History from The Archives Episode 5: The Early History of the Sto. Niño de Cebu

This April, the Philippines will be celebrating the 500th year of the introduction of Christianity in the Philippines. And one religious icon closely tied to this celebration is the Santo Nino, believed to be the only surviving relic of this historic event. Although widely popular not only to Catholics but to most Filipinos regardless of their religious affiliation, its history however has not been adequately established by reliable historical documentations. Aided by the rich archival and bibliographic collections from the Archivo de los Padres Agustinos de Filipinas in the Augustinian convent in Valladolid, Spain, this 5th episode of the History from the Archives will provide a brief discussion on its origins, its introduction to the natives by the Magellan expedition and its survival of 44 years of hiatus of Christianity in the Philippines until found by the crew of the Legazpi-Urdaneta Expedition.

As a Roman Catholic, I have observed how people value and have faith in the Sto. Niño. Through this video, I have learned that even before, stories of miracles are famous about the Sto. Niño as well as how the image was used in rituals. The significance of the Sto. Niño in religious aspect and how it was bound on the history of the Philippines was discussed clearly. I am happy to know that it continues to affect the lives of the Filipinos positively, so thank you for the effort to share this with us.

Being raised in a Born Again Christian family, I have little to no information about Sto. Nino. After watching this episode, I was able to know the explanations behind the celebrations of these festivals. I learned not only about Sto. Nino's religious and spiritual value, but also its historical relevance. Thank you Sir Danny for this information.

It is fascinating how our ancestors practiced rituals before and believed the image of Sto. Niño is miraculous. Many Filipinos placed importance on this event which is evident until today as we continuously celebrate the Sinulog Festival in Cebu. This celebration allows us to commemorate the birth of Christianity in our country, as well as honor the first known statue of baby Jesus. Thank you again for this video, Sir Danny!

Growing up from a religious family, Santo Nino is believed to be the baby Jesus that we should pray for before leaving the house. We also offer food and milk on our Santo Nino statue every week. With the help of this archive, I was able to understand the origin of Santo Nino. I have also realized how Magellan used religion to manipulate the people. The influence of the Spaniards on the beliefs of the people is dominating seeing as there are Santo Nino statues in almost all Filipino households. Thank you Sir Danny for this video.

The rich culture and beliefs that we have now demonstrate that we have been profoundly inspired by the Spaniards, particularly in religion, and learning about the history of the Sto. Niño de Cebu has made it even more fascinating given the everlasting dedication shown to it. The miracles and legends that surround it have allowed me to comprehend and appreciate it more fully than I had anticipated. I've also discovered how deeply ingrained cultural impact on Filipinos has become.

Growing up in a religious family, the image of Sto. Niño has always been part of our lives. I've always seen Sto. Nio figures inside our house, as well as the homes of my relatives and friends. However, I was unfamiliar with its origins and history. And as I listen to the stories about the Sto. Niño fascinated me because it not only strengthens our spiritual beliefs but also broadens our understanding of our early culture, traditions, and habits. Through this video, I realized its profound significance to every Filipino. Not only does it symbolize Christianity's arrival in the Philippines, but it is also a reminder of how strong our faith was even before we were officially introduced to Christianity.

Thank you, Sir Danny, for another interesting video that captivates the attention of the many! The essentiality of Sto Niño was emphasized in the entirety of the clip. It has aided in a great contribution to our academic field. As a Roman Catholic, I am well-aware of Sto Niño's image, but not his true persona. Watching the whole clip has made me realize the significance of Sto Niño - he is someone who is regarded as someone who is an embodiment of the people's religiousness. He has truly enriched the history of Catholicism in such a way that he brought miracles of the past, particularly in Cebu. He was addressed as a "diwata" for he brings rain every time the people would ask for rainfall. As a result, we celebrate the miracles and enrichments through major events like the Feast of Santo Niño, Sinulog festival, and other celebrations or colorful parades. Relaying information on historical events like this would not be possible without the help of various historical materials. For me, despite one's religious affiliation, Sto Niño will remain significant to the lives of every Filipino as it has showcased a unique identity to our country. As we commemorate the 500th year of the beginning of Christianity in our country, this video was necessary for the further knowledge of the many.

Upon growing up in a Catholic family, we have several Sto. Niño statues, figurines, and pictures in our own house that would be occasionally brought to the church for blessings and events for sight-seeking. It shows how important Sto. Niño is in our Filipino blood because it is rooted and has a very deep historical significance, especially in certain regions here. We should acknowledge Sto. Niño not only as a religious practice but also as a historical event and artifact. Truly, this episode showed that St. Niño is not only significant religion-wise but also plays a role in our history and how Filipinos are molded. Thank you so much for this very informative episode, Sir Danny!

Images of Sto. Niño can be commonly spotted in Filipino households. In addition to this, the Sinulog Festival is commemorated in Cebu every January in honor of Sto. Niño. This goes to show how influential Sto. Niño is in the spiritual life of Filipinos. Growing up, we had an image of Sto. Niño at home in which we would hang garlands of sampaguita but I only knew so little about the Child Jesus. This video was able to deliver substantial information about the origin of the devotion to Sto. Niño and how it promulgated to the Philippines through the arrival of Magellan. I realized how much Sto. Niño shaped the history of the Philippines and how it is being honored until today. Watching this video made me appreciate Sto. Nino even more. I only know he's a saint and I see his portrait in every house I go to. This video helps me better comprehend how he enriched our Catholic faith. People regard him as a diwata because he performs miracles and sends rain when people request it. I'm still amazed at how people cherish the saint's gift to our faith and not only make it a part of their life, but also help to recognize or appreciate our resources through festival celebrations as a way of thanking the saint. I am very happy that I watched this video because it not only enlightens me about Sto. Niño and its history but also makes me realize his contribution to the enrichment of our culture and spirituality.

