What kind of romance?? lgbtq+ is my favorite kind.
I've just read the book thief and I loved it as much as you did!! Also, would really recommend Train to Pakistan by Khushwant Singh..It's a historical fiction set during the partition of India .....It's an amazing and emotional story, surely check it out
Thank you Hailey! I’m in a reading slump right now and historical fiction for some reason gets me out of a slump!
Thanks for this, Hailey! The semester has ended a week ago so I have a plenty of time to read more books. 💗
One of my favorite historical fiction books is Moloka'i by Alan Brennert. It follows a Hawaiian girl who is diagnosed with leprosy and is sent off to quarantine in the Kalaupapa settlement on Moloka'i. Timeline wise, it starts in the late 1800s when Hawaii was still its own kingdom.

Hi Glitz Queen, we read Moloka'i in my book group and everyone loved it, even the person who usually hates the book. This was a few years ago, and I still remember it. The writing is beautiful.

If you like that, read Second Life of Mireille West by Amanda Skenandore. Similar story (I also loved her Between Earth and Sky)

Yes!! One of my favorites as well and I feel I haven’t seen many people talk about it.
Walk on earth a stranger is a YA about the gold rush with a magical twist. LOVE IT. Also The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah is set during the dust bowl and was absolutely incredible. My favorite read last year.
Hailey I read Lovely War last year because of you and it is one of my all time favorites, thank you💕
Thank you so much for the Ruta Sepetys recommendation. You are the reason I have found one of my new favorite authors. Love Ruta’s books!!
I just couldn't resist suggesting you this historical fiction novel as I was watching your video: (The Thief, the Harlot, and the Healer) My favorite genre is historical fiction.
Love the daily uploads! It's a children's book, but Lilly's crossing is a great world war 2 fiction for anyone who has not read it.
Hailey, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for, thank you so much!!!
I remember in one of your videos you talked about Lovely War- by Julie Berry. I bought it straight away! It was sooo good, I was sobbing the whole night through reading it...lol🥰
came back here to say that i watched this video early this year after reading babel and craving some historical fiction reads, and girl, let me just THANK YOU for recommending the diviners. spent the whole summer reading all 4 books of the diviners series and LOVED all of them it's now one of my most favorite book series. the diviners is so well written and i found them out thanks to u !!!
I’m fascinated by the story of Lade Jane Grey so will definitely give that book a read!! Also just bought Last Night at the Telegraph Club so it’s great to hear such an amazing review - love this video!!!
I can't believe I still haven't read the fountains of silence yet when her newest book is already released, I need to finally get to it this year !!
I read and enjoyed Next Year in Havana by Chanel Cleeton last year. It’s a fascinating look at Cuban history and identity. I’ll definitely be reading more from this author in 2022.
The Henna Artist is an adult historical fiction set in India and The Stationery Shop is an adult historical fiction set in Iran. Khalid Housseni also has a few adult historical fiction books set in the Middle East.

The Night Diary and Ahimsa are also set in India, but these 2 are middle grade
Thank you for all the amazing reccomendations! Can't wait to dive into one of these when I crave a historical book.❤ I would reccomend The Silence Of Bones by June Hur and Korean Historical Mystery book.
Thank you for this video! I don’t read historical fiction (very often at least) but I have a friend who loves to and this will be a great reference
I have more: Not YA: -The most beautiful woman in florence by alyssa Palombo (set in italian renaissance, aka 15th century) -The bear and the nightingale by Katherine Arden (set in 14th century russia) -The night circus by erin morgenstern (set in 1870s Europe, different places in Europe) -mexican gothic by Silvia Moreno García (set in the 50s in México) -The Paris hours by alex George (set in 1920s París) -The strange and Beautiful sorrows of ava lavender by Leslye Walton (set in France and USA over many decades in the 20th century) -The Shadow Of The wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón (set in spain during the 50s and 60s) -The dutch house by Ann Patchett (set during the 60s un the US) YA: -Cartier's hope by MJ rose (set in 1880s new york) -Enchantee by Gita Trelease (set in 18th century france) -The other Bennet sister by janice hadlow (set in early 1800s england) -Ophelia by Lisa M. Klein (set in 16th century denmark)
Love your book reviews even tho I do not read YA! But am getting good recommendations to try .
One that I recently added to my tbr that I think you might like is So Many Beginnings by Bethany C Morrow. It is a Little Women retelling set during the American Civil War!
