drink and enjoy the ENTIRE History of BATMAN!
This one's for you Kevin Conroy.

Another more overlooked Batman game is the Dark Knight Rises mobile game. It's nothing super special but it's an Arkham-like game that even has an open world, considering how low powered most phones were back then, it's impressive that a full open Gotham was in it and a watered down combat system that was still pretty fun (at least for 13 year old me when I found it on the app store) and with similar grappling and cape gliding mechanics to the Arkham games it was a damn good time, even if the story was a poorly realised version of the worst movie in the Dark Knight trilogy. It's the only portable Batman game (not counting the PC ports on the steam deck and other handheld PC's) that really adheres to the 3D console Arkham experience, and I wish the PS Vita got a better game than Arkham Origins Blackgate (which is still good but obviously not the same kinda experience as the mainline console counterpart)

Well said. I was really put off by Smith’s performance in Origins-and Troy Baker is so overused, I really wish studios would stop hiring him solely for name recognition and choose actors who are right for the job. Without Conroy, (and someday without Hamill), I worry that this will be a recurring trend for Batman, and that he will never feel the same in any animated or game-based medium.

The tribute to Kevin Conroy brought a tear to my eye. That was absolutely beautiful! He gave me, and a lot of people so many amazing, and unforgettable memories over the years. R.I.P. Kevin Conroy. God rest his soul. He was an amazing, humble, and talented human being with a big heart. Truth, vengeance, and justice. He was the definitive Batman. Out of the shadows, and into our hearts. He was a living legend until his last breath. I can't believe that he passed away. My mind still can't process the fact that he's gone. I never met him but, I feel like I lost a great friend. He was kind, talented, and an absolute gem of a human being, and a diamond in the rough. I miss you so much! Thanks for the wonderful memories! Thanks, once again Nick for another stellar video! It was awesome from beginning to end. I'm sure that it took you a long time to make it, but it was well worth the time, and effort. I'm currently playing a few games (A Plague Tale Requiem, Spider-Man, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and Mad Max). I'm going to start playing Batman: Return to Arkham as soon as I'm finished with those 4 titles. Having said that, Thanks, once again Nick for everything that you do, and for the continued hard work! It really means a lot! God bless and stay safe!

Quality content! Great job and RIP Kevin! ❤️
rest in peace Batman, we know, no matter how far you are, you're always here when the night falls, Kevin, Adam. there will never be any other actors that did the job of batman so well it arguably helped form who the character is today more than any other pieces of non-paper media. God Bless, Rest. From all of us who feel hope, and have our hair raise when see a bat signal, we love you both so much. rest in peace, our batmen.
Mark Hamill said he's not voicing the joker anymore without having Kevin Conroy there to perform lines with. He said they were a team like laurel & Hardy. RIP Mr Conroy
I've watched 10 minute videos that feel like 30 and 4 hour videos that feel like 3 but I've never experienced watching a 2 and a half hour long video in what felt like 20 minutes, this video is probably your best work yet! It was concise and straight to the point while at the same time delving into important and interesting details, the research needed to create something like this is out of this world. Well done Nick!
My god i love the Arkham trilogy. I wasn't a Batman fan at any level but Arkham asylum changed that. I love these games to death. I complete at least one of them every year. It pains me to think i will never get a new Batman arkham game. R.I.P. Kevin. You were and will always be the Batman.
I still remember watching the animated series with my sis. It not only introduced us to Batman but super heroes as a whole. RIP Kevin. You'll always be Batman to me.
Batman Returns for the SNES was a classic. I loved that game sooooooo much. LEGO Batman was surprisingly good. Loved that game too.
This is the most in depth documentary for batman games. Seems like near end of 2d batman games Era were masterpieces but that transition from 2d to 3d batman games was rough. My favorite batman games was batman nes, arkham city and arkham knight.
Arkham Knight will always be my favourite. Thank you Kevin Conroy for being the best Batman ever.❤🦇

I suggest Arkham City if you're craving for more Arkham games ! Best way to experience is via the GOTY edition on PC ( Steam ) , or the original on PS3 / Xbox360 if you don't mind the worse framerate and resolution. Remastered on PS4/5/XB1/Series doesn't run that good and has below-average redone assets by another dev.

Immediately want to say thank you for this work Nick. One of my all time favorite series and I've been so excited for this video
I love items like “shock gloves” in video games! It’s a fantasy so it’s fun when you’re given freedom.
Wow, what an absolutely legendary documentary! I remember playing the Acclaim video game based on the first Joel Schumacher film, I was never able to finish it, there was a level where you go to the circus and I could never get past that level. I also remember playing the semi-open world game based on the second film where you get to drive the batmobile, the one that was pre-GTA, I never finished that either as it was a pain to play. Of course I've also played the Arkham series and I've completed Arkham Knight 100% 3 times, once on Xbox and twice on Playstation, I've also completed the two telltale games thanks to them being on Xbox Live Gold. This documentary really brings it all home, what a long history Batman has had. This documentary should be on more than just youtube, it could be on television, it's just so outstanding. Thank you for making this as well as all your other documentaries, the passion you put into making these really makes gaming worth it.
Love Kevin Conroy so much he was my whole childhood and my adulthood thanks for all of the memories Mr. Conroy RIP🥹
I always have huge respect for creators who put so much effort into creating these documentary style videos. Especially when it comes to superhero media like Batman 😁 thank you for making this.

The Adventures of Batman and Robin on the Genesis looks fantastic visually!
i genuinely love how he can cover "the worst (batman or not) video game of all time" and still find a way to spend like a minute praising some of it's good parts. Never forget that many kinds of artists worked their asses off to make that game, and they very likely tried their very very best to make it fun & good.

