I was just watching ''The Riffleman'' lol and I was thinking of the days when I had a brand new Johnny West. I still remember the smell of the plastic. Like the rest of my toys GI Joe and my Army men I played with them until I wore them out... Thanks for the memories

Had Johnny West and Geronimo as a kid. The Noble Knights collection too. I got some re-issues of them a few years ago. My original broke apart after 50 years. The plastic joints deteriorate. Thanks for re-visiting this classic.

All the accessories for Johnny came still on the plastic tree, like model kits. Those are in fantastic condition but they aren't new.

I love seeing videos about this line. It was just a few years before my time but that was enough for it to never be on my radar in childhood. Probabky for the best; I'd have been super envious. The only Western figures I could get my hands on were a Lone Ranger, Tonto and How the West Was Won Janes Arness (the later of which was lacking since I didn't really want a grey haired muatachioed action figure). I always wondered why GI Joe or Mego didn't give us a dedicated sub-line of Western characters. The Wild West was still big then, in comincs, TV, movies, and even roleplaying toys (those silvery cap six-guns and red cowboy hat seemed to be everywhere).

Reproduction figure with broken arms. I had several of these figures and accessories. They were poorly put together and not last that long but still had fun playing with them.

How did that arm break off still in the original packaging? Maybe this was stored in an attic with high heat making it brittle. What a shame I have 6 figures played with hard and only one has a broken arm. My grandson twisted it off, but the rest are very solid.

@Gregory Stark -- Correct you are -- it's the THIRD major revision, called the "Mod" color box (aka 'cactus' box), which was issued in, or abt, 1971. Additionally, the VERY first Marx action figure to be released to the public was Sgt. Stony Smith, in 1964 (same year as 12" GI Joe), which was quickly followed up by Daniel Boone, as there was a TV series running at the time. 1965 saw the introduction of Johnny, and Chief Cherokee (actually based on the likeness of Ed Ames, the indigenous sidekick to Fess Parker's Boone character), and the Thunderbolt horse.

In the 90s (at the height of speculated collectable market ) $500. BUT NOW? SADLY these dwell in the forgotten toys category as collectors and nostalgia buyers have aged out .moved on. Or completed their collection. Value is about recognition so these go cheap now

@@bravoalternativemedia4807 There are hundreds of these Marx figures all over Ebay, including many in their original boxes, I bought a few recently. Not to disparage your boxed figure but we're sitting here watching while you manhandle the fragile box open with one hand and do the same with the fragile folded paperwork, both of which are real easy to tear and reduce their value. The arms look like they detached too. Marx produced millions of these things over a decade, he was known as the toy KING and did a phenominal business that enabled him to buy a huge Georgian mansion with 11 bedrooms on 20 acres of property. The figures were well made, and amazingly the poly plastic they used has not chemically deteriorated and become brittle, chalked and started degrading physcially as is typical for plastics, resin and fiberglass. With them being cast solid too and held together with steel springs and rivets, they easily survived play time to last long enough to become collector items all these years later- that's why there's so many around! The non moveable parts Thunderbolt horses etc were made differently- they were cast hollow and thin walled in two halves glued together leaving a very obvious seam line, I get the impression they are likely very brittle from age and that legs can snap right off if one falls on the floor.

  • @gfride1

@@HobbyOrganist Unfortunately, certain plastic colors in the Marx line HAVE been degrading for 20+ years, now, especially the 'caramel' (lt. brown). If it smells like 'crayon' it will be brittle. Agree about the 'man-handling'; that was a ridiculous way to handle those sets & paperwork, although, I doubt he broke the arms; most likely already done.

@@gfride1 Certain colors in general tend to fade, especially reds wich turn brown. I used Minwax red mohogany oil stain on a piece of furniture, after that it had a really rich red color, but after a few years the red turned brown. Blue skies in old instamatic photos goes first- turns white