I am not really a fan of historical fiction but I read Lovely War last year because of you and absolutely fell in love with this book! I remember sobbing over this book at 2am it was so good!!! Even my mom got concerned I was crying so much lol
I’m not sure if you’ve mentioned this series before, but I really loved the “And I Darken” series by Kiersten White. It follows the story of Vlad the Impaler, but the “Vlad” character is a female named Lada. She is fierce and the character development of Lada and her brother is fantastic. Its been months since I finished the series and I still have dreams about it.
One, you’re why I picked up Lovely War last year (and LOVED it). Two, you should definitely pick up Ken Follett’s Kingsbridge trilogy (book 1 is called Pillars of the Earth).
The lovely was on audio is incredible! If you haven’t read it that way I recommend a re-read that way
Not YA....but hailey you've got to read pachinko. Its soo good. And the show is coming out in March(I guess).
14:54... Oh my God, this is my cousin's favourite book/series. She has been literally dying telling me to read it lol. It's one of the next few books I'm planning to pick up.. super stoked
I've just read Human Acts by Han Kang recently and it blew me away... it sets in 1980 "Gwangju Uprising", South Korea. It was so devastatingly beautiful!
An Elephant in the Garden by Michael Morpurgo is set in WW2 but it is soo good- its younger but super good.
Hey, I would recommend Dragon Springs Road by Janie Chang, it’s set in late 19th-early 20th century China and follows the life of a Eurasian girl. There is also She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan but that has a lot of fantastical elements to it as well if I remember rightly.
You should definitely read The Ibis trilogy (about Opium war between China and British India) and The Glass Palace (about the effects of world war 2 in Burma, India and Malaysia), both are written by Amitav Ghosh. Hope you read them! ❤
How We Disappeared by Jing-Jing Lee is a ww2 fiction book set in Singapore during the Japanese Occupation. it has a dual timeline and follows the main character who is forced to be a comfort woman to the Japanese soldiers during ww2 and in the present time it follows a young boy who just found out a family secret. it’s a really good read! it’s also very rare that i find a historical fiction book set in Singapore :)
Omg you need to read Out of the Easy by Ruta Sepetys, I loved the characters in that one so much. I read it years ago now but still remember them. Also another YA historical fiction author you should check out is June Hur, she writes historical fiction semi-mystery and they are mostly (if not all) set in Korea.
Middle grade rec: Year of Impossible Goodbyes. About Koreans under Japanese rule (though it is during WWII). My all-time fav. historical fiction: A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. I've never cried so much while reading a book.
Ellen Marie Wiseman is such an underrated historical fiction author! Her newest book The Orphan Collector is set during the 1918 Spanish flu outbreak and is phenomenal. She also has one set in a coal mining town in 1912, and another about a girl who falls in love with an Italian boy in the 30s and ends up in a sanatorium. I highly recommend all her books!
Have you looked into These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong, or The Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell? Neither one of these are technically historical fiction, but they are set during the 1920s so if you want more in that era it might be worth looking into them. They all also have a wide cast of characters as well as writing styles that I feel like falls in the same ball-park as one another. To be honest, when I read These Violent Delights and The Last Magician, I thought that these three could easily be on the same recommendation list because they reminded me of one another.
I just received i must betray you also so excited to read it !! 😍🥰 thanks for sharing i am new to booktube and i love historical fiction ❤️. ( and your channel!)
I love Ruta Sepetys! I read all 4 of them - Fountains of Silence, Sea to the Salt, I must Betray You and Between Shades of Gray.
I read Luck of the Titanic recently. I loved seeing the Titanic from a different perspective. The ending surprised me
10 thumbs up! Loved this video and so glad you included the Stalking Jack the Ripper series
One of my favorite historical fiction books is Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix. It’s based on the triangle shirtwaist factory fire in the early 1900s.
Lookinv forward to your next Bookshelf Tour
My favorite is Fifty Words for Rain by Asha Lemmie, it's post WWII and follows a Japanese girl who is half-black, being raised by her older imperial grandparents. It deals very heavily with racism and other hard topics like sexual assault and death of a loved one, but it's SO good! It was my favorite book of last year. Highly recommend!
THE VUDEO I was waiting for . Thank you very much 💜💜💜
highly recommend Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno-Garcia! It mostly takes place in Mexico in the 1920s and is influenced by Mayan mythology and is a great all round standalone!