@@theshield3643 IDK, I don't get the feeling that people put alot of effort into Superman 64 in any fashion, but in that Batman game, you can tell there was some effort put in for the cinematics etc. Up until about the PS2 era, sometimes a very small team could churn out simple games (like Superman 64) pretty effortlessly. One of the Doom ports was famously literally done by 1 person. Literally a full fledged videogame release for a console, done by 1 person.
Watching your videos makes me revisit my old library of games. It's been just long enough to come back with fresh eyes to enjoy again.

Nick, you spoil us with these documentaries. Your documentaries have become a staple for my son and I. Thank you for all of your hard work!
I never really understood the criticism on Arkham Origins. It also was a very enjoyable videogame and a worthy entry in this great videogame series. On another note: again an excellent high quality documentary, Nick930!
Batman Returns 1993 was the first video game I played on the super Nintendo, Catwoman was hard to fight I was born 8/30/1989 I was 4.
Thanks! Really dig your style of history telling its smooth and professional, and in depth with all the background and origins. It all flows well into the game itself.
What a documentary my favorite part was the arkham series and the concept art for it is awesome. I've always found joy in these types of videos. Rocksteady truly redefined the superhero gaming genre with the arkham series and it bleeds with passion. I love this series. RIP Mr Conroy.
Batman Begins Video Game was my first introduction to the universe. But Arkham Asylum was something I'll never forget. Experiencing these characters for the first time ever, I'm very grateful for the success of this game. It began my deep dive into comics, films and series that soon formed my entire childhood. I believe that franchise is responsible for creating an entire generation of superhero fans that even Marvel couldn't replicate in gaming. The entire Marvel roster has dominated the film industry, but the Batman Franchise has single-handedly carried the gaming superhero genre for almost 15 years. Now that's called impressive world-building.
i dont believe i sat here and watch all of this... good job. I started with the NES Batman when i was little...
Thank you for taking the time to create this lovely documentary and provide a detailed history of Batman in general. I have not played the Batman Arkham or Injustice series yet, but have got the chance to play Batman on SNES as a child.
I loved the Telltale Batman series, as a huge fan of the comics and just Batman/Bruce Wayne in general it was super cool to be in his shoes and able to make choices
40:05 The moment I was waiting for, one of the best video games series I've played & certainly the best Superhero Game Series ever.

I got around to watching this and enjoyed it more than I expected. I mean your work is always good but this was a long video and a real showcase for you. To a degree, you followed a single evolutionary path, ignoring the radically divergent series. Showing the evolution of the technology behind the game. Really really good.
I've put almost 1000 hours into Arkham Knight over multiple playthroughs, by far my favorite
Fantastic long summary of the Batman games. Although not *directly* a batman game, there's also Gotham City Imposters that came out on all platforms in 2012 which was pretty well rated and fun to play.

I don't know much about Batman, but one thing I do like is the grim, almost horror esc take the more modern series has taken, especially with Rocksteady's games. There's something about how Gotham looks and feels, that's truly unique.
I swear the amount of time this man puts into these videos is amazing,I love them I be falling asleep to them its like listening to a bed time story.Nick should do a history on the dark souls series, starting from the original demon souls,to dark souls, then bloodbourn and sekiro and elden ring, all the Fromsoftware games pretty much, not sure if it will be a long video, but regardless I would like to see that one,one day hopefully.
R.I.P Kevin Conroy. Deeply saddened by the news of the passing of one of the best Batman actors there was. I'll always think of him, in terms of The Bat-Man, alongside Adam West and Michael Keaton, as the animated series wouldn't have been as so successful without him, I wasn't around when Batty '66 was first seen but I caught the repeated viewings and saw Batty '89 at the cinema and saw Batty TAS on Saturday mornings in the early '90's, and was very pleased to finally own each on DVD when I got older, but have since sadly mislaid 'em since I moved home. Very fond memories mixed with the emotion that comes from the loss of a vital part of a piece of my past life.
I'm gna sleep good tonight! And then I'm gna be entertained tmrw afternoon! I love these long videos from you nick! They are always the best!
One aspect I loved about the Arkham games is there is no weapon limitation. Like, you have infinite batarangs and explosive gel. I remember in the PS1 Spiderman game, you had a web cartridge limitation which makes sense, but still kind of sucked to have to go find more. It makes you think about how to play, but sometimes, it's nice to not have to worry about weapon limits.
I have loved your documentaries since I discovered your channel, and seeing the Batman one finally come true couldn't bring more joy to me! Thank you, Nick!
You are phenomenal!! Thank you for another wonderful video! Kevin would be happy about this video!
I just finished Gotham Knights yesterday, whilst it doesn't hold a candle to Arkham City or Knights in certain areas, the story is fun, the characters are well written, the detail on the characters and costumes are extremely well made and look better than in Knight. All in all a fun game and can be seen as a companion piece to the Arkham series.

Nothing compares to arkham asylum. I mean city origins and knights are stellar but there's nothing like the 1st game in the series. I couldn't believe how good it was the 1st few hours I played it. I wish new games were as polished as rocksteadys masterpieces
Well, that's my Monday sorted 🤔
Man, the nostalgia hit me SUPER hard during the NES Batman movie game sequence of this video. I could almost smell the Pizza Hut while my brother and I hurled insults at the TV because the game was hard like Ninja Gaiden!
You missed an important piece of the story. Batman didn't develop in a vacuum, he was heavily based on The Shadow of radio serial and pulp comic fame. From my understanding, he was also based on Zorro. Great video, no insult intended! I'm just a huge fan of The Shadow and have always found it interesting that he is largely forgotten while the character he inspired lives on.
Thanks for doing this Nick. High quality content as always!
The Nintendo Batman from Sunsoft has the most hours of my life on any video game. So many replays. Thanks Nick for the amazing work as always. Still watching, just that the music made me reminiscent.