As Filipinos, we are known as religious people, and we take great pride of it. Our belief for the Sto. Niño De Cebu is one of the most popular festivities here in our country, but I am not well enlightened by its origin or how much it is valued by the Cebuanos. With the help of this video, I now understand the prints that it had left in our history and how this belief was transferred from generation to generation. It exhibits how the belief of our ancestors, and the influence of the Spaniards were intertwined. Also, it embodies how much we, Filipinos, hold our highest regard on our practice and belief as the devotion to Sto. Niño is still highly observable in our contemporary world.

As I viewed this episode of history of Acrchives that tackled a brief discussion of Sto. Niño de Cebu I was delighted to be part of the viewers in a sence that this episode brings me back to the time when I was still young to shown my devotion to Mother Marry and his only begotten son Jesus as one of the Filipino Christian. Niño is not just a miracolous relict in the history of Filipino Catholism but as well as its significant to the central faith of most Cebuano and for all Filipino which symbolize a powerful belief in connection to Christianity. And this episode does not tackled about the religious implication but its historic relevance to Filipino's of the present, so I highly appreciated this episode.

Knowing its origin and story has an impact on me as a Filipino because, despite the various theories about its origin, it certainly served its purpose by being our religious figure, and it also mesmerizes me with how early Filipinos addressed it as their "diwata," being able to mix religious and native rituals. Back when I was in my formative years, I had this immense fascination with Christian books and Saints. I tended to collect images/relics of the latter; in which, Jesus’ pictures or any form of Sto. Niño were part of my collection. With this, I didn’t indulge myself that much in playing with toys, yet I also enjoyed those stuff. I had a happy childhood - it was not perfect but it was a wonderful childhood. And with this video presented by Sir Danny, which by the way thank you, sir, and to your team; I grasped the significance of the image, the Sto. Niño for FIlipinos, on why we revere it so much. With our previous readings on Pigaffeta, Plasencia, and Scott, we already know that the early Filipinos has their own belief system. I already know that Magellan introduced Christianity in Cebu, but I further learned that the Sto. Niño is the oldest Christian artifact in the Philippines, originally a gift from explorer Ferdinand Magellan to Rajah Humabon and his chief consort on account of their Christian baptism. Moreover, the Sto Niño played a vital role in our beliefs. Sir Danny shared the different miracles that the image shown as well as he was also addressed as "diwata" where early Filipinos performed rituals to ask for rain. With that, I realized the devotion to the Sto. Niño has spread outside the boundaries of Cebu and the Philippines thus we have fiestas and festivals to commemorate and celebrate Sto. Niño. I have learned that Filipino has been devoted to our religion even way back before and until now. Thank you Sir and to the HFA team for giving us educational contents! God Bless po!

This episode is mainly about Sto. Nino, it allows us to know the history or life of the said saint and enlighten us about the things that we haven't known regarding this matter. I have seen lots of Sto. Nino figures inside the house of my relatives, classmates, and friends and I asked them "Why did your family choose that saint to display inside instead of others?" and they answered "It gives us luck and he protects us from any harm and it is iconic", after observing this video I realized how inspiring the early history of Sto. Nino is. Before watching this episode, what I only know about Sto. Nino is a saint and Cebuanos or even all Filipinos celebrated his life through festivals but after watching it, I have gained lots of knowledge especially the basic ones. I hope that after seeing this episode, students will appreciate more the significance of culture and tradition and how impactful it is on the lives of the Filipinos.

As a child, I was always curious who's the baby figure carrying a bag and a cross in our bedroom and I tend to question my parents why do they keep on putting coins inside His bag and why is He keep getting the coins instead of me? And why do they buy clothes in a different color for Him? But as I grew older, I slowly understand. I even think that the Sto. Niño here in our house is older than me. Today, I learned new information about Sto. Niño, its history, and its relevance to my life as I slowly comprehend the world. Because of this, I recall something when my parents asked me to bring Sto. Niño with me when I go to the church for blessing. This video enables me to learn more about Sto. Upon watching this video, I gained significant knowledge about the early history of the Sto. Niño. This episode specifically highlighted how the Sto. Niño came to the Philippines and the different accounts pertaining to the description of the house where it was located. In this video, I learned that the existence of the Sto. Niño in the Philippines traces back to the Magellan expedition when queen Juana begged Antonio Pigafetta to give her the little wooden boy that was held by the Virgin Mother. That request was granted and that is how the Sto. Niño came into the Philippines. In conjunction, I think that the coming of Sto. Niño in the Philippines was one of the most historical and significant events in the history of Catholicism in our country. The miracles that were shown by the Sto. Niño strengthen our faith and devotion which makes us religious beings and a Christian country. Thank you Sir Danny for sharing with us this significant information about the history of Sto. Niño.