I read Lovely War after your recommendation and I loved it SO MUCH. 😭😭😭
I loved Take What You Can Carry by Gian Sardar, which takes place in 1979 Kurdistan. I also loved The Mad Women's Ball which takes place in a psychiatric hospital in Paris in the late 1800s.
The Golem and The Jinni by Helene Wecker is hands down my favorite historical fantasy series of all time. The two main characters are basically immortal beings and it takes you through so much history almost without realizing it at first because you're so invested in their lives and the lives of their neighbors and friends. I cannot wait for the third book to come out, Hidden Palace was such a good sequel it might even eclipse my love of the first one which is impressive since the first book quickly became my favorite book I've ever read. I'm trying to chase the high I got from those two books by looking into more historical fiction as it's not a genre I've read much of before aside from like Jane Austen novels I guess.
Hailey! have you read Ashes of Roses by Mary Jane Auch? It's YA Historical Fiction. About an Irish immigrant girl who arrives on Ellis Island and the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911.
I just finished The Stationary Shop ❤ Have you read it? It was a short fast read and oh my heart 🙌💔
Thank you! I enjoy historical fiction, but it's always set in WW2. While I have enjoyed them, but I love reading about different settings.
I LOVE historical fiction so as soon as I saw your thumbnail Hailey I had to click on it! I can't wait to watch - thank you🥰❤
RAWRRR I’ve been waiting for this so long! I need these recommendations a lot! I’ve read and loved most of these, but I need to check out Stacey Lee
I love The Kitchen Boy by Robert Alexander! It's about the Last Czar and his family's final days, with a twist.
My TBR just got a million books longer lol! I LOVE Historical Fiction! Great video!
I really like your new style of thumbnail for the video!
I don’t think this is a YA book but The Girl Behind the Wall by Mandy Robotham is a historical fiction set during the time of the Berlin Wall. It’s about two sisters who are split because of the Wall and the one on the Soviet controlled side is trying to get back to her sister. Also Mandy Robotham writes a lot of historical fiction based books.
I really want to read something set in Pompeii where the main character is not killed in the eruption and has actually left the city by the time it happens, dies years after, and goes back to haunt her families villa
Highly recommend The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. I think it’s best to go into this historical fiction blind, but I will tell you that it takes place in 1940s Barcelona and it’s like a love letter to anyone who has had a book change their life.
Mine is The Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M. Auel. Set in the time when the Cro-Magnon humans and Neanderthals both walked the earth. A Cro-Magnon girl loses her family and tribe in an earthquake and is taken in by a Neanderthal tribe and raised by them.

@@encyclopediaofelizabeth I really need to do a reread, it’s been like ten years since I read it, I remember so little. 😢
Just watched your video about you opening up about what had happened last year and your new years resolution. My advice only is that, don't try be happy, don't try to look for happiness or don't even try to manifest happiness, 'cause there's no such thing as permanent happiness but I do want you to have is comfort. Please treat your days comfortably, don't pursuit happiness because when your comfortable then you can relax, then feel peace and maybe that would become your happiness. Just have comfortable days. You're doing great by the way. Keep it up and keep safe.
My favorite historical fiction which aren’t euro centric and have WW2 connection- the glass palace by Amitav Ghosh and Pachinko. Both are stunning both in prose and the plot. Pleeeeeeeeeeease read them!
If you’re into middle grade I would highly recommend anything by Alan Gratz-specifically Prisoner B-3087! ❤️
Hey girl long time no see sorry haven't really been able to watch your vids cause my kids keep me busy im glad ur still doing okay 😊 enjoyed the vid too awesome job be safe Hailey
Love this! Last Night at the Telegraph Club is a must read
There’s a book called the boy in the red dress. It’s historical fiction. I picked it up on a whim and I loved it.
I'm going to start and finish the Stalking Jack the Ripper series this year which I'm so looking forward to 🥰🥰🥰🥰
I love historical fiction! Love your videos!!! Do you know any other utubers who read historical fiction?
Do you know of Leon Uris? I've been going through all of his books recently.
you should read the blossom and the firefy by Sherri L. Smith. it tells a story about a kamikaze pilot and a girl that works for the army. It's set in Japan, 1945 and it is really interesting to see a war story outside of Europe
Hi Hailey, I've enjoyed your video. But if you are interested in other historical fiction that is not set in the West, there is Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See which is set in China during the 19th century.
I would defenitely recommend Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi! Furthermore I have to admit I have mostly read WOII historical fiction 🙈
Have you read between shades of grey by ruta sepetys?
