Reflectivity is a problem for many e-ink readers alike. Since the industry moved to back-lit ones, the paper effect is lost. R.I.P. beautiful paper-like e-ink.

Is it, though? I've taken a Kobo Mini outside in direct sunlight, and yeah, while it would reflect if the sunlight was directly reflected into my eyes from the screen (which, to be fair, doesn't seem that bad), and the Kobo Mini was an older model that wasn't even HD. Wouldn't the newer models be high definition with E-ink carta (which, to my limited knowledge, is top class and the industry standard at this point) along with 300 ppi? Or does reflectivity depend more on the quality of the e-paper?

There's this thing called "matte screen protector". I've been using it on all my devices. I absolutely hate glossy screens.

A screen protector is not a solution, but a workaround. And yes, it might depend on the high quality of the newest e-ink screens. But the light emission they have now implies the use of a homogeneous, transparent medium, i.e. glass. They can call it carta or pietra, no big deal. The fact remains. Older models without backlightning were way better in full day visibility. Now you need that light always on, defying the big advantage that e-ink panels should have in battery endurance. If you tell me, this is a shame.

Isn't backlligt an option? you can obviously turn it off if you are in direct sunlight and enjoy :-)

This is phenomenal. If you told me even 5 years ago we'd have colour e-ink AND refresh rates fast enough to view video now, I would have laughed. Great stuff.

Does the A5 Color or A7 Color have the feature to adjust the backlight color temperature like in the A9? or, Which are the Hisense E-ink smartphone with this feature?

A reflective screen for an e ink screen. This is the worst idea. İf I will need screen light again why should I buy this? İ prefer amoled wich has more colourful and more vivid screen. Or I prefer a non colourful and non reflective phone

just buy an amoled phone mate, this phone is meant to fill a niche and is not for everyone

pretty crazy, I've always wanted a phone-sized e-ink device. I don't even want it to be a full fledged phone either, if it's just a reader I'd still be okay, honestly.

I can't wait to see what the remarkable team does with these new colour e ink panels, and if they'll add a speed mode for even lower writing latency

Omg! This is the best e-ink ever made :0 never thought it would be so "fast" to the point to watch decently a youtube video... Never thought...

If you wanted detoxify your addiction to smartphone. This is it. Offer everything you ever need. And reduce that distraction and attraction to screen.

I have a quastion: When set the display mode to "classic e-ink screen mode", does the display quality look like black and white devices (like A5 Pro)? or is there a structural difference in the display that makes the image quality different? For example, the depth of white is different from black and white displays.

How's the battery life?

Why not use a mat screen :'( I will just wait for that before buying one :/. Nice video ! I think it will be great to have a battery test (in video mode, normal mode and maybe one in call mode ? ). Thanks !

Why is so quick? kindels and black ink ereaders are a lot slower, that scroll is incredible.

if i should treat it as a smartphone first you should also review it as a smartphone first. what are the full specifications (cpu, gpu, ram, storage, speed, WiFi version, Bluetooth version 4g capability etc), android version, battery life, apps available (if gplay is not installed), price, value, comparison with other similar devices within the same price range... you know, the usual stuff we like to know about smartphones.

Question - What is the refreshing rate of the screen and does the ink settles and refreshing rate stops ifyyou don't touch the screen? I'd be very grateful if you or someone can answer Thanks a lot!

What about an E-ink smartwatch to compliment this phone? Suggestions? I m seriously considering getting this phone, if not for the mobility. The specs are serious !

What about battery test? Battery and internet browsing would be most interesting for me, but I will wait rather for good e-reader.

I use Nokia's feature phone as my primary phone. For out of the city trips I'd like to use sometimes Uber, Whatsapp etc to stay connected. I don't want to risk using Nokia after returning to my home city. I looked at the palm phone, a few e-ink phones, and some smart watches so far.. Hisense attracts me the most so far.

Not one comment on the most important factor. How long does the battery last?

i have the A5 pro; i use it as a travel phone. the challenge i have is the screen is not extremely responsive. when texting, it often skips a letter or two here and there. also, there is a ton of Chinese bloatware. my favorite eink phone was the yotaphone2. i have yet to find an eink that is as good. and then there is a kind of realization that either you have a Samsung or an iPhone -- anything else -- and you are going to wish you had a higher-end samsung or iPhone as your main phone.

