The Croats elected the Hungarian king to the throne when their own king died without an heir. Meanwhile, Dubrovnik was its own state, which created quarantine, and was quite rich. Also, the Ottomans never got past Croatia, with the Hungarians and Habsburgs never really sending many troops and the only leaders being Croatian. I notice that Wikipedia is surprisingly uninformed on the matter, especially since they claim that the Ottomans won the overall war, when, over the next two centuries, Croatia retook all their lost lands and finally independently unified in 1918.
