For those of you interested, Three Day Eventing underwent a seismic change about six Olympics ago. The IOC discussed the possibility of removing the sport altogether unless huge changes took place. It is very expensive to hold a Three Day Event especially in a country say like Greece where riding is not popular, also it was seen as too elite for the lesser nations to compete at such a difficult level. The changes were: the endurance phases of A, B C all were removed ( tracks and roads, steeplechase and second tracks and roads went and only the cross country of 30 fences remained. This obviously affected the British other Three Day Events like Badminton and Burghley. Also amended fo safety reasons, instant elimination after a fall of horse or rider. Another factor is that the dressage phase has a more significant part to play. Back in the day there were some quite poor tests, now the standard is very high and for a rider who has a horse fast across the country, it's possible to finish on the dressage score. It has not demeaned the sport in any way but has happily made it more inclusive. One can often see an individual rider representing a nation that is not known for equestrianism - that can only be very good for the sport which is thriving. So sad that the Tokyo Olympics has been postponed; team GB had a good chance of winning gold, a feat not achieved since Munich 1972. Roz Canter who is the current world champion might also have been one of the favorites to win an individual gold medal.

Wow even my childhood coach was documented in this. We trained with Anneli Drummond-Hay in South Africa for a few years, she's currently know as Anneli Wuckerpfennig after marrying a South African named Erol, who was one of our top showjumpers here. Anneli is over +80 years and still produces horses and jumps open level jumping!

God I miss those days.......I grew up idolizing Lucinda Green, Ginny Lang, Mark Todd, Ian Stark and Bruce Davidson. I even had the chance to school with Bruce Davidson then. They gave me so much inspiration in my junior years and today in Eventing. ❤❤❤❤❤

it was so much more hardcore then! that's crazy! also love seeing the leggy thoroughbreds cause back then your horse had to fast and brave! now it's all about technicality, both difficult and cool but I prefer the old style

There was SO much strenuous effort on the XC day! It makes me think how horses have heart attacks after XC today, and they do about 1/3 of the work - I feel sorry for the horses then!!

also today they have eliminated the road and tracks plus the steeplechase course, to make it easier for other countries to stand a chance of winning. Me I think that is wrong it should be up to the countries to catch up.

These old films are what I feel is the real test, for horse and riders as today its only a canter around the park, my father Laurie Morgan and other members of the 1960 Australian Olympic team went around the cross country course gaining maxemin bonus points as their horses where very fit and they went on and did the same at the Rome Olympic's

People are more conscious about safety, that's why jumps and horses nowadays are about getting over the jump rather than beating the clock.

Miss the days of normal, workmanlike salutes in the dressage. Today’s elaborate flourishes really annoy me. The point of the salute was to show the horse was fully in the bridle and completely attentive. It was never meant to be an interpretive dance.
