It was ghastly. It also didn't help that "The Gilded Age" aired about the same time. Those unmarried women spent too much time alone with unmarried men which would have been ruinous enough in itself. The costumes were also abysmal.

THANK YOU. Yes! The Buccaneers feels more like a modern story, with modern characters that they put in fancy clothes XD At least, Birdgerton kept the rules and etiquette of polite society, and THAT makes the drama and gives the show's world building more depth.

**Title question.** *Actual answer in short ::* Because while people don’t expect and don’t look for a documentary or history lesson details in a work of fiction, they do want some actual universally-known historical bases and references in the background (which are completely lacking in The Buccaneers).

I haven't even seen the Buccaneers, but I could tell from the trailer that it would be exactly as described in this video. A modern teen drama vaguely placed somewhere in the past being vastly inconsistent about the balance of historical accuracy and storytelling. To be honest, Reign started out that way, too. The first season felt like Gossip Girl without the phones. And they made the conscious decision NOT to have the costumes be historically accurate, so they would have more flexibility in using costumes as a character development tool. (Plus men's fashion in that time was decidedly unsexy. Codpieces, anyone?) But then the writers kind of got stuck with having to deal with what happened in history to the real Mary Queen of Scots, so it went through a massive shift, getting super dark like Game of Thrones. So I do think it was better than The Buccaneers, but it still had some serious issues with inconsistency. Bridgerton, on the other hand, is successful because it consciously breaks from historical accuracy in a consistent way. It's setting isn't jostled around based on whatever mood the writers were in that day. My biggest complaint is the costumes of the first season. Behind-the-scenes stuff reveal that the costumes were a HUGE undertaking for the show because everyone was custom-fit. So why do none of the younger ladies' gowns fit? The empire waist hem is supposed to be below the bust to accent a woman's breasts, but for some reason the costumes have the hem going across the breasts, making them look smaller and making the young women look shapeless, when they are supposedly trying to make themselves look as appealing as possible to attract a husband. (Look at Daphne at 1:50 and 2:20. It also happens to Penelope a lot.) Meanwhile, the older ladies, Lady Bridgerton and Lady Danbury, look stunning in gowns that actually fit. Maybe that was deliberate, to show how these younger ladies are still trying to find how they "fit" into society (pun intended), but I think it was inconsistent with the younger ladies' goals for them to be wearing unflattering clothes. Fortunately, the second season fixed it. The now Duchess and mother Daphne is wearing gowns that fit, but so are the single ladies, Eloise, Kate, and Edwina. Only Penelope has costume issues in the sense that her clothes aren't very flattering, but at least they fit. Since she's still supposed to be in her awkward, not-fitting-in stage, that works. Photos released from season 3 show that her wardrobe is totally redone to be flattering because she'll be the leading lady of that season. I just think it's sad that Daphne's clothes looked wrong in HER season. But even my issue with Bridgerton works better than these other shows because there does seem to be an in-universe explanation, even if I don't think it's a very good one. Unlike the Buccaneers or Netflix's Persuasion, that seem to think that throwing a bunch of historical elements at the screen with some beautiful actors is enough to make a good period drama. Interestingly, though, if you've actually read any of Jane Austen's novels, you know that she avoids giving years or titles in her stories (Pride and Prejudice refers to Darcy's uncle as the "Earl of ---" and the year as "18---.") She probably did that so that it could be placed in any setting, but she didn't know that things like an inheritance being entailed away to a distant male cousin would become a thing of the past. Or that today's society really wouldn't care that Lydia ran away with Wickham. I mean, it would provide gossip, but it wouldn't completely destroy the whole family's reputation. But injustice, double standards, family expectations, selfish family members, etc. ARE timeless concepts, which is why her books still feel real and applicable today.

Thank you! I actually prefer the Buccaneers. It is Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel. Which allows for a very grounded version of the Gilded Age, that allows modern writers room to play. The whole point of the book and adaptation, is they start as very young idealized girls, and grow into women in the process. I feel like whoever wrote this didn’t watch the entire season.