The great partition by yasmin khan , Midnight Children , Train to Pakistan by khushwant singh(All based on indian history)
Great reccomendations! ❤️
Yes I’m a 90s baby too can’t believe how time flys by
My recommendation is Take My Hand by Dolen Perkins-Valdez. It is not YA however
Chanel Cleeton! I love her books mainly set during the Cuban Revolution
Thank you for recommending the Japanese books my grandmother was Japanese but she didn't come to the states til the late 50s my grandfather was American in the Army when he met her.
I'm currently reading Z: A novel of Zelda Fitzgerald. It's a fascinating and well researched historical novel set mostly in the 1920s.
I love June Hur's books, she has three YA historical mysteries all set in Korea (they're all standalones). Also, The City Beautiful by Aden Polydoros was a favorite of mine from last year, it's a YA historical mystery with fantasy elements, set in Chicago during the 1890s with a gay Jewish MC. And if you liked The Last Night at the Telegraph Club I'd recommend Passing Strange by Ellen Klages, which is a historical fantasy novella also set in queer San Francisco. I coincidentally read both books close together, and it was interesting to see the different ways the authors approached the similar subject matter.
My daughter loved Stalking Jack The Ripper I have the full series. It's one of my favs
I’m not sure if it’s YA, I think it is, but one that’s caught my attention lately that I’m hoping to pick up soon is called African Town by Irene Latham and Charles Waters. It follows several different perspectives about the last Africans being brought illegally to America in 1860. Plus it’s in verse! I thought it would be a good, compelling read.
If you enjoy books set during the American Civil War, Lynn Austin writes really amazing stories about that time period! I really like a Candle in the darkness and All things new! I also love her novel Hidden places and a proper pursuit (although that's set in a different time period).

Also, the voice in the wind series by Francine Rivers is set just after Biblical times (so it is Christian historical fiction). So it was veryyy different from anything else I have ever read.
Try Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See. Enthralling story about 2 girls growing up in 19th century China. They are from different classes and have very different lives, but develop a beautiful lifelong friendship. Explores life in China at that time (including gut wrenching descriptions of foot binding), the roles of women, the class system, and true friendship. On my Top 5 all-time favorite books list.
I hate history class but adore history itself so I LOVE reading about conflicts and wars through fiction (or true stories just not history books). I find that it’s all so repetitive though and there is so much WWII centered around Nazi Germany and not a lot of other things represented. I want to learn more about Latin American independence, Vietnam war, Korean War, Gulf War, the Middle East, etc. but it’s so hard to find highly ranked and well read historical fiction on any of these. Also like you mentioned in the beginning, I’ve read a lot of books on race and POC, but very few historical fiction and probably zero outside of civil war/civil rights era and that’s just in America. Thanks for the video!
Side note: ANYTHING By Alison Weir is AMAZING!! Try "Innocent tratior" if you haven't already!
Highly recommend checking out this Japanese historical fiction classic: The Makiota Sisters
My Lady Jane is a really good book I need to look at the Mary series
Read the Victoria Speedwell series by Deanna Raybourne. I feel like if you like Stalking Jack the Ripper I feel like you would like that too.
I wanna read Fountains Of Silence and Fall Of Giants. If you want another recommendation, try Bone Talk by Candy Gourlay. 👌
I NEED MORE VICTORIAN ERA BOOKS PLEASE!!!!
Love to see Libba Bray mentioned!
Thank you - I appreciate you - never stop
A YA sort of historical fiction book that I really liked set in 1920s is the Last Magician by Lisa Maxwell!
My favorite historical fiction series is Outlander 😊
I have a couple of historical fiction books that i really enjoyed (they might be aimed for a younger audience, but i still like them). 'Behind Rebel Lines' is the first one and it's about a woman that pretended to be a man so she could join the army and help in the civil war. She became a spy and ended up finding out valuable information. The second book that i recommend is 'Indian Captive' which is about a girl's family that got captured by indians (native Americans) and her family was killed. The indians took the girl back to their home and she had to badically become an indian. When she is faced with the option to go back with the white men, she has to choose between the indians and the white men. Im not gonna say which one she chooses because I don’t want to spoil it. Both are great books. Another book I plan on reading is called 'The Guns of August' which is about WWI.
Omg i really need arthurian legend recommendations please?????
Lovely war and the stationery shop are my favorite historical fiction books
