Historic Nickel Plate Road locomotive no. 624 moved from Hammond, Indiana
Фильм және анимация
Following an agreement made with the City of Hammond in late 2016, historic Nickel Plate Road steam locomotive no. 624 was successfully relocated from Hammond, Indiana. Plans call for it the FWRHS to administer its restoration at a private facility in northeast Indiana where it will eventually be on display at the planned Headwaters Junction attraction - and maybe even restored to operation. Thanks to WPTA 21 for the coverage!

Funny coincidence, I was in Cleveland before the Cubs world series and stopped at Mad River. I was only visitor that early and told the lady of 624 just wasting away in Hammond. I'm from South Chicago area and often went to Hammond. It pained me to see it being destroyed. Well the kind lady called someone and in November it was reported that 624 would be moved to Fort Wayne. What is very interesting is that I lived next to the Stony Island yard, and my father renovated the boarding house which was the Warren, and the C & O resturant.
Out of the blue a 90s childhood memory about this locomotive came to mind. Checking Google maps, I was shocked to see an empty lot where the locomotive, a few cars, and signal tower used be. Glad to learn someone saved it!
My late grandfather's favorite past times are TRAINS, TRAINS, TRAINS. He is from Hammond Indiana. I can see why now. I would love to learn more about the train history during the depression from this area (to remember my grandfather).
I hope the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society will restore #624 to operating condition for their headwaters junction project because if that happens the #765 will have a new running mate.
Sorry to see it was moved. I’m from Hammond and remember as a kid playing inside of it. We snuck over the fence.

If this ends up operating again, a double-header with 765 should be in order!

When I was a kid my grandfather had a bar in Hessville close to the Nickel Plate Railroad Tracks. I would watch the trains go by and my dog would chase them. I could hear stuff falling through the tree leaves when they went by. Who knows maybe that train you have was one I saw when I was a kid! Like I said my dog chased those trains and one finally got him, Some kids found him on the tracks run over, he was my good buddy DUKE!
Good luck guys!
Best thing that could ever happen: 765 587 624 tripleheader
Once 587 gets restored and 624, they should hold a triple header with 765,587, and 624 on NS lines.
That’s nice to know!
I hope they get it restored and maybe to running condition. Will be cool to see a sister of 765 running with her.

Jacob broehl how is 624 a sister engine of 765? The 624 is a Mikado and 765 is a Berkshire

@@CENsystem an engine doesn't have to have the same wheel arrangement to be a sister, their both Nickle Plate Road engines so that can count as a sister
Hopefully it will do a double header with 765 NKP ENGINES UNITE!!!!!
Wow I wish the Lima 624 meets Baldwin 587 when restoration is done.

About 1:40 I really don't think that they are sisters in anyway because of their different classes and wheel arrangements. I could say that both the engines are cousins since they're both built by Lima, (In family term).

They are sisters in the way they are super power limas, 765 is just 624 with a larger firebox and a extra wheelset to hold the weight
Question for FWRHS - Why did you deliver the 624 locomotive to Wabash vs your maintenance facility east of Fort Wayne? I would think moving the locomotive twice would be an extra cost.

as we drove past this, in the '50's & '60's, my father bemoaned, often, that it was painted again, again by brats--this is the Berkshire behind Hammond High?
We need to get more coal-burning mainline steam in the United States, operating with original running gear. Strasburg could be a big part of that.
Why is this locomotive called a 6-2-4? It looks more like a 2-6-4 to me, unless the indistinctness of the pictures is deceiving my eyes.

Road number 624. It is actually a 2-8-2 Mikado, or Mike. The slightly smaller sibling of the Berkshire, this class was popular with many railroads for its ability to move tonnage at speed. But the 2-8-4 Berkshires have a slightly larger firebox made possible by the additional trailing axle to bear the tonnage, allowing them the steaming capacity to pull heavier trains than the Mikados.