It was incredibly cringey and although again I'm sure they were going for historical fantasy, a lot of the liberties they took just don't immerse you as well as Bridgerton does. It actually got better in season 2 and peaked (in a way) in series three. This is minor spoiler, but it´s discovered in the the very first episode of the second series, so here it goes: Sydney Parker dies between series two and three and that paves the way for a new romance with a new male figure. It also gives us a subtle hint (which is later confirmed) that one of the main charecters is gay, but it is not overdone like we see it in todays series@@luisecawthorne1025

haven't watched either series, but yes a historical anachronism can make or break a period drama. Bridgerton plays on the rumours that Queen Charlotte may have been bi-racial or mixed-race. While the real life Queen did still "pass for white", there was no evidence to prove or disprove her heritage, Bridgerton went in the opposite direction and explored a "what if she was 100% black" scenario. In this case, the anachronism isn't the idea that Queen Charlotte and her family were black, it's the idea of a fully integrated high-class British society (which was notoriously racist back in those years). The Buccaneers seem to be taking the Baz Luhrman "Romeo & Juliette" route (the film is set in modern times, but the dialog is lifted straight from Shakespeare's play). But in this case it's the other way around.

"solid period design" and world building/setting seems to be the key. Which makes sense, since that's basically the foundation, firmly placing the story--and the audience--in a specific time and place. Then, individual inaccuracies can branch from there, and work in context with the more accurate setting and design.

That’s what I hate in so many period dramas nowadays. When watching a period drama I don’t want to just see hot people of today in period costumes talking in a posh accent. I want be able to peak through that era with what I’m watching. I want to see a classic take with stories, people and social constructs as they would be in that period. I can understand bending the rules if it’s a fictional world inspired by the real one and it’s set in a different period, there are no constraints there if it’s established that it’s a fictional world, but when it’s the real one I care about accuracy on every aspect. Historical realism is important.

I knew we are getting another Persuasion like disaster, when I saw Conchita as a bride to be standing in her underwear in the open window for everyone to see, while Nan was climbing down the wall. As a period drama lover I want more of the stories from BBC or ITV production from the past 30y or so and less dumbing down and modernised stories apparently for 21st c viewer. Bridgertons work, as was said, because despite the unrealistic features, the world is more or less reflection of reality and has rigid rules. It's not that people back then couldn't have fun, but the Bucaneer girls found themselves in constant state of undress in front of men, with whom they repeatedly were alone and unchaperoned and weren't even trying to hide it. It just makes a joke of the whole story.

you know why, cause the buccaneers made it all about nan and her constant crying and whining, at least the 90s version it was about all the girls and not just nan. Besides bridgerton does have success but thanks to all the major love tropes it stole from books from the past. when I watch it I see every love trope from books I have read, like austen. or the taming of the shrew. so bravo author of bridgerton, nothing but a copy of great love stories that you took and gave a little spin, the only good thing about it that is seemingly original is Penelope.

That they're both steaming piles of garbage. This seems to be an apology for Bridgerton trying to demarcate thing slices of difference, but it's not really that different. About the only positive I see is what they did with the soundtrack. I think that was an inspired choice. The integrated setting is baffling to me. I tried to watch it. But basically there was some kind of lip service that slavery existed until the queen married the king. Which doesn't explain how slavery ended or how people who used to be slaves ended up in the aristocracy so suddenly. Though at least it explains the large quantity of them pictured in the show. And if there wasn't slavery, why is there such a large quantity of black people there? The Asian people are just as baffling, as to why they are where they are. The Indians not so much as if you have a British aristocrat who married an Indian lady, that works out, and that did happen. And then you just have to imagine they came home to a UK that was a kinder world than it really was. But the rest of Asia was mostly out of Europe's grasp at that point. Anyway, I found the dissonance in the background of Bridgerton to be extremely distracting since your family history impacts your value on the marriage market along with your family money. Though there's a lot of stuff outside of race that's also really wrong. Like the fashion. And people basically not reacting correctly to extremely rude and uncouth behavior.

Bridgerton (the tv show) feels like terrible fan fiction written by ill-educated Americans with zero real understanding of the historical period after watching a couple of Jane Austen adaptations. May be the books are better. I don't know if something was lost in translation while adapting for the screen. I was put off from reading them because of how idiotic I found the TV series. In this age of idiocracy, where self-serving con-artists and megalomaniacs are elected to the government by ignorant voters based on memes they saw on social media, people don't care about, or worse, knowingly contribute to the gradual destruction of the environment, and garbage like Twilight is a best seller, success of other garbage like Netflix's Bridgerton is not surprising.
