Member when history channel was about history like this...

As a Member of the Patriot Guard Riders, I've heard Taps many a time. No two times are alike. The chill that runs down your spine....the hair standing up on the back of your neck as you render the final salute to a Hero...each time is unique. It's truly an honor to say that I've had this privilege, and while it may not be easy...I'm honored to do it. It's the least I can do for someone who's given their all... As Billy Ray Cyrus says, "All Gave Some...Some Gave All."

my grandfather died last november and when the mormerial service started i cried a little until taps started and the 21 gun salute started i cried a lot more the i did before

I was part of Barksdale AF Honor Guard in the mid 1980's for 18 months. I sounded Taps over 150 times. I sounded the with honor to the person who served our Nation. It was not always easy. We sometimes learned a bit about the person who served. There are lyrics to taps as well.

I learn the lyrics as a Girl Scout. We sang it at the end of the day when we were camping: "Day is done, gone the sun From the lakes, from the hills, from the sky All is well, safely rest God is nigh."

Same here, we sang taps at the end of every day in Girl Scout camp (Camp Favorite on Cape Cod, MA). I really liked that tradition and remember those camp days fondly.

(cont.) Of those 8 Missions that I've been on, I heard Taps on 7 of them, if not all 8. On every single Mission i was in uniform (i'm a 1st Lt in the Civil Air Patrol), and not once were my eyes dry. I shed tears not in sorrow for the loss of life....but rather in pride. I was proud of that Soldier for serving. I was proud to be there to honor him or her. Freedom is NOT Free. That Hero paid the price so that we could be free. So to all who serve, and have served....I thank you with all my heart.

Thank you for sharing!! My son was getting ready to do a report about a song that exposed a war history. He has first chosen "one" by metallica, but he's misunderstoon the beginning of the song for some years now. I tried to get him to report on "war-what is it good for?", but then I searched for Taps, I hope he goes with it. He'll go with taps. He has respect. Thank you once again! I can maintain a straight face though a funeral, until they play Taps. At that point, it's game over. I'm done.

My husband passed away and he was buried on November 11, 2011 and they used a CD because there was a parade..I for one was disappointed one would think a soldier passing over rides a parade...oh well.

Very sorry for your loss and that your husband did not have a real Bugler. While serving with the 101st ABN Division in the early 90's I was assigned to burial detail/honor guard that traveled for veterans funerals. It was a highly emotional experience for me. We always had a real Bugler. Over the last several years I've heard that sometimes CD's are used but usually they had some one standing there at least looking like they were playing Taps.

Your post inspired me to buy a bugle. I will learn TAPS. I am a veteran. My dad passed away and got his funeral. I don't ever want one of us to go without taps. I will volunteer at the VFW. I will do my best to make sure we go the right way. God bless you and your Husband.

Unfortunately ma'am the our military doesn't have enough buglers to be at all military burials, which I'm appalled by, because your hubby served our nation with honor and bravery and you're absolutely right he did deserve the actual bugle of taps, not the recorded version!

They say that IF you don't cry at the sound of Taps, there's something wrong with you... I'm a proud member of the Patriot Guard Riders, and have been on 8 Missions with them in the past two years. 1 of them was Memorial Day Ceremonies at DFW National Cemetery in 06, 1 of them was Escorting the Dignity Memorial Moving Wall, 6 of them were funerals...1 of those funerals was my 3rd Cousin, Cpl. Scott McIntosh, US Army. KIA 10 March, 2008 along with 4 others by a suicide bomber...(TBC)

thank you for making my point for me. a shorter horn makes a higher sound and the valves on a trumpet manipulate that sound wile the bugle can only play the basic Bb notes.

I used to be the Regimental Bugler to the London Irish Rifle and the London Regiments and play Last Post. I also played Taps when we toured France and Belgium. Thanks for posting

@tapsbugler thank you, I had no idea that it was a myth, it was such a touching story, I guess thats why I, like alot of others fell into it so easily. The history of the song is interesting, and thanks for setting things straight. My daughter has an amazing history teacher in school who would enjoy this video, he is an avid historian, whose classroom is like a small museum and he does amazing work as a teacher whose passion is history. I am going to pass this info along to him.

Il Silenzio (Silence in English) is an Italian pop music instrumental piece, with a small part of spoken Italian lyrics, notable for its trumpet theme. It was written in 1965 by trumpet player Nini Rosso and Guglielmo Brezza,

Both of you are correct, but llewellyndavies you must also realize both instruments are manipulated by the tongue and embouchure. A Bb trumpet is infact technically a Bb bugle with the addition the valves to be able to play not only in Bb, but also able to play in all twelve harmonic series.

I read a totally different history of this heartwrenching melody than this, which stated that Union Army Captain Robert Elli found his son dead, a Confederate soldier and he had the notes written on a piece of paper on him and he requested a military burial for his son and requested it played at the funeral which was granted and the song was played, and became the funeral song for military men from then on. I am not disputing this history, so please dont feel I am, just stating what I read.

To this day, Army posts use taps as the end of the day calling. For respect, we stand at attention towards the sounding, regardless of whether or not you're in uniform.

I am currently reading the book, Killer Angels for history class, it is about the Civil War, the tells you the origin of "Taps." While writing the review for it, I watched this video to hear more about it. I didn't know the origin of "Taps" and I think the story behind it is interesting.

hmmm... heres where i learned taps came from. Some union dude was in his tent and he heard a wounded confederate outside. he went to see what was up and found it was his son, who had joined the confederate side without his knowledge. how that mixes in with the song, i dont know. but thats what i learned in social studies (im in 5th grade). not saying im right

And I am still broken up about Kennedy's assassination to this day. I was a little kid and it was just unbelievable how that affected the United States. There was a pall over everything for weeks after that. This video just reminded me of that.

I am sorry,but i am a vet and when someone disrepects our fallen heros I get Very UPSET! I have been to many funerals with duel bugles and it is very haunting to me.

a longer trumpet wont make a higher sound i play the trumpet and i know for a fact that a shorter trumpet produces a higher sound not a longer one

It's military it was created by a military man for the military in the military's been using it officially since 1890 civilian underline the word civilian just copy it you ever read the lyrics to taps you will not see one word about any First Responders are civilian police officers it's not about them anymore than Memorial Day armed forces day or veterans day!!!😀😀🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

We now learn the historical significance TAPS. BUT WHO CARES? Today its usually a person faking taps because the US Military now prefers to use a phoney bugle device that is nothing more than a recorded CD designed for someone to masquerade real taps. Instead of getting a music student from a local high school band, or real musician, this new fraudulent misrepresentation of taps is used instead. Do not be fooled! Do not let it happen to you or your loved one. Insist on a real trained musician or band student to perform real live taps which preserves the honor it deserves.

I was trained at the US Navy School of Music and assigned to the Old First Army New York Band NYC as a trumpet player. Our Band played all the parades down 5TH Ave in NYC. We also honored many Vets with playing TAPS who lost their lives in that God awful war in Viet Nam and other wars. To discredit them with phony taps, which often are flawed, is an insult. Please try to see it from our perspective. It was our Military occupation and we took it most seriously from the heart. There are some things that must be real! This is one of them and real TAPS is a age old Military tradition that should not be discredited as depicted in this most significant Historical video. Love and peace to all.