Best Android Ereader, i will wait for A7C 2021 i hope will be better in battery and sound, Also RTL language support and more development on quality of the device

Good review ...you should explain in details about the eink technology what type of RGB panel used and the coming eink products should focus on making 42inch TVs, monitors with seriously good quality eink and panels so that it truly eliminates eye strain which will literally serve its purpose... keep going ahead

Does this do esims & wifi calling?

From my experience with it,, so far, you don't have to have a screen light on, if there's a decent light source (sun or lamp). To avoid glare from the glossy screen, you just have to fiddle with the angle you're holding it a bi (~15 degrees seems to work). It's not that big a deal. There are fewer reading angles than a matt device (like Kingrow's) but maybe that's because Hisense chose to go with Gorilla Glass to better protect against screen cracking? Other concerns like No Google Play and confirming your provider's 4G bandwitdch is supported are more important to focus on.

common misconception, gorilla glass doesn't help with cracking, it helps with scratch, a phone without gorilla glass is more resistant to cracks. Glass isn't flexible.

@@yuvilio of course it matters. Turns a glossy surface into a matte surface, drastically reducing glare. I've been using matte protectors for 12 years now on all my devices, exactly for this function. I hate glossy screens.

@@DanSlotea Thanks for the recommendation. I peeled off the glossy blue light filter screen protector (barely use the LED backlight as it is) and installd a matte one (​Brotect Airglass Matte) instead. Nicer feel, better friction for dragging/writing, and much less glare.

Does it support Google Play Store?

I took the screen protector off my HiSense A5 Pro CC and the phone in fact became less reflective, so...

Hi, does anyone know its SAR?

I want an eink smartphone for daily life, in order to care my eyes! For the reflection on the display, I have tested my current smartphone with screen off and also has a lot of reflections. When the display is on, the LCD light also hides them. I think that shouldn't be a problem in Hisense A5 Pro CC, as far as you place it in a lighted place but against the light source. Unfortunately, I have read that the LED illumination of this phone doesn't have warm tones, which is very important for your eyes safety if you read a lot at night. That's the only disadvantage I see.

Seriously, how do you review an e-ink phone and not mention the battery life? Why else would anyone even consider getting an e-ink smartphone, if not to save battery as much as possible? Dropped the ball with this one.

Most on it is in chinese, no matter your choosen english. (Same on dasung "not ereader" - both high price tag) This is an impudence, not to translate the whole device before selling it - or at least vie ota update...

after watching this I decided my next phone will be a eink, seem eink technology is to a point that really worth to be use at a smartphone.

Firstly, thanks for the video it is very interesting seeing how far this has come. However, I have to wonder why? Why have they used this technology on a phone? It is the wrong technology for the job. I can see its usefulness as an e-reader where there is no need for rapid screen content changing but its not the right tool for the job here. The colours are very, very washed out but at least its colour I guess - baby steps and one day we will end up with something that replicates the vibrancy of a magazine (or an LCD/Oled display) without the battery draw.

Because technologic evolution and energy consumption are main reasons. And health add is the first thing - just compare health impacts of LCD/LED versus E-ink :)

i really really really wish, that apple will make an iPhone mini, to a "minimalistic iPhone" with an e ink display and a batterie life of 2 weeks or more. don't need youtube or any other entertainment. just apps which helps you out with information, organization and when really needed youtube for information in black and white 1fps video. please. maybe just an kickstarter project with an "send in iPhone and get back with e ink display" would be huge! for me at least and maybe many other people who believe in digital detox or just want longer batterie life.

Why should we want an e ink smartphone compared to the AMOLED screen one? I dont get it

I always read your articles to keep updated on the latest and greatest technology that's coming out, but I don't understand why anybody thought it was a good idea to make an e-ink display that you can't read in broad daylight. That was literally the whole appeal of the Kindle Paperwhite over the Kindle Fire and many other e-ink display devices. Do you recommend any of the e-ink display phones other than three light phone or is the light phone the best for a distraction-free interface with a great display?

And it's like, we didn't build it LOL Yeah, I'm not sure why you would use a shiny glass screen, and then put a screen protector over it, all with having an inherently dark display tech.. doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Not everyone understands as much as you. When they sent us to review sample they did not send us a matte screen protector along with it and we need to do the review we are more than happy to purchase a matte screen protector in the future and make a video especially just for you at a later date.

@@goodereader Life Pro tip: take any antiglare, take paper scissors, cut this complicated shape. Put on top of original one just for presentation (so sample will be untouch if you have to return it) - profit. Normal thing in 20 century, magic in 21 ct. :].
